When I was growing up on Long Island (NY), we all called it "The Island", which was a suburb of NYC ("The City"). Now I live in "The Metro West" of Boston, but also have a vacation home on "The Cape".

All of which is to say that I typically use "Baja" and not "the Baja". Go figure!

Baja is a state name. When you cross going north are you suddenly in The California or The Arizona?

And how does one appear Canadian from an ad online?

It appears a number of people here don't even know what a definite article is . The one I refer to is the word "The"
