San Felipe
A really easy crossing in Mexicali East. Good road conditions. It's been a little cool down here and even some fog yesterday.

Drove down South today to the shell beach I've seen mentioned in David K's reports. The road is still pretty bad.

"Our Beach", now that is funny! Too bad there is so little sharing. Baja is for sharing! I began camping there in 1978, named it Shell Island, and
have enjoyed it with family and friends since. The gringos who began living in the region after a paved road arrived have called it Shell Beach. There
already is a Shell Beach in Baja and this one is a barrier island, plus Shell Island is a little more exotic sounding, right? A commercial fishing
camp is seasonally occupied, otherwise nobody else is on the island. Enjoy!

Cool! Did you spend much time there or drive the full 4 miles from tip to tip of the island? The north end is opposite Rancho Percebu and the south
end is Bahía Santa María.

It is a bit of heaven for us... the summer is best (for us).
We do often go on Memorial Weekend in the end of May, still a bit too cool, but it works out as other family members can get that weekend off and join
us. Here is last Memorial Day, on Shell Island:

Prior to hurricane Katerina (1967) there was no island. People would camp at Percebu and walk around to shell beach or walk across at low tide. We
started camping there pre-pavement in 1959. It was not always shell island or DavidKs beach (probably still is not on a formal map).

Correct, it was possible to drive the beach from Agua de Chale (Nuevo Mazatlan), north, around the lagoon (what we called Bahia Santa Maria before
there was a campo by that name there) and on north to a point across from Percebu (where a lagoon was).
After the 1967 chubasco and the big back bay creation (see shrimp boat grounded photos) is when it became an 'island'...
I began parking on one side of the south lagoon entrance and walking across to the island at low tide (around 1977) to hunt for shells. One trip, I
saw a VW camper van on the island and walked over to ask them how they got there... they showed me the track through the marsh grass and bushes that
eluded me when I drove between Santa Maria and Percebu on the dune buggy/salt flat road in the 70's.
From then on I camped on the island instead of Nuevo Mazatlan (except when the tide was too high and it was a true island all around).

Was told last month, that a Gringo bought several hundred acres of land at the entrance and is in the process of subdividing lots. Said he owns the
land from road to"shell beach." Anyone heard this yet?

Yes, some people who only visit think Baja is their private playground. Trespass to get to their beach. Camp right on the federal zone with their
car. But times they are a changin.

mtgoat666 - The sea wall at Victor's RV Park. We saw tides up to the wall. I guess it's even worse with a high tide and strong NW winds.
