reports of Impounding Luxury SUVs at Cabo?

Just heard a second hand report that police are following high end Luxury SUV's and other Vehicles to the Cabo Airpoort, then impounding them for not having plates, or being in the country to long?

anyone know if there is any truth to that.

Enlighten me please: if you were US citizen, with a vehicle registered in South Dakota. Do you need to move it out of Mexico every so often? I assume you need a TIP - so T indicates some sort of time deadline - right?
editZ; from what I'm reading, assuming I understand correctly, i don't even need a TIP for Baja (does that include Sur)

How it has been (updates appreciated):
As a tourist (FMM), your time in Mexico is limited to 180 days.
Some may live part time in Mexico, flying in and out. However, per FMM rules your property must not remain in Mexico when you leave. To have a home or car remain in Mexico after 180 days, you need the correct visa that allows for this non-tourist/resident avtivity.
