Discount tire

I thought given the state of the roads in Baja right now and how they seem to be eating tires I would share a Discount Tire Story and the value of buying their tire insurance certificates (new leave home without them ) . I have been driving down in Baja for 25+ years and obviously have had my share of flats and tire issues. I have probably been going to Discount in Solana Beach, Encinitas, and San Marcos for almost as long. I always buy the certificates and I have probably used the certificates 10+ times over the years and not once did I have an issue. The tires were always replaced with a smile and a thank you for using Discount Tire. My Dad has had similar experience and has probably turned in 15+ tires, but this last trip took the cake.

Dad borrowed my suburban to make a run down to the house and ended up getting a flat along the way. Not surprising as he drives like the car is stolen. He however forgot and left the flat tire at the llantera in GN when he got the new tire. As he said he had no room in the car for the tire, hum I said OK but Discount tire will need the tire to do the free replacement... Fast forward 2 weeks and we are at Discount tire in Encinitas and explain the situation to them and also to have them fix a nail that my dad picked up along the way. While looking at the tires they discovered one of the other tires had a large flap of tread coming off and you could see the belts (probably thanks to a pothole hit) only when the flap was open, not sure how they even saw that as it was near invisible when it was down.

So they replaced 3 tires (the nail was by the sidewall, the flap was exposing the belts and a 3rd tire was to make up for the tire we had to buy in Baja and replaced a tire with 40k miles on it. Dad ended up leaving the Discount Tire store with 3 brand new tires plus the new tire we bought in GN, Certificates on all 4 tires and a renewed appreciation for the great customer service we always get from Discount Tire. Total cost was something like $100.

Just thought I would share a great customer service story.

Thank you...

Most of my Discount Tire experiences have been positive. My current set of Hankook Dynapro ATM tires are from Discount in San Marcos. They have replaced all four tires over the past two years because when I would get a flat and plug it myself or have a tire shop in Baja put a patch in it and reported it to Discount, they replaced the tire. I traveled about 15,000 miles in Baja last year for the road guide and map work. Not all my flats were last year, or in Baja, but most were. Harald even put a plug in one, in La Paz, while in a wheelchair!

Since this Discount does not stock the Hankooks in the shop anymore, I sometimes need to wait a day or more for one to come in from another store (Arizona usually). I need to pay only for a new warranty ($20) for the new tire, so "almost free" tires if they fail or get a flat.

The last flat I got was here (in San Marcos), and it was a nail hole, slow leak. For the first time, the counter guy at Discount (new guy?) gave me some guff about where I drive my truck, "in construction zones or what??" making repeated comments that they have replaced so many tires for me.

I told him that was your guy's choice, so what... as I never asked for new tires, and paid the road hazard warranty each time. I don't like getting a flat, it takes time to deal with them, an hour or more each time plus fixing the flat on the road. He just made it seem I was out looking for a way to get a flat!

A plug will out last the tire. Some guys take advantage of a company’s policies because they think it’s owed to them. Get a plug kit and learn how to use it for fux sake!

Hahaha

There is company here in LA called Tires by Mark. For a set of 4 Nitto's they are always $100 to $200 cheaper than Discount Tires.

Give a guy a break woody. You could not figure out how to charge a battery, or when to replace it not too long ago. :P

I love good customer service stories since most of us (me) tend to only publish bad experiences. I do try to post good ones though too because they are so rare :-).

Discount has my business for a long time too. The only complaint that I have is that it takes forever to do a rotation, etc. even when I have an appt. There is a new store that opened though near me that no one has figured out yet so I can normally just drive right in!

Agree on that Kevin!
It is very cool of them to want to replace the tire even though a patch is fine with me. Perhaps the $20 warranty charge is all they need to make for that tire?

The other great customer service are the free replacemente break pads at AutoZone. Never had bad customer service at the one in Ocean Beach where I went for years.
