Rancho Doña Lala quesos on highway 1
I recently went to San Diego and got a ride with some friends who were going south to come home. They stopped at a little store that was so cute, I
had never seen it before.
It is called Rancho Doña Lala quesos, but although they have wonderful cheeses which she allowed us to try, they have so much more - interesting
candies and jams etc.

Very cool discovery!
Km. 85.5 puts it just north of San Vicente (Km. 90).
A very good restaurant is at Km. 88.5, 'Mi Ranchita' along the short (1 km.) road to the mission of San Vicente Ferrer.

Blanca a question about cheese for you or anyone on Nomad. Many years ago we helped a Padre in La Purisima named Luis Ruggera. He was from northern
Italy. He made a trip back home and when he returned he had brought with him some white cheese. It was in a brick form. It was somewhat hard, I think
it crumbled when cut. The taste was on the salty side with a somewhat strong cheese flavor as I would describe it. It tasted really good. I think it
was made from goat milk. If I wanted to purchase something similar as I described what would I look for. I seldom see any cheese made from goat milk
around here.
Maybe this place has something similar.

Sounds like that would be queso de chiva (NOT chivo!). A lot of local tiendas sell it.... ask around. I'd snarf up some every chance I got, love the
stuff. Also if you know of any goat ranchos nearby ask if they make it; I've got it straight from the kitchen before too.
I don't have a BUCKET LIST, but I do have a F***- IT LIST a mile long!

Quite a bit of queso de chiva around these parts, it is salty and our local store usually has it. The ranchos have it too....for sure this tienda
my friends went to had it!

Just south of Vizcaino on the east side of the highway is a small store with a big sign "queso de chiva". When they have been open they have a few
types of queso from the nearby ranches. Always good.

the ranch cheeses are excellent and most stores carry them too...my favorite is queso fresco which is a softer cheese but firm enough to grill in my
casts iron pan in little squares...fantastic! You ask for either vaca o chiva...I prefer the cow fresh cheese.
You can ask to try any cheese...I always try it first as some are salty and some are not...each is different.
The hard chiva cheese is like feta for crumbling on salad or whatever and is more pungent.

And...the cheese lady at turnoff for San Nicolas. South of Bahia de Concepcion in Los Bomberos I believe. Delicioso!!

In Mulegé: the store "El Cacheno" at the "tope" (bump) south of the Bridge in Mulegé sells good Queso Fresco (chiva -goat- and vaca
-cow-) and also great Machaca (shredded dry beef) and another local place to buy cheeses and machaca (the guy who actually makes the machaca) is past
the mission (at "El Rebaje" https://goo.gl/maps/5f3BvFjWJ8s ) driving towards the baseball field right on the corner there's a small market-meat market (carnicería).. try
it... you'll like it.... mmmm.. mm ...m....
