HWY 5 bridge washout by Gonzaga
The new road is washed out. Lots of pictures and good road reports over on Talk Baja. For those that do not do Facebook, Can't help you out.

Hi, we got almost 6” of rain today at KM 46 on Hwy 5 south of San Felipe. Water is running down the arroyo next to the house. There seems to be a
lot of beach erosion from the wind (30 mph or so). They are working on Hwy 5 between KM60 and KM75 so it is likely in really bad shape around KM60
where the wash crosses Hwy 5. More news tomorrow after it’s light. Seems like power was off in San Felipe today too.

I received an update from some folks at Gonzaga. Not looking too good.
"""There is a bridge washed out at K122, or 15 miles north of Gonzaga. You can get around on the west side with clearance and 4 wheel drive. They
met XXXX at the washout and he said there were 3 or 4 more washouts before Huerfanito.
One is impossible to pass. They are trying to get reports on Hwy. 1 now."""
Have also heard that the military is closing the 5 from Mexicali to Gonzaga for 3-4 days.

Just got another update:
Currently no way to get to Gonzaga. 15 washouts that require 4wd and one that is impassable. On Hwy 1, Catavina is "under water".

Catavina "dips" are often wet even after periods of no storms....but the storms really fill them up. They also seem to always be broken up pavement
at their low points.

I've always wondered why they wouldn't build bridges to span the Catavina dips. Aside from the obvious monetary reasons, it seems best to let the
arroyos swell/retreat beneath a structure then to always be in a constant state of repair/restoration.

One problem with Catavina is it is in the middle of nowhere. Long commute for the workers or a camp needs to be set-up. A complication.

Bridges cost a lot. A lot!
The arroyo xings in catavina are cheap. When they are undriveable, it’s for just a few hours, perhaps a day.
For the limited traffic, existing xings are adequate, and very thrifty!
