That's how Gardner did it in 1960's Hunting the Desert Whale to explore Isla Arena. This is the dune island between Guerrero Negro Lagoon and
Scammon's Lagoon.

maybe not the dunes you are looking for, but it is definitely a dune field and has the highest face drop in Baja - around 55 m (180 ft)
30°19'58.50"N, 115°47'18.58"W
highest dunes around Guerrero Negro are about 40 m (130 ft) - that is above sea level. Their faces are rarely taller than 10 m (33 ft)
largest one I know in the Altar Desert is about a 120 m (400 ft) face

I drove by that sand cliff Harald... and while it is a blow-sand face and high, it really is not in a 'dune field' in the normal sense, is it?
The sun had just gone down as we neared Hwy. 1 by El Socorro. This may be the side of the big sand cliff, too dark for the photo to show?
It was a great 57-mile trip, discovering 'Petroglyph Park' along the way.

it helps to have a decent editing program for images - especially if you like to promote Baja with books and articles (this one done with Photoshop
Elements - fairly inexpensive)

much further.
