That guy could get sh!t done.
It might take a while, and be a bit stressful, and be a colossal waste of money but...

If Salma Hayak comes with the Wild Wild West car I'll go in with you fish.

I forgot about her. All the more reason...;)

I was thinking TV show. Was not a fan of the movie except for the state of the art production.
And Selma is always good.

How to get to The Trestle

32 43.739, -116 11.010
canyon Trestle driving instructions
take I-8 east toward El Centro. Exit at Imperial Highway (Highway S2), and turn north toward Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Continue for 4 miles to unpaved Dos Cabezas Road, and turn left. Veer left after 1.1 miles, then continue 4.5 miles heading west north of the train tracks. After 4.5 miles, cross the train tracks and turn left on the west side of the tracks. Continue .9 miles; turn left. Left at .3 miles, right to Mortero Palms.

Rating *****
length 6.5 mile - 5 hour 40 minutes (Round trip). Moderate/Hard.
Elevation 1980 - 3300 feet
Access A higher clearance car is preferred.

Hiking to the train Trestle, a boulder hike.
The Spanish name for the area close by is Piedras Grandes (Big Rocks), this sums it up nicely.

Starting the hike, notice the gigantic boulders while hiking up Palm Canyon.
The best way up is keeping right on a steeper boulder free slope. (Pick up the trail)

Once at the palms, the best way up is over the boulders on the right, way above the canyon is the best place to be.

Once past the palms it gets easier as a trail appears.

At point photo 10 down, prepare for the descent into Goat Canyon.
The first part of the hike was challenging, this part is even more so...

The canyon narrows. At point Photo 11 falls, it's getting interesting, as some dry waterfalls pop up.

At point Ended there is a sheer drop, that was more than enough to stop us.
A nice place to see part of the Trestle and head back.

Hiking time: 3 hours in, 2 hours 40 minutes out.

Don't be fooled by the shortness of this hike in miles.

With special thanks to http://www.anzaborrego.net For pointing out this hike.

How to get here:
Take the EC 119 (Number is on the road markers) Dos Cabezas (easiest), or the EC 109.
There are a couple of new roads, made for the windfarm, making it a bit more complicated.
A high clearance 4x4 car is recommended, but you probably can do without the 4x4.
While crossing the railroad, turn right and immediately turn left away from the railroad.
At the end turn right into the Mortero Palms parking.

Load the hike in: GPX or KML (Google Earth file) Tip: use the right mouse key and select save.

Thanks, Paul for the exact directions. Years ago Fishin' Rich (before he moved to Abreojos) encouraged me to go check it out... never did (yet)!

The Spreckles mansion is the site of two controversial deaths; one is still being fought in court by Rebecca Zahau's family as murder, perpetrated by the owner's brother (initially ruled a suicide by local investigators). The other, somewhat related, death is the son of the owner - the son somehow fell from the top of the stairs. Couple days later, Rebecca was found hanging from the balcony. The deaths have been the subject of one of Ann Rule's true crime books, as many facts brought up at trial (of the brother for murder) pointed to his guilt. Probably haunted now.

Also the last large single parcel of land on Coronado.
Guess it was all big estates back in the day.
Spreckles built the Hotel Del also.
My condolances to the family who owned the mansion during the trajadies.

The Spreckels Theatre in San Diego is where one can see how onyx from El Mármol, Baja, was used to beautify old buildings.

I saw the King & I (with Yul Brenner) there in the 80s and Spinal Tap in the 90s!
