If you're driving your truck that far, why not just take it all the way into Mexico? Why spend the extra money for a rental car and insurance? Just go with an annual policy on your truck and you're good for a trip anytime.

The big question (as a result of a big foul-up).

I recently noticed the registration on my truck is expired. I guess the notice never caught up with me.

Can I get Baja insurace with expired registration? Would it be valid?

What could go wrong if I drive it down there with expired registration?
What happens when I try to cross back into the US?

I still have Washington registration and I'm not registering it in California.
Maybe S. Dakota. But I'm still working on that.

Walking across and renting a car seems better...

What if you park it in San Ysidro? With expired tags, it's tow bait.

And I'm not sure I can stand waiting at the border for 2-3 hours ever again in a vehicle.
I almost bought a Jeep for the trip but it had a stick and I remembered that border torture. So am waiting for and automatic.
That is the nature of all my scheming to avoid that by either walking or flying across.
And I still think if I fly up I will park the plane at TJ and walk across so I don't hassle with plane paper work.
But ideally I get finished up with the US and stay in Baja.

In a private parking lot?
I have gotten tickets for it at Lax longterm parking. But that is City owned so the parking cops cruise it.

I have no idea where you planned to park. Good luck!

Be careful driving around with expired tags. I know Carlsbad has some kind of license plate readers installed, not sure how they react.

There are several private lots right near the walk across.
And yes, I would rather leave it parked.
I may still take the train instead of sneaking down there.
Trying to shave minutes off the trip.
But Uber/Train won't add more than an hour to it. And the piece of mind knowing my truck is safe might be worth it.
And a nice train ride down the beach too!

And then there is that 9-10mpg thing. Very wasteful to drive an unloaded truck like that.
I barely drive now so the 5-10 miles a week is about a gallon.
Funny is that it doesn't burn much more under full load.
A cheap rental car pays for itself in fuel savings and is a whole lot easier to drive.
My truck takes 2 hands at all times. And very good energy management skills if you want to stay out of the ditch or avoid an accidental crushing of small cars...

Pesca, Some of the near border parking lots at San Ysidro
have gone up in price. Was by the Baja Insurance kiosk
at the foot of the Outlet of the Americas a couple weeks
back, $30 for one day, this was on a Sat., don't know the price mid week nor
the price of the larger lots, one is on the west side of Hwy 5,
adjacent to the last offramp before you enter TJ
or the other one on the east of 5, I believe it's by the Jack
in the Box

Thanks.
I scared myself out of driving my truck.
But plan to get this method dialed in...
Both at San Ysidro and Otay.
Walking across is where it's at.

I am not getting the complications you are having Mike?
If it is registered in Washington, that is fine... Heck, they even let Canadians drive into Baja!

Fishead,
Why aren’t you flying that go-fast airplane you are always talking about? You can’t drive your car?

Stop planning. Just do it!

I plan the heck out of going SOB, something about getting
old/older. Wasn't always that way, back in the day, no
Mex Insurance, clearing Ensenada, a beer between my legs
until reaching the old Cardon RV Park La Paz. Wonder how
many younger BN's do the same, was lucky not to have
any negative incidents. Now I'm very
detailed, cautious, too much analysis I suppose, trying
to eliminate the things that might jump up and bite. Especially for a semi perm move of yrs.

This is taking my normal military style assault planning.
And I didn't have all the details until today.
Some final packing and a good breakfest and I will Uber to the Irvine Amtrak station.
I would love to have my rollie cart full of stuff onboard a southbound train and be watching the scenery go by at about noonish.
So stay tuned for a whirlwind tour. Ensenada Friday night... always fun.
Is Cinco De Mayo celebrated the Ensenada? I would think it was invented there... at Hunsong's probably...

I need to be back here (Costa Mesa) for an appointment on the 9th latest. So train ride home.
Don't need the truck yet. Best not to risk the expired regestration. Safe at home better. And a 10 minute walk across on the way home versus 2+ hours to bring truck home.
No plane set up for the trip yet... working it...
But I'm riding the train for you...;)

I don’t believe it!
Post photo proof you actually made it out of Orange County without your momma holding your hand and leading the way.

Yes, The Orange Curtain is still holding in.
The county hasn't squeezed all the money out of me yet.
But that should happen at about noon. And then I will probably be escorted out of town...
To the Greyhound station.
I am changing my mind... again... no train ride folks.
I can ride buses right from my front door almost.
An the quickest at like 4 hours.
Long day ahead...
