he's calling it a Corbina, (with a B) but it does not look to me to be the California Corbina, (Menticirrhus undulatus) so I am confused once
again by local fish names . Maybe Shortfin Corvina (with a V) Cynoscion parvipinnis?
also called sea trout?

Yeah corvina is a croaker like a white sea bass which is not a bass at all.
I thought so. But have never seen one that big up here.
Basically they patrol the surfline eating soft shell crabs that wash out and little bait fish.
I caught 1 about a foot long once... but let him go.
But see them around...

It is really hard to distinguish form the photos but I have not heard of CorBina South of Jesus Maria.

Yes, his bobbles or chin whiskers on Sr. CorBina.
He has radar...
And I haven't seen Corvina that big.
Spotfin and Shortfin croakers is what we carch sometimes but much smaller.
Are Corvinas croakers?

Corvina, Croaker family, tastes like white seabass. These were caught about 40 miles north of Todos Santos. The first was caught with a Sierra
Killer (Like an oversized Kastmaster - Jansen Inshore Tackle - CSL), the other in photo was caught with a small Rapala type lure. Also caught a pargo
with the Rapala. I was up that way looking for Robalo / Snook. Water right now is on the cold side and green with surf - Slow. I did hook something
nice this morning, but lost it in the surf. The Lisa - Mullet should be moving in soon - Large Roosters to follow. Tight Lines Amigos

Or any at all in Baja Sur.
The mentions of Jansens tackle shops in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo marina (the old "La Playita") reminded me...
Jansens is by far the best (meaning reasonably priced and good quality and selection) tackle shop in Baja.
I miss it when I'm up near Loreto.
Suddenly, basic chrome spoons are $160, or eight bucks.
When you lose a few a day to rock-dwellers and sierra, it gets a little expensive.
Meanwhile, I've ordered (eBay, Amazon) my usual supplies of 3-oz A27 diamond jigs, that catch just about everything
while jigging and casting from a kayak.
Over the last several years, I've mostly left off beach fishing for the kayak.
Recently I even had to get a fishfingerer.
What's next, GPS?.
To keep this relevant, most fishing tackle in Baja is a ripoff; Jansens is good, but if you're not near Cabo, buy your fishing stuff in the North or
online. (PLEASE let me know I'm wrong. Ferremar is double what I consider reasonable)
Oh yeah, it's great to hear a new poster!
My first times in Baja involved extensive shore fishing,
especially when my speedboat sunk at anchor...

Yes, Jansens prices are very reasonable. He has them made and packaged. $5-6 for a lure is like buying north of the border.

This is getting good!
I need to tune into the shorefish action.
I follow fish!
And kayak fishing.
But I'm thinking small inflatable boat that I can beach launch anywhere a kayak can.
That way I can have full electronics and a bait tank.

I tried looking for those fish on sat map...
But I got lost...
I went all the way up to the salt works... and then to the far south end of Mag bay.
That 1st mouth looks interesting. That is alot of beach to fish.

Is Jeff Klassen or Stephan Jansen guiding trips down at CSL? I met Jeff Klassen many years ago when he had a little tackle shop at the entrance of Mar
de Cortez Hotel. He used to guide surf fishing trips there. He then went to Crocodile Bay in CR to run their fishing operation, if I remember right.
I'm heading to Cabo in July and would love to get in some surf fishing!
