Foul Weather gear in Baja
Hola amigos, my friend has invited me to help him move his sailboat back up from La Paz to California, from what he tells me it is a pretty WET ride
bashing up north against the wind/waves.
I am on the hunt for some foul weather gear, does anyone happen to have some hiding in the back of a closet that they would be willing to lend/sell to
me? Or any leads on where I might be able to track some down here in Baja?
I'm a medium size guy, thanks friends!

Ask a Mexican panga fisherman. Many of them are fully suited up (and also many are not) in yellow or orange foul weather gear. Pants and jackets.
It is indeed a WET and bumpy trip from Baja to the US !!!

harbor freight products are the source of the idiom "buy cheap, buy twice"
sailing for days on end in the wind/wet can be miserable experience without good gear. i would spend extra and get good foul weather gear, comfort is
king, price is secondary

Having heard from people who crewed on a northbound ("uphill") trip from Cabo... they said "never again!" Southbound is a joy as you are with the
current and the winds, all southbound. Northbound is endless tacking into the wind and against the current... unless you use the motor (if there is
one). People crew going south then fly back home! You have been warned! 
[It will be great to hear of your experience, so if you do go through and do it, please share!]
Will you have satellite internet ability (inReach or Spot)? Facebook updates?

Even with a motor, going South bound is way, way more enjoyable.
I boated on the Pacific for years. Did many runs from San Diego to Ensenada.
No way I'm doing the Cabo to Cali route.
Tell that guy to sail it to San Carlos in Sonora. Then put it on a truck and send it to Cali. The marina in San Carlos is all setup for this.

The problem is every one brings their boats up at the wrong time/season due to insurance/hurricanes. We brought a 58 foot trawler up from PV to San
Diego in oct/nov and it was no big deal. It was nice compared to the Caribbean two step from Florida to the canal and on to PV.

Don't let the naysayers dissuade you! Yeah, it'll be a bumpy ride (I helped a friend do that run one time around Easter), but many adventures are.
Enjoy it for what it is! 
Note: I assume your friend is competent, but in addition to foul weather gear we were using safety harnesses on deck a lot of the time during that
one: Be safe! |

yessir, he is a professional delivery captain and has made the north run many times, including in this particular sailboat, he has all the safety gear
but we needed to get our own foul weather stuff
I have acquired a very nice Gill offshore jacket, gloves, and boots and some Henri Lloyd bibs! Its no harbor freight raincoat but it should get the
job done!
I agree, most great adventures suck while youre in it, but they usually make for the best stories afterwards!

Best route from Cabo to California is via Hawaii. Sail the trades, don’t fight em.
