What a great channel. I'm hooked (get it?). Check this clip where he gets a guy with a new Toyota out of the sand but then has to take over the driving and outsmart the truck's computer to keep him unstuck. Customer learns a few valuable lessons in the process, hopefully. Hilarious.

Sad to see such driver fail!
1) Too much air pressure in the tires.
2) Over reving and spinning tires.
3) Low range not best in sand as it causes the spinning.
4) If he learned how the traction controls worked before he went off road this may have been avoided.
5) Finally, instead of trying to climb straight up a dune, go at a angle and circle out of a bowl.

I strongly disagree with that one! Heavy throttle use causes spinning trying to overcome resistance. I use my gears to keep the engine in the right rpm range for the load.

Even in my Trooper that has "torque on demand" the performance is better locked in low range, unless you are able to travel at higher speeds!

I am off road almost daily these days, and on any challenging, or fragile ground I am in low range from the start.

Edit; I watched the Tacoma episode again, the successful escape from the bowl was in 2nd, and 3rd low range!

Where is the fun in that? I have always been of the opinion that the journey is as important as the destination, and frequently more important!

I have gotten "delayed" seeing what she can do before, and probably will again (remember Arroyo San Raymundo?). Hopefully I will be smart enough to have a plan B, such as back up, or self recovery tools!

Sand is very different than other conditions... Spinning tires is NOT the best method... it only digs you in deeper. Since the video shows that the tires were not correctly deflated for sand, it was all they could do to keep taking runs, at speed, to get out.

Low Range is a slow, crawling gear range and makes the tires spin in sand.
If he had learned his traction systems then he could have tried CRAWL if it was an Off Road TRD, to get unstuck. Sad when one buys an expensive vehicle and doesn't bother to read the owner's manual or watch the many YouTubes on how things like A-TRAC, MTS/CRAWL, Deflating for sand, all work to keep you moving off road. Doing what I suggest keeps you from needing the traction gizmos as you won't get stuck...

The gem is to not get stuck in the first place, and deflating the tires to below 20 psi (15 is typical) is the first step when your vehicle's tires begins to spin instead of float on a surface in 4WD.

A quick press of the VSC switch turns off the throttle cut so you don't lose power to the drive tires (called TRAC OFF by Toyota). This is similar to limited slip differentials, front and rear. This is the most beneficial mode in high range 4WD.

For you late model Toyota 4x4 owners, the only possible benefit to spinning the tires is in mud or snow, to clear out the tread and get fresh bites. Your traction controls do everything they can to stop tire spin, as it is counterproductive.

To allow the tires to spin without any traction control braking action, simply stop and hold in the VSC switch for a few seconds (called VSC OFF by Toyota). This is just old-fashion open differentials, no traction control, no throttle cut that prevents spinning the tires.

You wouldn't want to go at an angle. It would roll over. Needed to go out the other side.
