Being in the Commonwealth has its advantages...
Being a citizen of the British Commonwealth allows one to immigrate to New Zealand, which has very strict immigration regulations, and a very
successful response to COVID.
When it comes to COVID: I'll take the Queen and New Zealand or Canada any day. (England- not so much...)

New Zealand has a population of less than 5M ppl. It has more land size than the UK, which has 70M ppl.
New Zealand is two islands with no border countries. Very few ppl go there for business, which helped greatly in the early days.
Of course NZ has great Covid numbers.

NZ did have outbreaks of covid, and they stopped it thru strict public health measures— what you call “lockdown.”

As for getting back, and the official memo seems to say pretty clearly that "this action does not prevent U.S. citizens from returning home."
OK so far. But rules aside, people's attitudes matter, and I gotta wonder:
-- Will people be peeed off or hostile at a masked gringo turista pushing a cart around at Ley supermarket?
-- Will the nice people at pollos a la carbon places still be nice and serve me a medio pollo that makes a wonderful camp dinner?
-- Does Pemex still sell gringos gas? 
If those are all "yes" conditions, then I think I can make my usual trip which is made up almost entirely of solo kayaking and camping out by myself.
Ley supermarket is the most crowded place I ever go, and it seems hard to avoid resupplying a few times there. |
Just returned from a trip to San Jose and the East Cape. Flew in and Flew out of SJD. Drove around the south end of the Cape. They are happy to see
Gringos. NO problems anywhere. Never had my temperature checked so often. Restaurants, grocery stores, massage, drug store, lawyer's office. The
soles of my shoes got cleaned everywhere. They are managing the people and the virus with respect. No masks at the Pemex. We felt comfortable
almost everywhere.

seem to continue this pattern, not sure if this will change after our elections or not.. I surely hope so as I am looking to go this coming January...

Most Mexicans are prohibited from non-essential entry to USA, so ain’t wide open by any measure. Only open for gringos.

now that will be something - for others to be able to be beachfront for a while this season - kinda nice - sorry for the Canadians not getting to Baja
but glad for the others that have no room to camp there all season to be able to enjoy having more choices

Deaths per 100,000 population, USA: 70, NZ: 0.5, Canada: 27.
This is per 100,000 so total population is not a factor. Korea have 0.9 deaths per 100,000, China - 0.34, both countries have quite extensive land
border.
There was a spike in daily cases in NZ in September and was quickly contained. Unlike most other countries the 2nd wave in NZ was not higher than the
1st wave, and came down since September.
Deaths are lagging behind the new cases by ~ 1 month, the number of active cases and hospitalizations is more informative.
Right now people aged 20-50 account for the majority of new cases in the USA and Canada. They don't contribute much to mortality because are mostly
asymptomatic or mild symptoms, but are spreading the infection same well.
