Unwelcome in other countries, Americans are fleeing lockdowns and flocking to Mexico

https://www.yahoo.com/news/unwelcome-other-countries-america...

From LA Times:

Nearly half a million Americans flew to Mexico in October — the most recent month for which data is available — mainly to beaches on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

That figure was down by a third compared to last October, but it was a minor drop-off compared to a more than 80% decline in visits from Canada and Europe.

But the reopening has come at a price.

Coronavirus cases in the state spiked as soon as planeloads of tourists began arriving, with the weekly tally soaring from under 300 to a high of 802 during the first week in August.

Valeria Muñoz at first celebrated when the lockdown was lifted.

She and her husband, with whom she ran a horseback-riding business in Cabo San Lucas, had been living on savings for months, at times struggling to feed their 15 horses and even their two teenage sons.

Muñoz returned to work alone because her husband, Armando Covarrubias, had hypertension and was especially vulnerable if he contracted the virus.

Several times a week, Muñoz picked up groups of tourists at their hotels and drove them to the stables. She said the travelers — who came from the United States and Mexico — always wore masks when she arrived, but often removed them in the car.

‘Take yours off," she remembered one man urging her. "We're fine."

She contracted the coronavirus in October. Soon after, her husband fell ill. He battled the virus for more than a month, but died in November at age 61.

I guess she should not have let them de mask. I did the length of baja going north in sept. and returning south in nov. around 25 days total Took the ferry both ways and stayed in hotels and camped. It´s easy and safe if you take the proper precautions:light:.

I remember reading that when some of the first tourists arrived at a recently reopened resort in Cabo, they quickly removed their masks. One of them said "I'm on vacation - and that means a break from all of these rules and restrictions."

For what it is worth, The precautions and requirements for shoppers at the La Paz Walmart last month, were much more stringent than at the VA clinic I visited in Placer county this week!

Us Canucks, we can’t drive south due to the border closures. We are basically locked down now and will not be able to have Christmas with our family even. I am amazed that Mexico has not closed its border given the increased rates of Covid infections.

It is a real catch 22 since Mexico, Mexicans, really needs the tourists to survive.

Follow the science ppl.

The WHO says lockdowns do more harm than good. Especially for poor countries.

Post the link to the science.

Post the link to where WHO says whatever you say they say. And how do you reconcile your slavish devotion to WHO when your cult leader, don the con, said WHO was wrong, bad, China-supporting socialists, etc.

Why does it seem like you oppose restrictions because your life is all about I, me, mine?

I've posted it from the WHO about 10 times. Follow the science.

I'm no fan of Trump.

I oppose restrictions because they do more harm than good to everyone. They crush small businesses and their employees/families. Am going skiing for 7 days in Telluride on Thursday. Lockdowns have little bearing on my life. Life is good.

San Miguel County, Telluride, recently went to Level Red. The virus is present in town. Shouldn't worry JZ though as he's proceeding with caution.

Sugar Bowl on Donner Summit is open

We are in the purple, stay at home category here in Nevada and Placer counties, but the ski areas are allowed to open with restrictions.

No on site ticket sales. Only prepaid, limited reservations, or the small number of season passes sold late last season are able to ski or ride!

No ski area lodging available for guests, but I am not sure if that applies to private residences in the area.

No access to the lodge, except for restrooms. Your vehicle is your warm up shack! (I expect a fleet of RVs on the road, and in the parking lot)

Masks required at all times, and of course, social distancing in lines or outdoors around the lodge.

I bought my pass last March, and live less than an hour away, so it is reasonable for me to go enjoy playing with gravity! This will be just a couple of more challenges added to skiing my way toward old age.

I drove to La Paz to finish dental work that was started before covid19 was discovered in the US. One of the three implants I got in February was not healing like the other two, so waiting even longer was a risk of it's own.

Try and find a dentist north of the border that would take over work started in Mexico!

I followed the same distancing and isolation in Baja that I am following now in NorCal, which is not 100%, but I am cautious and respectful of the risk to others.

You went to Mexico because it was cheap, and stayed for a vacation. Many dentists in Cali. would have been happy to get the work.

Own it.

He helped keep a dentist and her staff employed with food on their table. They don't have safety nets in MX like the US.

Send a donation if you feel so bad, you do not need to be there in person.
What about your dentist in Cali. ?They don't need the money?
