8 pm tonight to Wed am, some Baja sites may be down.

The power company is doing some work, changing power poles in Torrance, CA where the servers are for VivaBaja.com & OldMissions.com and any other Baja sites maintained by ElectraWeb.com. As Arnold says, I'll Be Back!

Seriously? :?:

I'm surprised there's any web hosting company without a backup power system. Does Doug physically manage his own data center?

Power to the site is one thing...signal out is another. Here in Nevada county, people with a back up power source are ok with ATT, but dead with comcast!

Why the difference?

Apparently ATT has back up power for their equipment, but Comcast hasn't risen to the challenge! It has been particularly annoying this year, with all the PGE "public safety power shutdowns" and the regular businesses providing WIFI not allowed to seat customers!

He's referencing Dick at Electraweb - someone who has gone out of his way for decades to make sure Baja info is available online.

I use different facilities (and no, of course I'm not running a data center). The San Diego and Atlanta facilities I've used since around '92 have diesel generator backups. I don't believe Kansas City does, and the BN site is hosted on a dedicated server (it's the only site on the system) in the Kansas City facility. I've only used KC for a couple of dedicated systems over the past 4-6 years or so (?).

Not that it matters much, but I've communicated - ad nauseam at this point - about moving this site to a different platform, and perhaps with some added features. I'm intending to move to a cloud-based account I already have and turning the server down at that point. fyi

I take it back, the KC facility now has diesel generator for backup.

Quote:

Our Kansas City datacenter is fed by three power components critical to datacenter infrastructure.

Primary power is received from Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) utility power. Designated a critical infrastructure building, KCP&L provides three power feeds to the facility. These feeds are connected in parallel and each draws from a different independent power grid.

Secondary and temporary power is supplied by UPS battery systems. We have sufficient UPS battery strength to assure continuity of power to the entire dedicated server facility. In addition, a separate UPS system maintains all critical networking infrastructure.

The third power comes from a 400 kilowatt diesel generator. Fuel access points on the ground level of the building allow us to refuel the generator tanks at any time. The generator can be run indefinitely to supply power to the facility.

In the event of loss of utility power, the automatic transfer switch moves the power source from utility to diesel generator. The UPS systems supply temporary power during the time required for the generator to fire up.
