Crossing border in leased vehicle
I tried calling Chase to get a 'letter' since I am leasing the vehicle. They say the letter will be prepared and sent. Never comes. Called last week
and they said it was mailed. I'm supposed to leave in 4 days and call them. Now they say you can't et a letter to cross the border period unless you
have military orders. I asked if IT was a loan, she said it wouldn't make any difference. This sounds ludicrous!!! We are only going to be in Baja a
week.
I bet countless people are crossing in leased or loaned vehicles every day. Is the letter required? What happens if I don't have it? Is it too risky?
I'm driving a 2020 SUV. I will be getting Mexican insurance of course.

I would think your Mexican insurance provider would require this letter as well in order to validate the policy??

All three of my Tacomas were leased... originally, through Toyota Financial. No letter. I was told they considered a lease the same as a financed
vehicle... and as long as you are fully insured showing them as the legal owners, that is all they require.
Just get the best auto insurance policy through Baja Bound (or another, but we all love Baja Bound here on Nomad as a sponsor) providing all the data
on the registration card.

You don't need a letter from them.
All you need is the registration in your name.

I'm trying to understand how having a leased vehicle is different from having one that has not been paid off.
In neither case are you the "legal owner"
If every vehicle that approached the border had neither legal ownership and/or a certified letter from the legal owner there would be no lines at the
border. (Wouldn't that be nice?)

We first started driving to Baja in my husband's work truck in 2003 - the truck was registered to his employer, not my husband so we got a letter from
the company or lean holder (can't remember which) in order to be legal. But if the vehicle is registered in your name I think you're good. I drove
my car while still financed, just made sure I have full Mex insurance coverage.

Thanks. Yeah, seems crazy and I guarantee that the hundreds of vehicles crossing the border don't have letters. They called me back and apologized
that the supervisor was not correct. I need to show proof of insurance with them as the lienholder and send it in. They will prepare the letter but
I'm not waiting for it. The truck is in my business name, but registered in my name and I have documents showing everything. Will keep multiple
copies. Thanks for the community input.
And yes, I did buy Mex insurance thru BajaBound due to their sponsorship. But $320 for a week is not cheap!

6 month or 12 month insurance policies are CHEAPER than daily-rate policies if you are going for a couple weeks or more in that 6 to 12 month
period... multiple trips or one long trip. They have a new Baja and Sonora region only policy that is extra special priced, too.
