Theft - Bay of Conception
We were camped at Playa el Requeson, Km 92 south of Mulege, at one of the palapas, late May.
We were sleeping outside on cots alongside our truck. During the night thieves took other camping equipment that was in the truck bed and under the
truck - Obviously we didn't hear a thing. The biggest loss was to our puppy - a month's supply of the dog food she likes best.
The overnight camping on this beach wasn't crowded but there were half-dozen other users.
Low-lifes!

rule in Baja - if you camp where a lot of pople go - expect theft. That is true even for commercial camp sites, Walmart parking lot, all popular
beaches.

Train that puppy to be a watch dog!
I also see some battery-powered motion sensor alarms are sold for camping…. If puppy is not a good watch dog.

So sorry that happened, John!
We last camped at El Requeson in 2007. The next several trips to Baja Sur, Requeson was too busy, so we adopted La Perla, just south. That was in 2009
(and again 2012, 2015, 2017). Never a problem. Maybe a sign that says "We are sick with Covid" will keep thugs from touching your things??

my Baja dog eats bad guys.
she is adorable with good people.
no idea how dogs tell good from bad.
she "arrested" purse snatchers in a restaurant twice.
the rest of the time she goes from table to table to get petted.
I got her because I was tired of repeated robberies at my house in La Paz.
If you want to protect your stuff and have a loyal traveling buddy - get a dog.
Baja Dogs are the best.

Motion sensors
I looked at those after the fact Goat - the one I liked the most was one that activated the sound of a dog barking! At least that might wake up our
dog if not run off the thief. Other sensors activate a light, or a loud alarm -
Neighbors might not appreciate it but it also may keep the crook away from their stuff.
I had read a post some time ago about not leaving your stuff unattended during the daytime, but we were less than 10' from the back of the truck.
Stuff is replaceable. Our puppy isn't much of a barker - we had her almost two years before we ever heard her bark.
Don - you are right, never know how fortunate we may have been to sleep through it.

That is pretty brazen.
Our dogs very rarely bark. But if a stranger came by the oldest one would have woke up the entire beach.
I'd definitely sleep through it w/o the dog though.

Years ago I had 2 akitas,they never barked. The not so nice one pulled a guy that was stealing firewood from my backyard back down the wall. The guys
yelling alerted me, Tojo never made a sound.

Here at home, I would love to go two nights without my dog barking at something! A couple of years ago near Gonzaga Bay, I woke up in my car and saw
that she was staring silently at a pack of coyotes right out in front of us.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

SOP for camping any where (especially Baja) was a big tent for Surfboards & kitchen and a small sleeping tent arranged so both openings face each
other with an easy up in the center with side covers all covered with camo netting from my Army/Navy store. When your site has a military flavor,
they will pick on others.
Displaying a Coyote/Wolf skull sends a cultural signal too. 
(As in crazier than they are, ready to die)
My Coyote skull goes on my truck antenna
A Mexican Pistol is best (male 90 lb. Boxer (Jax) has my back, I got his)

I had a bad experience with small motion sensor off Ebay. It works too well. Never knew what triggered it, there was nobody around - maybe a rat, a
night bird, or just a drift of hot air. Once it went off in the locked cabin of my car at the motel, absolutely for no reason. Terrible thing.

eBay "Personal Alarms" are good around camp when used as tripwires. They can be tied between a boat and motor, fish pole and tree, cooler and tent
stake. 5-pack for $15.
Yup, nothing like being woken up at night by a high-pitched squealing alarm that you can't tell what direction it's coming from.
Then you get out of bed, chase away the cows, and try to find the string with the pull-tab alarm plug on it to re-insert and shut the damn thing off.
Phew! Now that that's done, grab your cooler for a nice beer...

I have to admit i once was a camp thief. I loved going in the middle of the night into camp sites and rummaging through the coolers for free beer but
i was only 14.

Happened to a friend camping. Don't know where but thiefs were quiet. Couldn't happen to me as my dog would go ballistic long before they were
inside my perimeter.
I've also have something like this, mine works on 2 D batteries.

How is your dog restrained at night?
So how do you keep your dog at camp during the night?
Probably not in a kennel - tied with a rope or cord?
Inside a vehicle?
As you might surmise, Patron is more of a pacifist than a watch dog.

When we were still doing tent camping we kept Nacho in the truck at night, usually with a window 1/2 opened, never closed up. He loved it. He would
walk up to the truck waiting for the door to be opened. And NOBODY except us got near the truck with him in it, even though he's a little guy.

my dog is as free to move as I am.
The only scary moment ever was at one of the whale watching sites - she joined some coyotes and was gone for about 2 hours
I thought, I had lost her (many stories of coyotes "abducting" dogs)
she came back smiling
