Pamukkale Travertine Pools

We just spent 5 days traveling and went to Pamukkale to see the travertine white pools that you see in every Turkey travel guide. It was MAGICAL and wonderful and spell bindingly beautiful. I swam in the Kleopatra pool and pretended I was her and Les was my Marc Antony hahahahaha Hey, one can dream!!!!

We had a wonderful hotel with an included breakfast that was out of this world. It cost $30, walking distance to the entrance of the pools. We were only there for a day but I would have stayed for 3 and gone in the pool each day! Lukewarm waters with the columns that fell in the 3rd century earthquake under your feet.

Hierapolis is the whole town that was build around the pools and which crumbled completely in the earthquake. It must have been such a relaxing spa village. It covers a huge area and we rented a small scooter to drive around in. Under the strong sun, it was a good choice.

Here is what google has to say about Hierapolis:

Hierapolis was an ancient Greek city located on hot springs in classical Phrygia in southwestern Anatolia. Its ruins are adjacent to modern Pamukkale in Turkey and currently comprise an archaeological museum. The site has the Tomb of Philip the Apostle. The hot springs have been used as a spa since the 2nd century BC, with many patrons retiring or dying there. The large necropolis is filled with sarcophagi, most famously that of Marcus Aurelius Ammianos, which bears a relief depicting the earliest known example of a crank and rod mechanism. The great baths were constructed with huge stone blocks without the use of cement and consisted of various closed or open sections linked together. There are deep niches in the inner section, including the bath, library, and gymnasium. It was added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

It was incredible and pics to come once we get to Germany on the 14th, a week from now. My son lives there with his wife and my granddaughter. I am so excited to go and they sent me a photo of the German wines they bought in preparation for my visit! I must have done something right, what a kid!
