Private Health Insurance

Looking for info on health insurance for an expat with residencia. The person is not a citizen so I'm assuming that the Govt healthcare is off the table. Not talking stiches and small stuff, more like something that covers serious hospitalization and potential transport back to the states. Any leads / thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Google machine says:

"If you are self-employed, you can apply for IMSS insurance. IMSS can also be obtained by foreign residents by voluntarily enrolling and paying an annual fee."

There is public (IMSS) and private health insurance in Mexico. You may want private for better care.
Or maintain health insurance in usa plus an evacuation policy to get airlifted home for certain care you want from usa.

I have had AXA Health Insurance, first class coverage to the best facilities in country. Around $1800/year full coverage here in Mexico. Fortunately never have needed it.

Chose them after researching many reviews, including first hand accounts.

Most folks here cannot afford private Insurance or private hospitals, therefore the only option is IMSS. My experience seeing friends in IMSS compelled me to not depend on the public system.

Evac plan is a separate issue if required.

I have witnessed crowded, less than ideally clean conditions in La Paz. That along with doctors being mostly interns doing their stint in residency would be the two things that come to mind.
It has been a while, but I know folks that had unwarranted procedures, and at least two folks that went in with non life threatening issues, and didn't come out.
Others that had complications as a result of the same.

Given the choice, nobody chooses IMSS for anything serious, although Ciudad Obregon IMSS main hospital, if you can get in, is highly recommended.

We had insurance through this company, while living in Mexico, until I became medicare eligible and my wife began getting annual COBRA coverage by virtue of working for the US Federal govt. during each summer.

https://www.vumigroup.com/

We had very high deductibles (5k or even 10k in certain years) and never had a serious medical issue so we were never forced to use it. We paid out of pocket for the few things, medically, that we did have down here (colonoscopies, a bout with a UTI for my wife, a precautionary EKG for me).

We visited Mexicans friends who ended up in IMSS hospitals. Uh, get the private insurance. :smug:

Here is an easy method for determining the choice between IMSS and private.
Simply walk into the ER area of an IMSS facility. What you see there will aid in a quick decision.

Best health insurance is healthy living:
Eat less salt and junk food;
Exercise;
Staff lean;
Cover up from the sun;
Stay hydrated; and
Get sufficient sleep

Not all medical emergencies have to do with one's personal health. Accidents are also possibilities for which people want to be covered.
