British Columbia Vehicle Title
Can you provide a link to this "...recent, alarming post about having a vehicle impounded in Tijuana...."? I had not heard about it.
There were times in the past (say 7-15 years ago) where Aduana would sometimes ask for the original title to qualify for the Mexican mainland TIP, but
I haven't heard of anyone needing it since then. Simple registration has been fine.
Many of us still remember the admonition we were told, possibly in driver's education school, about NEVER traveling with your original "pink slip"
(yes, I learned to drive in California) as someone could theoretically obtain possession of it and sign it over to themselves. I never heard of it
happening.......but that admonition still reverberates through the hollows of my brain in old age.

I think that if all I had was an "Owners Certificate", I would get it notarized, and stamped as a certified copy. It may not solve the problem, but
it could wind up being something that works in your favor.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

Considering it's the first and only story like that I've read since joining BN several years ago, and that there is no history, and nothing recently
similar, I would just do some due diligence and proceed as normal. I'd even look into why having your passport, DL, insurance, and current valid
registration with the same names shouldn't be sufficient.
Whatever your government provides if they need an "ownership" certificate should be sufficient, if that's all Canada provides. In California, there
is actually a "pink" ownership certificate and a registration certificate. But, all states, and countries are different.
How does Canada handle ownership of a financed vehicle? Do you get the same single document? Maybe that's why Mexico wants to see if the bank owns
it, or you do? Perhaps if the bank owns the vehicle, you might just walk away and say adios? Criminals rarely worry about their FICO scores.
