TIP for stored RV's and vehicles
Updated rules for stored RV's in Baja:

Saw this article and called to update our South Dakota registration for our travel trailer that we store here for the summer and were informed that
South Dakota no longer renews registrations for out of state applicants. You have to have a South Dakota drivers license to renew the registration.
Any suggestions for other registration options?

I haven't heard about any changes in South Dakota. Montana is another option friends have used. You might be able to get a permanent plate depending
on year.

Just register you vehicles where you live. If you live in CA, then register with dmv. If you live in baja, then register vehicles in baja. If you
have to game the system to avoid taxes and afford registration, then perhaps you can’t afford the vehicle and should buy something cheaper.

Agreed that ALL SD plates, except those who actually live in SD, should start following the same rules the the US follows. We in the US would be
screaming from the trees if we allowed “false“ registrations from Mexicans in our country.
I suggest the Mexican govt. starts confiscating all vehicles whose plates dont correspond with the DL of the owner, as in the states. Just think of
all the money that could go towards fixing our roads!
Or people could just do the right thing and plate their vehicles here as it is easy and cheaper than in the states.
For example we just imported our newer, 2015,SUV that we bought in the states, in La Paz for a grand total of $2,500 pesos! Took 2 hours and done.
Or just keep trying to scam the system and hopefully lose your vehicle.
If you, or your vehicle, spends significant time here...just quit spending time and money to lie, and get it registered here!

The window for autos eligible to import are limited to year of make, hence disqualifying my 1980s vehicles, (too old).
The "Chocolate" program would be a solution if the VIN numbers started with a letter, not in my case. At this point just waiting to see if the program
is extended and offered to VINs beginning with numbers.
The other solution would be to wait a few more years, then I could register locally as "Clasico".

What kind of placas does it have?
Frontera?
Can you drive it on the mainland?
Just curious since there is a big difference.

At least your waiting and evaluating your option. Most are driving newer Lexus“s and effectively flipping off the Mexicans as they drive by and
abuse them.
I would love to see those confiscated on the side of the road!

Just a reminder....
It is legal to have a residence in more than one state.
It is legal to have vehicles registered in more than one state.
It is not legal to have a driver's license in more than one state!
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

its 2023... a 2015 car is 8yrs old maybe nine depending when it was sold

Don't you have it backwards? Vehicles (depending on year) that start with a number are the ones that have always been importable. It's the ones
starting with a letter, i.e. non- NAFTA-made, that you can't import.

To plate many cars from states to Mexico you cant import. too new to old or vin thank you SD and AZ.

I believe the Discover Baja article is incorrect where it states:
"If you have a home in <México> and leave your vehicles there, you do not need a TIP as long as the vehicle is not on the street and always has
current license plates and registration."
If that home is outside of the free zones in Mexico, you definitely do need a TIP. They probably meant to say Baja.
