CARRETERA 1 or SAN FELIPE ?

I?m going to cycle down Baja California and my question is:
Concerning the route from the US-border to Desierto Central: would you recommend cycling down Carretera 1 or taking the way across San Felipe and Puertecitos?
I think I prefer the route across San Felipe since it is more deserted, it?s easier to camp and the beaches are nearer. On the other hand the road south of San Felipe is said to be in a very bad condition. Is it impossible to use bicycles on that road?
What are your suggestions?
THANK YOU!

If I had my choice I would opt for the San Felipe road south, It is really rough in a car but is fun with a mountain bike that isn't too heavily loaded. I would not bike the main road, it is twice as narrow as any thing in the US and has no shoulders. They do ride it a lot but I never was an Evel Kneivel when it came to bicycle riding. Scares me to death and peees of the truck drivers.
