Beer Vote

David K - 6-5-2005 at 09:29 PM

I think we did this before? But, what the heck?!

Correction on the spelling of one: It is 'Negra Modelo' as beer is La Cerveza... so 'Dark' would also be feminine. Thanks to the Nomad who alerted me!

Tecate rules as the best beer in Baja Ca.

capt. mike - 6-6-2005 at 07:13 AM

i sure like negro mod, but i really want to try the TJ beer. i don't see it for sale hardly anywhere, well never really.

bajagrouper - 6-6-2005 at 07:24 AM

I keep seeing ads up here in Northern California for Tecate Beer, $13.99 +tax for a 30 pack...thats's 30 x 12oz cans...how much is it in Baja???

Oso - 6-6-2005 at 07:50 AM

The TKT you get in the U.S. is not the same as what you get in Mexico.

Also, this list omits Kloster's and the very best of all: Nochebuena.

But, in all fairness, Kloster's is draught only (cerveza de barril) or used to be, anyway. It's brewed in Monterrey and available in restaurants in Mexico City and the central region. Nochebuena is a bock that is only available once a year around December. I have seen it along the border here.

David K - 6-6-2005 at 07:56 AM

Thanks Oso, I just made the poll on the spur and was listing beers I have seen in Baja. Because Noche Buena is a seasonal (Christmas time) beer, I didn't list it.

You are sure right about Tecate... The Tecate sold here (in CA) does not taste as good!

Paulina - 6-7-2005 at 07:57 PM

Oso listed my favorite, Nochebuena. I look for it every year, but making sure that the date on the label is the right year. I've had to drink a last years brew, not complaining, but felt like I was missing out on a tradition.

TKT would get my second vote, but I also agree that it tastes better in Mexico.

David K - 6-7-2005 at 08:13 PM

What happened to Pacifico (the only brand I ever saw you drink):o:o:o??? Paulina, you are scaring me!:?::?::?:

Packoderm - 6-7-2005 at 08:18 PM

I like Leon Negra, but I have only seen it in the Yucatan - or is that Yucatan without the "the?" I don't wish to ruffle any feathers.

Dave - 6-7-2005 at 08:22 PM

Odd about complaints that tecate is not the same in the U.S. The brewery does not have a seperate run that only goes to the States. It's the same stuff. There IS a difference in the product from Baja and the mainland. Check the label to see where it was brewed.

Mike, you can find it in the Smart & Finals down here. But for the REAL DEAL go to the brewery. If you are free some Wednesday I will meet you and/or any other nomad interested there.

pokey - 6-7-2005 at 08:25 PM

I voted for Bohemia however I usually drink Pacifico. When I drink Tecate it has a noticeable soapy/detergent after taste. I'm talking about caguamas so there very well could be. If Bohemia was sold in Caguamas I would dring it exclusively :bounce: Anybody know where to get a neoprene beer jacket for caguamas?

Dave, I was once told that Tecate in bottles is from Tecate, BC... and Tecte in cans are from Monterrey... Tecate for the U.S. is in cans... that I have tasted... and it is NOT the same beer as in Baja.

Of course the cans have U.S. labling (English) that are sold here... so is it not possible that a different alcohol level brew is made for export...? Any poor non-Mormon soul can tell you that any brand beer sold in Utah is NOT the same beer sold in the rest of the U.S.

Dave - 6-7-2005 at 09:15 PM

It could be that the only tecate sold in the U.S. comes from Monterrey, don't know. However a tecate exec that I trust tells me that the same beer is sold north/south of the border. I don't dwell on it cause I don't drink it much....unless someone else is buying.

David K - 6-7-2005 at 09:18 PM

I should bring some U.S. Tecate down to your deli when that exec is there... and let's do a taste test.. blind that is... Tecate U.S. can, Tecate Mex. can and Tecate bottle.

JZ - 6-7-2005 at 09:21 PM

Pacifico all the way.

The "T" in Tecate is for terrible!:lol::lol:

David K - 6-7-2005 at 09:32 PM

Well... as I said, the Tecate here is not very good. Pacifico is a favorite of mine, as is Dos Equis Special... and Carta Blanca... and Bohemia... and Mexican sold Tecate in bottles, oh that Tijuana Morena (Dark) on tap at the brewery is awesome too!

My vote was 'Like more than 1...' but if I had to pick one, Pacifico would win... as it seems to be doing here.

The squarecircle - 6-7-2005 at 09:37 PM

Try Tecate on draught (sp ? ). It is better than sweet spring water. Tecate tap beer is found in your better fueling stations. >>>Best Regards, >>>sq.

JZ - 6-7-2005 at 09:48 PM

Tecate has a sweet, somewhat odd taste to me. Especially, the packaged up 6-pack bottles sold on the mainland (maybe that's the same as they sell in the US?).

Capt. George - 6-9-2005 at 08:14 PM

PACIF- HIC - ICO

MexicoTed - 6-10-2005 at 06:08 PM

Give me a Tecate in a can with a lime any day. In fact back when the cans were tin, it was even better. If I can't have that make it Pacifico unless we are going fancy, then Bohemia. The dark beer from the Tijuana Brewery was actually pretty good too.
Ted

rpleger - 6-10-2005 at 06:21 PM

Mexicali ruled in the 50s but Tecate rules today.

Mismo ??

MrBillM - 6-10-2005 at 06:23 PM

There was an article in the Los Angeles Times awhile back about Imported Mexican Beer which stated, among other things, that the NAFTA agreement REQUIRED as of a certain date that the beer had to be standardized to comply with U.S. requirements and that the domestic and imported versions were consequently the same. I know for a fact that this is now true as to Alcohol content. Previously, Corona Extra and Tecate listed their domestic beer at "less than 6 % Alcohol". The new bottles in BOTH the U.S. and Mexico list them at 4.5 %.

As to quality, my " Amigo Aleman" flatly states that Tecate HAS to be the BEST. Why ? The brewery was started by an immigrant German Brewmeister.

Myself, I usually BUY Corona Extra, BUT, as I stated elsewhere, I drink and enjoy them all.

JZ - 6-10-2005 at 11:03 PM

Only one choice Don Julio!

si! Don Julio tambien,

capt. mike - 6-11-2005 at 06:00 AM

but have you tried Sauza Galardon? i'm telling you - it is, well was, incredible. it was a limited release and no more around un less old stock. The last bottle i know of it is in Boston believe it or not and MASS laws prevent them from shipping it to me. i tried.

whats the price range...

eetdrt88 - 6-11-2005 at 10:25 AM

on that Don Julio???? i know that the best bang for my buck is Cazadores...which is only around 30$ a bottle and goes down very nice:smug:

I'm in the mood...

eetdrt88 - 6-11-2005 at 10:27 AM

are you ready???(song lyrics i stole from Sublime):yes:

gonetobaja - 6-11-2005 at 10:38 AM

this thread reminds me of a typical baja beach party. First it started with "what kind of beer do you enjoy?" and has slowly degraded(or upgraded) to tequila shots and slurred speach. I think I passed out after captain George had me drink another round last night and then woke up today hungover. I would have lit of the mandatory M1000 rocket to wake up the kids in the tent but then realized after stubbing my toe on asphalt that I wasnt in baja.

All I need now is a box of sand to stick my toes in and Im almost there.....

JZ - 6-11-2005 at 01:23 PM

Great post, funny and true.

beer

cardonhugger - 6-11-2005 at 06:14 PM

I still lament the demise of those little dark "hand grenades" in a bottle: Modelo ???? We used to call them "fist kegs"!!!
And I must say... a fine medium brew. Probably why I now go exclusively for Modelo Especial in cans. Less weight and no rattling around off-road; just add a little slice( yeh, I know, real men don't put Fruit in their beer!!!) and they go down just fine around Cerveza y media pm. Also , what happenned to Superior in a bottle? It was a fine headache on many an afternoon!:barf:

Squat Brown Bottles

MrBillM - 6-11-2005 at 09:31 PM

Back in the late 60s and 70s South of San Felipe, the only beer anybody seemed to have were these short brown bottles of Corona. It was fairly skunky, but better than nothing. I remember stopping at one small cantina out in the middle of nowhere on the road to Gonzaga where they had no refrigeration, but kept the beer in a well out back. Cool, not cold, but still OK.

Al G - 6-11-2005 at 11:13 PM

I am one of the two people who voted "other".
My Baja beer is Indio. It's not imported so I drink PACIF- HIC - ICO here.
Tequila? There are many good ones and I am still trying new ones.
The best without a doubt is Real Hacienda.

dono - 6-12-2005 at 05:31 AM

I voted for Pacifico but since iam so chubby i have taken to drinking Modelo Light and i really like it:P

Don Jorge - 6-12-2005 at 06:23 AM

I remember the old tinny Tecate taste.

Sometimes, when I can't get to Baja because of work and family obligations like at this moment, I go into my seed room and pull out a few Tecates I keep stored there at room temp.

I sip those lousy, luke- cool Tecates, and it reminds me of there while I am here. My garden helps too.

meme - 6-12-2005 at 08:44 AM

To be perfectly HONEST! Some of US Chubbies have switched to Tecate Lite! After ALL we live in Baja , so it's readily available MUCH of the time!
Cervasa Time seems to come up far more often here!!:tumble::tumble:

well we just had....

eetdrt88 - 6-12-2005 at 03:27 PM

a little sunday taco grind at the festival where we work and of course it was accompanied by some cold tecate's....nothing like Nacho's carne asada tacos and cold tecate.....mmmmm;D;D

Paulina - 6-12-2005 at 10:54 PM

Gracie's vote...

David K - 6-13-2005 at 12:17 AM

Paulina, is that wall at your pizza place near Morro Bay?

Paulina - 6-13-2005 at 12:32 AM

Yep, that's our front porch. Gracie goes to work with us daily, weather permitting. She is quite the surf bird now a days.

Paulina - 6-13-2005 at 12:35 AM

My second favorite. Jimmy Smith told me that that the Tecate can is the state flower of Baja. I wonder if he knew that it also grew on trees?

[Edited on 13-6-2005 by Paulina]

Tecate in bottles for general consumption

Hook - 6-13-2005 at 11:26 AM

and Negra Modelo or Bohemia with beef based meals. I subscribe to the theory that beer (like wine) should be matched to the type of food you're eating.

I also think the Tecate that is exported to, at least, California is different than the Baja variety. Cans are a last resort or a practicality based on storage. Isn't CA a 3.2 state?

BTW, one of the biggies in brewing has re-introduced the Mexicali brand. I even saw the Mexicali girls at Palapa Jose's in La Mision a few months back. Could not remember if it tasted the same as the old Mexicali from the 60s. Of course, there's a lotta things I cant remember from the 60s........which is a sign that I was there.

Interesting....very few admitting to drinking Corona, even though it is by far the largest selling Mexican beer. I guess Nomads are a discerning bunch.

My favorite beer right now is Imperial......I just got back from Costa Rica last night.

how about the Corona...

eetdrt88 - 6-13-2005 at 09:28 PM

in the big ballena bottles down in Baja, tastes nothing like the corona beer up here....which btw has to be the lightest tasting beer that is available here, which also might explain its extreme popularity in so. cal.....a place where really fake people like to drink really fake beer:lol::lol::O:lol::lol:

David K - 6-13-2005 at 10:06 PM

It is funny, but back in 1977, we really liked Corona (in Baja)... I can't hardy stand it today... Has Corona gone down hill or has my beer taste buds improved???

The Pacificos we were swigging last Saturday in Ensenada were just sooooo very fine! That evening we had Dos Equis... and it was a let down... when I usually really enjoy XX... ??? Is it what you eat, where you are, or just the time of the month??:lol::?::lol::D

N.A. beer

jerry - 6-14-2005 at 06:25 AM

is there any non-alcohal beers in baja?? if so what brand?? any in loreto?? have a good one jerry

mysandybay - 6-14-2005 at 08:25 AM

Pacifico is our favorite as long as it is cold. We have been to Mazatlan, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta but never to northern Baja. Soon when we buy a new 5th wheel.

Any cold beer will do for a thirsty Canadian on a mission and beer run.

Next time I go I will get the name.

Oso - 6-14-2005 at 05:52 PM

A few years ago, I was on the wagon for a few years and used to take cases of O'Douls with me because I knew the concept would be extra-terrestial in Mexico. I remember a Blackshirt hittiing me up for one at Maneadero- Sure, I told him, but you won't like it.

Then, about 4 years ago, I reported on the Amigos board about the Paraiso del Desierto in Rocky Point. It supposedly had secure parking (hah). I had an open bed pickup and left the cooler in the back overnight. The next day, I opened it and two 12 packs of O'Douls were gone. My satisfaction came from imagining the thieves sitting around, swilling can after can, waiting for a buzz.
