Baja Rosario Festival 2006...!!!

BajaCactus - 5-8-2006 at 10:15 PM

Hello my friends...

It is my pleasure to invite all of you to the Baja Rosario Festival 2006, which will take place in a couple of months... on july 21st, 22nd and 23rd (friday, saturday and sunday).

Last year we had a blast... our dear friend Connie Ellig wrote a wonderful review, you can see it at: http://www.ensenadagazette.com/rosfest05review.html

Thank you so much for coming to El Rosario last year...!!!

This year we plan to enhance last year activities... among other things, we expect much better shows at the "Jaripeos" and a lot more antiques at the "Art and History Expo".

Remember that El Rosario is only 4 1/2 hours south of the border.

Also, I would like to organize a special activity or treat for any nomads who come to the Festival.... so, let me know who is coming and I will put up something great...!!!

For any further info on the festival, you can e-mail at festival@bajacactus.com

For any other info, I am always available at info@bajacactus.com

Hope to see you soon my friends...!!!

Hey Antonio! Count us in! We can't wait for the festival. Check your u2u. Last year's festival was so good, I can't imagine missing this years!

Bob H - 5-9-2006 at 02:30 PM

We did have a GREAT time last year. For a first year annual event I would have to rate it very high. I surely hope Audrey can get her schedule set up so we can go again this year. We would plan to still camp at the full hookups behind (what's the name of that motel again David?)
Looking forward to the new schedule of events and offroad plans too!

This sounds fab and we happen to be in Baja at that time! Would love to join everyone but we need some tips -- no RV here so we need a room. And is this a "dog-friendly" event or should we leave them at home with the dog sitter? I did google El Rosario earlier today to see where it was (not far from us!) and ended up at what I think was the Bajaexpo site...looking at El Rosario, clicked on the link to Espinoza's (maybe Mama Espinoza) who had recently built some small casitas or something for lodging (oh, and my Z could most probably be an S -- and well -Norton Anti Virus went crazy and found all kinds of things -- trojans, hackers, etc - so beware of that our fellow Nomads! But, please, tell us how and where to book a room, and we would not be that reluctant to leave the canines behind for a couple days!

MexicoTed - 5-9-2006 at 07:33 PM

BB2005, check out our directory that goes with Baja Talk Radio. You can contact the hotels directly, but Antonio's Baja Cactus is the best. Contact him direct. I hope it's OK Doug to post this?

Baja Cactus Motel is the #1 place... http://www.bajacactus.com (for contact info.) Photos posted here on Nomad of the motel and rooms (fabulous with primo mattresses in the NEW rooms).

Mama Espinoza's Las Caba?as Motel and The Motel Sinahi are the other two in town. Then there is 'Baja's Best' Bed & Breakfast on the far end of town. An RV Park is behind the Sinahi Motel.

Lodging...

BajaCactus - 5-9-2006 at 11:42 PM

Hi guys,

Thank you for your enthusiasm... that is what makes all the effort worth it.

And thanks David and Ted for the nice words.

Regarding Lodging and/or RV Park spaces... I can help you to get reservations on any of the four places in town (BajaCactus, Las Cabanas, Sinahi or Bed and Breakfast)... or if your prefer you can do it yourself.

I will get the four phone numbers and post them here.

Any other other questions you may post them here or e-mail at festival@bajacactus.com

Just a reminder to bring some kids clothes, school supplies and anything else you can think for Mama Es orphanage. So pack your cars and trucks up! Twin sheets for the bunk beds, pillow cases, blankets, stuffed teddy bears, diapers, bottles, sippey cups, paint sets, ect. Let's show them the heart this nomad group has! See you there!

Yeah, that's the place to camp, with full hookups. And, the restaurant there is fantastic! Many Nomads had dinner there and really enjoyed it.
But for a motel room, I would recommend Baja Cactus first.

This is one place where the camping is done during the festival, or anytime you want to beach camp near El Rosario... This is La Bocana Beach, about 5 miles from Hwy. 1.

This is another... La Lobera, 6 miles north of El Rosario and 3 miles west:

For an established campground, go north about 20 miles to El Pabellon or Gypsy's/ Cielito Lindo.

I posted this in the Nomad Trip Reports Forum last February...

>>> My only quest this day was to do a road log from El Rosario out to La Bocana Beach via the 2WD 'HIGH' road and the 4WD 'VALLEY' road.

=============================================================

EL ROSARIO TO LA BOCANA BEACH (High Road):

0.0 Turn right off Hwy. 1 at the sharp left curve (by Espinoza's)... Continue straight passing the left turn to El Roasrio de Abajo/ Punta Baja/ and Valley Road to La Bocana.

0.8 Fork, go right.

1.2 Fork/ Road curves right, uphill (road left soon ends).

1.5 Palapas and Banana Trees on left. Road climbs uphill.

2.2 High Point (view of La Bocana)

2.6 Fork, lesser road left down arroyo. Go straight ahead.

2.9 Fork, go left. Road right to closed gate.

3.0 Fork, right to Diamante Del Mar security gate, go left.

3.6 Road to right, better road bends left for La Bocana.

3.9 Fork, go to right.

5.3 LA BOCANA BEACH

============================================================

EL ROSARIO TO LA BOCANA BEACH (Valley Road/ 4WD):

0.0 Turn Right off Hwy. 1 at the sharp left curve. In about 100 yards take the left (south) fork... signed for Punta Baja.

Cross over the El Rosario River culvert and follow main road as it turns right (west) and crosses some water before reaching the south bank and entering the town of El Rosario de Abajo.

1.5 El Rosario Museum on left (Open Mon.-Fri. 9-6, Sat., Sun. 10-3) Photos inside at http://vivabaja.com/505/page6.html

1.6 Rosario de Abajo mission ruins on right

2.5 Road left for Punta San Antonio and coast south of Punta Baja.

2.9 Road left for Punta Baja... Continue ahead (west) for La Bocana.

3.1 Turn right/ north for La Bocana... ahead to rancho. Deep water crossing soon.

4.2 Come to fence, turn left to opening then continue west. Deep sand section ahead.

5.1 LA BOCANA BEACH

========================================================

I was surprised that the distance from Hwy. 1 was almost identicle for both routes. The high road being far easier to drive <<<

Here's a beach photo taken then...

Hey DK have anything in mind for this weekend( El Rosario festival )like a road trip maybe if you do it's santa maria mission in your plans?

I say go to LAS PINTAS for a side trip !!!

David K - 5-29-2006 at 04:47 PM

Yah, Las Pintas is a great place to explore... See http://vivabaja.com/pintas

BajaCat, if I lead a day tour, such as I did for Nomads last year... I would pick Las Pintas... Of course with the details I provide on my web pages... you don't need me to take you there!

I enjoy going to places with fellow Baja nuts, however!

Well thanks... But, even if I am not there, you and other Nomads should attend... The town gets really into this event. Last year's was the first and Antonio (BajaCactus) is really respected for all he did to make it happen.

you're NOT going???

David K - 5-31-2006 at 05:49 PM

Relax folks... I always prefer to be in Baja!

However, I am still a single father of two teenagers and have my own irrigation business... both of which might cause me not to able to go... You might think Baja is my entire life... Sad but not totally true!

BAJACAT - 6-1-2006 at 08:09 PM

What a shame I hope you can make it

bajaandy - 6-21-2006 at 07:28 AM

Haven't heard much lately about the festival. Anybody else planning on going?

Some of the people I'm going with are planning a beach day at a little beach south of Punta Baja. U2U me if you're interested and I'll give the general location. We're thinking B-B-Q on the beach, campfire, etc.

Debra - 6-21-2006 at 05:13 PM

I'm with you Diver! Too bad we couldn't carpool, saves on the gas, and more importantly, having someone to help DRIVE UGH!

The dates of the festival are more within the realm of possibilty this year though........:light:

We intend on attending!

David K - 6-23-2006 at 08:19 AM

Okay gang, only a month away... Remember last year's was a blast!

Antonio ('BajaCactus') called me last night and said all the same events will be repeated. The art exhibit will be larger and managed by Kim Williams of The Trading Post gift shop (maps and fossils) located 2 miles from the town center. Hugo Lopez will have all his available art on site, as well.

Antonio will be posting from El Rosario in the next few days to provide us with updates...

Like last year, he will be hosting a special party for Baja Nomads... this means good food like crab and carne asada!

I have been asked to take anyone interested to Las Pintas Fossil & Petroglyph grotto Saturday morning. The Baja Nomad meal will be when we return Saturday afternoon. 4WD is not needed, but no low slung vehicles for the trip.
Las Pintas details: http://vivabaja.com/pintas

Although all of the new rooms at Baja Cactus are now booked for the event, Antonio still has the older rooms plus Mama Espinoza's Las Caba?as Motel and The Sinahi Motel have basic rooms. The Sinahi also has its RV Park and there is dry camping at La Bocana beach, 5 miles west of town. There also is Ed Lusk's Baja's Best Bed & Breakfast at the far east edge of town.

To reserve a room at any of the motels: festival@bajacactus.com

Be there or be square!:light::cool:

BajaGeoff - 6-23-2006 at 10:32 AM

Hey David,

I saw the driving directions and pictures....thanks! Have you ever camped out at the beach during the festival? Is it fairly crowded or secluded?

bajaandy - 6-23-2006 at 02:03 PM

Looks like we'll be doing the Thursday through Monday thing again this year too.

Since DK and John have trips planned for Sat., maybe we'll do the beach thing on Friday afternoon.... get a surf and then light the b-b-q, or just roast some hot-dogs over the fire.

I don't want to miss the Jaripero (sp?) this year. Last year that was the highlight of our trip!

David K - 6-23-2006 at 08:08 PM

Yes John, cactus forests, the Vibora Grade and El Sauzalito copper mine ruins was last year's festival 4WD tour... See http://vivabaja.com/705

Nice to have options...

Hi Geoff, no I was lucky to have a room at Baja Cactus to take a break from camping. This is the second festival for El Rosario... Last year I believe Surfer Jim, Hook and Neal Johns camped at La Bocana at least one night. It is pretty big, so crowding is not an issue, I wouldn't think.

Neal Johns - 6-24-2006 at 05:45 PM

BajaGeoff, there were only three or four vehicles there last year - room for many more.

La Cuesta la Vibora potential tour

John M - 6-25-2006 at 05:48 AM

Temporarily I am putting this "tour" idea during the El Rosario Festival on hold.....

Leaving town for a week and when I return I will decide whether or not to work out necessary details......

Guess I got a little too excited and jumped the gun.

[Edited on 6-25-2006 by John M]

David K - 6-25-2006 at 09:59 AM

There are a BUNCH of day trip tour possiblities from El Rosario!!!

Just look at the Nomad Baja Trip Reports Forum or my web site to see all the places I have visited in the past since Antonio has invited us to El Rosario!

Antonio asked me to lead another tour for next mont's festival and Surfer Jim requested Las Pintas for this years tour, and I agree that is a great choice.

However, with so many things to see near El Rosario, having John M lead another group of those not interested in Las Pintas or seeking a 4WD trail (Baja Ken, you there?) would be great.

surfer jim - 6-25-2006 at 11:15 AM

The bad news now is there is also the CORR races in San Diego the same weekend....I missed the last race because of BAJA 500 pre-run.....not to mention the MORE race closer to home.....same weekend !!!....

I need a clone (or two).....

Baja Rosario Festival details in Ensenada Gazette... Have a look: http://www.ensenadagazette.com/rosariofest06.html incl. photos)... Here's the text only:

Baja Rosario Festival 2006
text by connie ellig; photos by david hopps & connie ellig
From July 21-23, the town of El Rosario will host Baja Rosario Festival 2006, a celebration of the founding of the first Dominican mission, Nuestra Se?ora del Rosario de Vi?adaco, by Friar Vicente Mora in July of 1774. The three-day event will feature an assortment of cultural, historical, recreational, sporting and family-style activities that start on Friday afternoon and continue through Sunday night. Last year?s festival, the first of its kind in El Rosario, was a remarkable success that involved the participation of the entire town and attracted visitors from San Quint?n, Ensenada, Tijuana, and northern and southern California.
El Rosario is a tranquil fishing and agricultural town in a wide valley located approximately 150 miles south of Ensenada. Even as early as 1855 with only 25 reported inhabitants, El Rosario had become a comfortable resting place with good food and water for travelers who continuously traversed the Baja peninsula from north to south. Before the completion of the paved Transpeninsular Highway linking Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas in 1973, El Rosario was considered the last outpost of civilization in the north. It was here that intrepid wayfarers would stop for gasoline, a report on road conditions, and a bite to eat before they continued their journey further south through the central desert on the grueling dirt road. With its well-deserved reputation for excellent hospitality, El Rosario has played an important role in the history and development of the Baja California peninsula.

El Rosario will continue its tradition of hospitality at Baja Rosario Festival 2006, which will offer history and art expositions, regional foods, rodeos, horse races, a livestock exhibition, carnival rides, guided tours, storytelling around a bonfire, a beauty pageant and nightly fiestas with live norte?o music by Grupo Implacable and the DJ sound of Tijuana?s Disco Hall. One of the highlights is the ?Se?orita Rosario 2006? beauty pageant at the Saturday night fiesta and dance where a half dozen local young ladies from ages 17-23 will vie for the coveted crown and the opportunity to reign over the festival. The winner will receive dinners, clothing and other gifts donated by local businesses as well as an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas, courtesy of Baja Cactus Motel. Last year the venue was filled to near capacity as more than 700 people of all ages and occupations turned out to party and root enthusiastically for their favorite candidates.

Several guided tours will be offered for those who want to explore El Rosario?s natural and historical sites. One is to La Lobera sea lion habitat; another is to the Petrified Forest; the other includes the two Nuestra Se?ora del Rosario de Vi?adaco mission sites, the community museum and the old cemetery. Visitors can hop aboard tour vans ($2dlls. fee per person) that stop at the town?s three motels at designated departure times or caravan in their own vehicle (4x4 is not needed). Event programs with scheduled tours and maps will be available at motels and throughout El Rosario on the weekend of the festival.

Once again the Baja Rosario Festival organizing committee, headed by Antonio Mu?oz, owner of Motel Baja Cactus, has planned a superb program of activities, many of which are free or have a minimal admission charge. For exhibitor information or camping, RV or room reservations at any of El Rosario?s three motels (Baja Cactus, Espinoza?s La Caba?a, Sinahi), contact Antonio Mu?oz, El Rosario tel. (616)165-8850, U.S. cell tel. 619-664-3585, or e-mail For additional general information, contact David Kier, e-mail

Come and celebrate El Rosario?s remarkable past and the new dawn of its future at Baja Rosario Festival 2006!

How about all Nomads thinking of going to post here?

Less than 3 weeks away...

BajaNomad - 7-4-2006 at 07:07 PM

If you're looking for confirmation - Michelle and I - along with the three boys (this time) will be there. Jonathan will be with us, Nichole will likely not join us this year. Looks to be (for us) Friday night arrival (earlier if possible), and we'll need to leave sometime Sunday a.m.

We really enjoyed the event, town & people last year, and look forward forward to the weekend in El Rosario again this year.

:smug:

I look forward to meeting any Nomads in attendance there this year. Please make a point of saying hello to us if you're there.

How will we know you ??
Might you be wearing a BajaNomad T-shirt or hat ???

Bajame - 7-5-2006 at 06:56 PM

My white Suv has Baja stickers all over the back of it. My Son is such a great cook that now I need to spend a few months in Baja to drop the pounds that befriended me lately. Hey let's pick up those name stickers so we can find the new comers and they can find us ! :bounce:

If anyone needs a 'got baja?' sticker to ID themselves as a Nomad, they are free... just email me at 'info AT vivabaja.com' and put got baja? in the subject line!

Hey!!!

BajaCactus - 7-5-2006 at 11:12 PM

Hi guys....

I will be there too!!!!.....:lol::lol::lol:

Sorry for not posting earlier... I have been busy making improvements at the BajaCactus Motel and working to make the Baja Rosario Festival 2006 even better than last year.

Two weeks ago we had our kick-off with a local dance and party, where we presented the candidates for the "Senorita Rosario 2006" contest to the town.

This past couple of weeks we have been preparing the promotional printouts for the Festival... along with T-shirts, cups, stickers, and other stuff..

Last year Cindyrough offered to help sending t-shirts over mail, but I was unable to give appropiate support for it... this year... we already have the T-shirts... if anyone is not attending and would like one, I will be happy to send them over mail.

The costs for T-shirts is only $10 dlls... all profits will go to build a nice welcome entrance at the north end of town.

On the other hand, our dear friend Connie Ellig, helped us covering our story at the Baja Times, which appeared in the past 1st of july edition.

You may see it at http://www.bajatimes.com/art14.html or also at the Ensenada Gazzette website:

http://www.ensenadagazette.com and http://www.ensenadagazette.com/rosariofest06.html

We are also expecting to have a bigger and nicer "Art and History Expo", since a lot of the locals families are more excited this year. Also, our local american friend Kim is setting up this expo... and she is GOOD in doing this kind of stuff.

For all our BajaNomad friends... after the side trip which will be lead by our own DavidK... BajaCactus will offer a meal at the BajaCactus Motel... all other nomads camping or with RV's... please join us... it will be a GREAT get together.

What woud you say David.... around 3:00pm... 4:00 pm?.

Doug.... what about a special edition of the T-shirts ONLY for BajaNomad members?... any ideas guys?

I will keep in touch guys...

:bounce::bounce::bounce:

David K - 7-6-2006 at 08:24 AM

Wonderful ideas there Antonio!

4 pm for the Nomad meal, so plenty of time for us to get back from Las Pintas or any other desert outing, plus it will be cooler at 4 than 3 (even though it is never too hot in El Rosario being just 5 miles from the ocean)!

Keep up the great work that you do (don't know how you manage all of it?)!

I plan on taking off Friday morning, so we will arrive much sooner than we did last year.

Camping options

Hook - 7-10-2006 at 02:45 PM

It was actually pretty nice splitting up the camping options between La Bocana and the RV area behind Motel Sinai. If I was coming this year, I'd do both.Saturday night would be the good in-town night.

But I will be on the Kern River that weekend.....literally!

eetdrt88 - 7-11-2006 at 09:57 AM

definitely gonna try to get down there for a day or two if I can get the time off... would love to hook up with other nomads who are camping at the beach:yes::yes:

Neal Johns - 7-11-2006 at 03:41 PM

I will not be there.:(

My current wife has geezernapped me to attend her family reunion in WA the same date.

John M is getting me a Tee Shirt, however. Good Dog!

David K - 7-11-2006 at 06:56 PM

I would like to know who (besides Surfer Jim) wants to join in the caravan to Las Pintas Saturday morning???

John M also offered to lead a caravan into the desert beyond the La Vibora grade... great cactus gardens!

Las Pintas photos and details: http://vivabaja.com/pintas

I have good detailed directions in that site if only a couple folks are interested, and I relax in El Rosario instead...

Going with several other Nomads is fun... we have a good time in the Baja desert!

Last years' Baja Nomad caravan (9 vehicles) looked like this: http://vivabaja.com/705

Looking forward to the El Rosario Festival! Sounds like it's going to be fun.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we will be going to the beach on Friday in case anyone wants to join us. (But not La Bocana beach... a different beach south of Punta Baja. U2U me if you want to know where.)

Also, I am planning to do a little fishing on Friday or Saturday morning, hopefully with some of the local fisherman. If anyone is interested in getting in on that, U2U me and we will see if we can set something up.

Okay Jim... maybe I will get to hang around town Saturday morning then, as nobody has posted a desire this year...

Eat, drink, and be merry!
