Bruce R Leech - 12-24-2006 at 07:10 PM

I don't think they were exempt. I think I would have done the same thing if it were me.

Sharksbaja - 12-24-2006 at 09:10 PM

Makes sense to me. Well, I guess Saul will need that new restaurant he's building.

DON'T EVEN THINK RAY DID THIS- get real!!!

CasaManzana - 12-24-2006 at 09:21 PM

Ray had an agreeement to keep his restaurant there as an attraction for the new owners plan...at least for the short run. Any idea that he - Ray- would do this is PURE BULLchit. Get real!!! No drama needed here please

Posada-BushPilot - 12-24-2006 at 09:46 PM

Sorry Bruce, Think I must agree with Manzanas.

You may owe Ray an apology. Gotta feel some empathy for a guy who has evidently lost his livelyhood. I mean it is Christmas eve.

Ray: If you want to rebuild, I'm sure half of Posada would support you all the way. Even us "Leisure World" folks still know how to swing a hammer.

Bruce I can't believe you would even HINT such a thing as you tried to sell your cambio when you knew a bank was going to move to Mulege

Casa

Sharksbaja - 12-24-2006 at 10:11 PM

I wasn't suggesting he did anything. Just that if it was torched it was most likely related to the land deal. Just gotta wonder.:?:

Bruce R Leech - 12-25-2006 at 12:12 AM

I did not say he did I just sed I would have if it were me. come on you people get a life are you so board on Christmas eve that you want to fight .

marry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

capt. mike - 12-25-2006 at 07:35 AM

man!!!! this sucks!!
Bob - is he going to concentrate on the B and B he's building west of town?

oldhippie - 12-25-2006 at 08:26 AM

Bummer. I've been to Ray's Place many times. One time I bought a baseball cap with the restaurant's name on the front and every time I wear it I think about my baja trips.

What's the eviction/land deal you folks are apeaking about? Don't tell me The Donald is building there too!

What's going to happen to one of my favorite over night / couple days stops?

Ray has been working on his new restaurant at his ranch for some time I don't know when he is going to open it. I hope it will be soon

A pity about Ray's Place..

Summanus - 12-25-2006 at 09:42 AM

Ray's Place at Santispac will be missed as a popular watering-hole and eatery.

Ray's Mulege valley business has already received guests - a couple of caravans drove out there some time back. As far as I know, it is open now. It is called....?... something with a Hemmingway flair... from Ray's being a Cuban expat and Hemmingway's history in Cuba.

Before?

John M - 12-25-2006 at 04:18 PM

For those of us not familiar, is there a "before" photo available?

the loss of rays is only the building
it is the loss of an era at satispac but...

Ray really MAKES the place and no one was hurt...
He'll be back...somewhere:saint:

Guess I'll have to tell Ray's ex about this. I'm sure she will be just devastated.

Bajagypsy - 12-26-2006 at 08:02 AM

Bummer...We've had many great meals at Ray's. Sorry to hear this bad news. His place was always on our list of must stop spots while we vacation.

Phil S - 12-26-2006 at 08:39 AM

Several years ago, Wendy & I stopped at Ray's on the way south for the winter. this was our first visit. We ordered coconut butterflied shrimp. Best we had ever eaten. He came over & introduced himself, and told us about getting honored with an award from some national eating magazine. Anyone know the story?????? Then again on the way this winter to Loreto we stopped for dinner, and shared it with many of the Baja 1000 drivers/riders. Fun time. Ordered same thing. And was a delicious as the other time. WE will miss this restaurant/bar on our trips north & south.

capt. mike - 12-27-2006 at 05:26 AM

in all the years, never saw ray without a cap. wow, he's a bit receded!

love the guy - cuban national, fluent english w/ american accent, spanish when he needs to talk locally.

hope he comes back.

Bruce R Leech - 12-27-2006 at 08:05 AM

bajarich - 12-28-2006 at 09:56 PM

jettygirl - 12-29-2006 at 02:25 PM

Oh no ...... :o:o
Should any of you locals run into Ray, give him a big hug from me.
Was planning on seeing him in a few weeks and was really looking forward to his oysters
and margies !!!
Does anyone know if the mural in the kitchen survived?
What a place and what a guy.
Hope he fairs well in his new place.
Anyone with info on where and when the new place might be up and running please update ..please please please.

Summanus - 12-29-2006 at 02:50 PM

jettygirl...read the previous posts on this thread. Ray opened a new B&B business in the Mulege valley some time ago. The name of it is Hemmingway-related. It's about 6 miles of washboard road to get there on the ice-house road. Hope that helps your quest.

jettygirl - 12-29-2006 at 05:57 PM

It does indeed Summanus.
Many thanks !!!

Baja Bernie - 12-30-2006 at 10:36 AM

I don't know Ray and have never seen his place but from what you folks are saying he is one of those people who make Baja such a fantastic place.......It is the people not the places that make such a difference.

If I ever do another book on Baja it will have a Cuban ex-pat and a grass hut in it somewhere.

Hope someone shows him copies of your posts............even Bruce's because if he is a Baja guy he will appreciate that comment..............that is life in Baja!...even more so than Chicago.
