Mexico Event in San Diego

MexicoTed - 11-9-2009 at 12:42 AM

Greetings,

I know some might consider this a unwarranted or shameless plug, but I think it's a great opportunity for Nomads to get together. Plus Nomads get in free, just tell them at the door.

Anyway, I wanted to make sure all local nomads knew that this Saturday is The Mexico Promotional Event in San Diego. It will be held at Liberty Station in Point Loma from 10:30am-4pm.

I think we have some speakers and presentations that some Nomads might be interested in. They include Sr. Escobedo, the Secretary of Tourism - Baja California, the premiere of the TV pilot "Baja Sol", tequila maker Guillermo Sauza will speak and offer tastings, plus real estate developments Mexico is Hot and Cabo Riviera.

Also, we'll be giving away round trip tickets on AeroMexico, some hotel packages, books, and local tequila restaurant will giveaway a dinner package as well as set up a replica of a Mexican cantina... They may also offer samplings of their famous mole.

You can see more information and directions on our website at http://www.themexicoevent.com

-On a side note, did any Nomads see our ads on the electronic billboards at the border? Curious as I wasn't able to make it across.

Thanks,
Ted

alafrontera - 11-9-2009 at 01:58 AM

OK cool, I'll come and check you out

capt. mike - 11-9-2009 at 08:47 AM

what's the TV show about? a pilot?? is it trying to get to a series?

tell us Ted!!
is baja talk radio back on??

shari - 11-9-2009 at 09:03 AM

thanks for the info ted....these kind of events are great and I think its terrific you tell nomads about them...hopefully some of you might win one of those prizes...have a tequila test for me!

Udo - 11-9-2009 at 09:13 AM

With tequila as a draw...we're there!

MexicoTed - 11-9-2009 at 11:40 AM

Thanks all, just let the person at the door know you are a Baja Nomad. Then fill out the form to enter the round trip tickets for AeroMexico and other prizes.

Cap't. Mike, how are you amigo? Yes, film maker Mike Norman has created a potential TV series all about Baja California. His pilot is out and we will run it at 11:15 I believe. I have seen some of it and it's very professional and the host is great. He's also looking for advertisers to make the whole 26 part series.

Lastly, Udo and others, I look forward to meeting you so if we haven't meet, please have someone point me out. I am sure I will be running around like crazy putting out fires, but please say hi.

See you all there!
Ted

Mike Norman ('BajaSol' on Nomad) is a really great guy who has made a very professional video that shows the peninsula well. I have seen the video...

The video is great and combines many of the things we love about Baja. The first episode (also) goes into detail on the great relationship and fun that the people of Baja California have with SCORE and off road racing! Capt. Mike, you will love it!

Bajahowodd - 11-9-2009 at 12:50 PM

Wow. Looks like a large number of exhibitors. And I would never have thought there would be a Troncones Tourism Office.

BajaGeoff - 11-9-2009 at 02:07 PM

Mike Norman has done a lot of amazing work to get the Baja Sol project going. I had lunch with Mike last week and got to hear some of his plans for the show. It is going to be really good!

Baja Bound will also have a booth this weekend...come on by and say hello!

Just wondering about copyright stuff. Check out this link. Then click on the Baja Radio/TV button.

THAT IS NOT the same 'BajaSol' as our Nomad TV show maker... One look and you can see that web site is a restaurant chain...

Here is Mexico Ted and BajaSol with me at the big Baja by the Sea event last May:

Yes, that is hard to believe, but I haven't been down there for awhile. They've probably paved the road by now.

Bajahowodd - 11-9-2009 at 04:55 PM

David. Don't be so simple. Whether or not you think that there's no problem because that link was to a restaurant chain, there seriously could be copyright infringement and other legal issues. That's why I posted it. That said, that "Baja" restaurant chain founded in the twin cities has also entered an agreement with a group in SoCal to open up to 30 franchise locations in San Diego and Orange Counties, the first slated in Chula Vista. What's wrong with this picture? A Minneapolis based operation, claiming to be "Baja" expanding to Baja Norte Norte.

MexicoTed - 11-9-2009 at 05:01 PM

Unfortunately, we don't have a beer sponsorship for this event... but we do have one of the finest boutique tequilas available; Tequila Fortaleza. They will have a booth shared with Cantina Mayahuel restaurant set up to look like an authentic Mexican cantina plus offering small tastings....

Sorry, I forgot to mention you Geoff. BajaBound (and for that matter Doug) have been big promoters of our events.

See you there,
Ted

Bajahowodd - 11-9-2009 at 05:09 PM

Just the opposite, David. not trying to hurt. Trying to help. You obviously have no background in legal stuff. I was merely trying to give our friends a heads-up that they could possibly face some lawyers knocking at their door. This stuff happens, unfortunately, all too often.

Glad to Know About These Events

Thanks, MexicoTed

I passed the info along.

I hope that the event is a great success!

While your general concern with this is appreciated, throwing "digs" at others here (per the above quote) is not likely in your best interest.

There seems to be, as well, a slight confusion as to what are "copyright", and what are "trademark" issues. Same/similar brands would be a trademark issue, not a copyright issue.

And it's not a trademark issue if there's not likely any confusion over the source of the products or services - and these are not same or similar items being marketed.

End of story. Lets move on..... maybe to Ted's event on Saturday perhaps? :light:

Udo - 11-15-2009 at 12:33 PM

WE ATTENDED…WE ENJOYED!

MexicoTed deserves a “well done” for the help he provided in the presentation of this Mexico Expo. Unlike the last Expo in Seaport Village on San Diego bay, this Expo was more related to Mexico in general. However, there were many Baja resorts offering discounts as well as free margaritas when one attended their establishment.
Jana, my son, as well as myself were pleasantly surprised of the showing of many mainland hotels, resorts and tours. I had no idea that there was train travel available throughout much of the mainland.
Vehicle insurers were prominent with some front row booths and were busy fielding questions from attendees.
Baja Sol showed a shortened version of their latest video of Baja. It really showed a heavy hand in professional TV production. The editing was superb and can’t wait to see the full length series on TV.
Baja’s Secretary of Tourism, Oscar Escobedo Carignan, offered some glimpses into the future of Baja. His charm and eloquism should keep him elected in that position for years to come.
The most prominent and playful booth was presented by Puerto Peñasco, on the north end of the mainland. There is now a pirate ship replica there, that offeres bay tours, food and beverages included. I had no idea that (Rocky Point) had escalated so much.

The event was held near a retail mall and convention center, and my feeling are that many of the shoppers would have attended this event if a Mariachi band would have been playing in the large outdoor courtyard.

The best legs of the Expo

Our friends from Discover Baja were busy promoting their services as well as the new BAJA ALMANAC

Mexico Ted accompanies us for a FORTALEZA TEQUILA tasting

My favorite sport in Baja! Holding tequila babies.

BajaWarrior - 11-15-2009 at 04:38 PM

We were there from about 12:30 to 1:15, I think I saw you Udo. We watched the presentation for Cabo Riviera, they have a long way to go and in my opinion, will be catering to the very wealthy only. That's just not me.

Yes, the booths represented mostly mainland destinations, deep mainland. I'm a Baja guy. I love Baja.

fdt - 11-15-2009 at 04:38 PM

Hey Udo, any pics of you with Mr. Secretary of Tourism?

Mexico is a huge country. There are so many places to visit. They obviously have been hurting from a combination of factors. Was just wondering as to where you may have visited other than Baja. I realize that this is a Baja-specific website, but that said, Baja has always been the bastard stepchild of Mexico, for many reasons, and because of that, it's culture remains distinctly different from much of Mexico.

I work full time as does my wife, and we still have school age children at home, traveling to the Mainland to a high end retreat or all inclusive resort is not on our list and that is what was being pushed at the Mexico event. Honestly, I just really like Baja, besides, it's literally right down the street from us and we have always targeted places that are tailored for a long weekend. We also travel to Canada once a year, that's pretty nice too.

But! One day, I will expand my horizons and travel EVERYWHERE in the world. Greece, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Carribean, like to see the Aztec ruins too.

I try to think and rethink, ponder, analize, wonder, imagine, figure out, look at your point of view, put myself in your shoes, among other things and all I can say is I am baffled by your assertion that Baja California is the bastard stepchild of México.
Could you please explain?

This is a very good restaurant. They have a good selection of Tequila's and are known for their Mole. Call ahead as they only serve Mole a couple of days per week.

They are at the corner of 30th and Adams in San Diego.

I am going to bet it is because until recent years, Baja California has been greatly ignored by Mexico City. Progress was slow to come... a highway wasn't completed until the end of 1973, etc.

When the Americans occupied the peninsula during the Mexican War, books mentioned many locals were looking forward to the change... When we decided to turn it back over to Mexico, many down there decided to come to Alta California fearing for their lives or wishing to become Americans.

A few years later, William Walker and his band of volunteers invaded the peninsula and set up a 'Republic of Lower California'... That failed when he tried to invade Sonora and add it as a second state to the republic. Baja California has been a distant frontier from the heart of Mexico.

Face it, Baja California is almost an island and being seperated from the mainland has created the isolation from D.F.

fdt - 11-16-2009 at 12:09 PM

Oh, thanks, sounds logical.

Bajahowodd - 11-16-2009 at 01:18 PM

I sent a U2U to Ferna explaining my thoughts. Basically, David nailed it. Even better than I did. Thanks. Obviously no disrepect intended. Just more of a historical perspective.

fdt - 11-16-2009 at 03:07 PM

got it.

David K - 11-16-2009 at 04:51 PM

Yah, it is all in the past... I mean we are pretty friendly with many of our former 'enemy' nations (Japan, Germany, Russia, Red China...)

I for one am very glad Mexico was allowed to keep Baja... Otherwise, one need only to look north of the border to see what the peninsula would be like... :O:no::rolleyes:

Bajahowodd - 11-16-2009 at 05:12 PM

Gawd. Can you imagine? Actually, Mexico didn't get to keep Baja. The US refused to take it! Score one for our team.

Bajahowodd - 11-16-2009 at 06:09 PM

And for the benefit of our friend Sr. Hook, most of what is present day Sonora was also in the offer. He could be living in AZ right now!:P

Udo - 11-16-2009 at 08:42 PM

FOR THE RECORD

I have to thank my good friend Fernando (FDT for you new Nomads), for politely correcting me about the tourism representative at he Expo. I stated that Oscar Escobedo Carignan attended, however, the person whom I spoke with was actually Ferando's good friend, Juan Saldaña. The mix-up came because of my lack of paying attention and my memory failing me.
Lo siento mucho, Fernando y Juan!
