Wild Baja -- Part Three to Las Animas

Fatboy - 5-21-2016 at 11:02 AM

I follow the dirt road back out of the Sierra Santa Clara's back to the pavement and then on to Highway 1.

From there it is almost 30 miles to Vizcaino where I fill up with WGT (Water, gas and tacos) before heading to the turn off for El Arco.

I make a wrong turn in El Arco and I am heading towards Santa Gertrudis so a quick you turn is in order. I do want to go there some day, though.

I stop at some old diggings and wander around a little bit.

I have a camp spot in mind a little south San Rafael but when I get there it is just too windy and exposed. All the birds are even hunkered down.

I figure I can make it to Las Animas before dark but it is going to be close.

When I get to the little lagoon but what do I see?

No, not a deer, a Badger!

O.K. now that is cool, again I have seen them before but not in Baja.

What are the bottom two photos showing?

Too bad you didn't use the short cut through Guillermo Prieto instead of going all the way through El Arco. It is in the 2009 Almanac, as well. Here I penciled in the north half the Auto Club didn't drive on. First time over it was in 2001... last time was in 2012. Great road.
