Restaurant Las Cabañas adds meat dishes

BajaBlanca - 6-1-2018 at 12:38 PM

The Las Cabañas restaurant, which is open from 8 am to 10 pm, 365 days a year with breakfast -lunch - and dinner offered, has just added meat options besides hamburger to the menu.

We haven't tried it yet but will soon. Just wanted those who regularly visit us to see what is new on the menu. The prices seem kind of juicy, we will see how this pans out.

"Restaurant Las Cabañas" or Rancho El 17 or Cortes Rancho El 17?

caj13 - 6-1-2018 at 02:55 PM

Is this the place right on the beach in La Bocana?

I can tell you i was not particularlyy impressed by their hamburger when i was there this spring - and their chicken wings were absolutely terrible! had some good food while i was in La Bocana, just not here!

BajaBlanca - 6-1-2018 at 03:04 PM

The hamburgers went thru a bad phase but I hear they have gone back to their deliciousness. I will order one and report here!

The name of the restaurant is Las Cabañas.

The name of the meat company is Rancho El 17 and they offer these packages of meat as well. So new that I don't know too much about it.

Las Cabañas is known for seafood, which supposedly is really good. It is indeed the restaurant on the beach - I tend to eat my seafood at Joaquin's and go to this beach restaurant for margaritas. and those are wonderful!

Hello Blanca,
we still don't know where that restaurant is located......

I am still looking for the Thai food place in La Paz.....

BajaBlanca - 6-2-2018 at 08:49 AM

Fernweh - this restaurant is located on the beach. Where the fishing cooperative boats launch. Where the cabañas for rent are. Where the really good margaritas and seafood are.

David K - 6-2-2018 at 09:22 AM

Blanca, I think Karl (Fernweh) is saying that you never mention the town or state the place is in. caj13 mentioned La Bocana as many of us know that is where you live... but for the many who read Nomad, it would be a good idea to always include the town and area of Baja (as there are many La Bocana's in both states of Baja California).

Karl, Blanca's La Bocana is on the coast between Punta Abreojos and Bahía Asunción, just 10 miles from Abreojos.

Is Rancho 17 one of the high end high grade beef ranches from Sonora? I have had steaks from a few places using the Sonora beef that were really good.

David, the nice straight stretch of road between La Bocana and Punta Abreojos is the one that is under construction, and apparently under dispute, according to Blanca's other post.

I tried driving it heading south in late March, and it was bad! Not only are there construction zones, but sections of washboard and multiple choice detours with no signage.

After following one detour to a dead end road block, I crossed over to the salt flats, and had smooth sailing all the way. All local drivers use the flats, but I suppose that could change with an extra high tide, or the rare cloudburst!

Thank you, yes, I always used the salt flat road too. However, when Blanca, months ago, announced the planned paving of the upper graded road, I made my map showing that route and was expecting to fill in the parallel lines when I heard it was finally paved. Construction detours in Mexico are really a challenge sometimes as they often don't consider the need for signs to point the current route. We have gone a long way on a newly paved road only to come to an unbuilt bridge requiring a turnaround!

Rancho 17 is a very large feedlot beef production company. http://www.ranchoel17.com/nosotros/

As far as Sonoran beef being high end their production model is now no different then say Harris Ranch in CA.

They both use the same USA grown corn, wheat, distillers grains and by products in their feed rations. They both finish animals to the same slaughter weight and they both produce select, choice and prime grade cuts of meat.

The major difference I have seen between Mexican feedlot beef produced in Sonora or Mexicalli and USA feedlot beef is the breed of cattle. Mexican cattle have much more Zebu influence and USA cattle more European genetics.

NAFTA combined with a growing middle class in Mexico has changed the beef industry in Mexico.

Where once Mexico produced almost all it beef domestically it now imports over a 100 million pounds of USA boxed beef to meet the growing demand from the middle class. Mexico also exports around 800.000 live beef animals annually to the USA.

The prices of the restaurant in La Bocana reflect what it actually costs to offer quality beef on a menu.

I forget that not everyone knows where we are!

We are located between Vizcaino and San Ignacio and the turnoff is the exit to Punta Abreojos. We don't have a sign on the highway - only Punta Abreojos does.

Don Jorge, really interesting info. Muchas gracias,señor.

David, I really like your map.

Thank you, Blanca! I have posted all 30 of them in a thread in the Road Conditions forum... If they help, I made them for everyone's use: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=88771

update - we tried the ribeye and it was NOT good.

I have had the hamburger twice last month and they were delicious...bear in mind that the hamburger is really a cheeseburger. I personally ask for no bacon since it ain't crispy no matter what.

The tacos are good, the ceviche is excellent, come for the seafood and leave meat dishes for back home is my recommendation.

rts551 - 7-15-2018 at 01:46 PM

Best just to eat at Joaquins if in La Bocana for any length of time. Ate there last week...Abalone, Scallops, fish, Carne asada....plus salad, guacamole, appetizers, etc. We had a large group there and all were full. Must make advance arrangements.

charliemanson - 7-16-2018 at 12:47 PM

That place WAS really cool, with good food, atmosphere and service. Have not been back since The Griz, (now passed) took over the operation. They may still be operating under his suggestions, or his sons. IDK. It was a super cool place and hope it returns back to what it was before the change...if so I will be back. If still under Griz"s control, not a chance. Same with Lopez Mateos as that was cool as well until he took over and reestablished the Mangrove Inn.

PS if you do get there for fishing , ask for OSO as he is really cool and a great guide. Plus was almost a MLB pitcher!

BajaBlanca - 7-16-2018 at 01:29 PM

Griz is no longer around. May he RIP

The beach restaurant is really nice at the moment, excellent service! Excellent seafood.

Joaquin's is Joaquin's and there is no one that comes close to his deliciousness. We had him do the carne asada for my birthday party last month - if you ask nicely, he comes to your house! It was so tasty.

But this thread is solely about the meat at the Cabañas beach restaurant.
