A funny thing happened on the way to retirement

fishbuck - 10-22-2018 at 09:16 PM

Not ja ja funny but unusual.
I am in the hosipital.
And not just any but the West Tower (newest) of Hoag Hosiptal Newport Beach. Top notch.
Tomorrow in for an Endoscopy.
I went from minor ill to needing abulance transport in just 3 days.
Probably should have gone after 2.
So 3 days in and I hope what I got is easy to fix.
So far the guess is infection or alergic reaction or food posioning.
None makes sense. Same routine.
Not a call for simpithy but more a heads up of how fast it can go wrong.
Instant access to top care is essential in some cases.
I've been uncontious the past 2 days.
Not sure how well I would have faired at my camp in baja.
Definately thinking this through...

East tower sorry.
Last I was here was 30 years and the West tower was the only tower.

Keep us up to date. Suerte on all that.

One of my colleagues at work was having what he thought were heart attack symptoms, but testing determined that he had diverticulitis. It won't kill you but it's guaranteed to make your life miserable. Get that colon checked, pronto.

Yep.
Dehydration is what got me. 10 or so IV bags full of water, benedryl, and antibiotics and I might make... I can drink liquids now but still so itchy... and can't keep any food down.
I guess know you local Dr. and a have plan to get to San Diego asap.

BajaBlanca - 10-23-2018 at 01:41 AM

Wow, that is really scary! Get better quickly and health issues do come up and turn life topsy turvy real fast.

chuckie - 10-23-2018 at 07:45 AM

Get well and rethink the whole plan. The primary reason I left Mulege after 34 years, was a health issue. I developed a heart problem and was not comfortable with the care available or the time to get to it. I am a disabled VET and VA care obviously was not available. Add to that the pressure from my Daughters to get closer to home, and the decision to leave was made. It was the right one. God bless and get well...

David K - 10-23-2018 at 09:49 AM

Mike, get well as soon as you can and get your Baja retirement started!

Did you ever meet our Nomad amigo KASHEYDOG? He was with Lexus Carlsbad for years, I think he just retired or was about to and was looking for a home in Rosarito to begin years of Baja exploring in a 4x4 out from there. He enjoyed a trip to mess with the whales with Shari before he left us. That was nice!
Sadly, the Good Lord had a need for him too soon!

Were you a small or large animal Veterinarian?
Sorry, I just couldn't help myself!

Fishbuck, most importantly, get well quickly to enjoy your retirement.

fishbuck - 10-23-2018 at 10:52 AM

Wheels are in motion for my move anyway.
I am still looking to rent a small place in town and get comfortable.
Once I get the "lay of the land" I can begin to build my dream fish camp.
1st things 1st.
Check all local med facilities and find the best doc in town.
Then find the local ambulance company and set up an med evac trip ahead of time if needed.
San Quintin is fairly short ride.
Need to revisit the airlift options and pick too I guess. For trips past El Rosario I guess.

It happened quick. I should have driven myself to the hospital on the 2nd day..
3rd was too late. 4 or 5th day without care...

BajaRat - 10-23-2018 at 12:37 PM

Speedy recovery, Your dreams need you !
All the best, Lionel

You worked all your life. Don’t let this speed bump keep you from your dreams. Go big or get another job. The choice is yours....

fishbuck - 10-23-2018 at 07:32 PM

Ok. I'm home.
Out at 2.
Down to the beach for chower, sourdow bread and hot black tea...
Best meal of my life.
My bestie Lindy resued me and brought me home.
She is a PA and called the ambulance and saved me.
Clean as a whistle on the inside😊
So cause unknown. Standard follow up. Take it easy for a few and then back in the air😉

This is one of those moments.
As I was looking out of the hospital tower I could litterally see my whole life before me.
I had spent almost my entire adult life on the oceanfront in Newport Beach.
Was married to a nice lady, had a beautiful baby boy in that same hospital I was standing. A finely grown man now.
Years of training for and enjoying various sports. Enjoying the surf, diving, fishing...
Parties, friends, more parties... mysteries, adventures, misadventures... parties...

25 plus years up and down the 405 to Long Beach grinding out a living.
Infact, just saw a job ad for Gulfstream Jets at Long Beach, for an Airworthiness Inspector... for me... there if I want it. Restored to my glory again. Gulfsteam G650's. Finiest and newest private jet ever built. Richey riches for sure. Rarified Air to be certain. Elite doesn't come close... and airworthiness inspectors "hand" the plane to the pilots... every flight. And the "Delivery flight" too and meet THE CUSTOMER. Godlike figures... might need pilots too.
Guess I could use some of my Boeing stock for flight training and buy myself a jet rating at Flight Safety right at Long Beach.

Entering the rat race everyday... and winning.
But I've already won. Why race on so? Win what? I guess more money is always better than less money... isn't it?

But...

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Mark 8:36

I will now use my next 6 months getting ultra healthy and fit. And when my lease is up here I going "home" to Baja.
My new job...? Flying all around Baja in my little plane delivering donated medical supplies, school supplies, fishing supplies etc. where ever they are needed and wanted. I can meet you at the nearest runway.

That would be the best pilot job I could ever get. And one I think I CAN get too...
The boss is a good friend of mine;)

Thanks all

How about making a new version of 'Airports of Baja'/ 'Fly Baja!' book or at least? Post runway photos here on the Nomad private aircraft flying forum! While there may not be 200 runways like in the 1970s, you might have a couple dozen still open? Nomad airmech began doing one and gave us a sample page, but nothing was finalized, last I read?

You got it "Ghost"!
You call the target.
Cause you know I got the need...
I'm in... and all in...

David K - 10-24-2018 at 02:40 PM

I am not sure why this thread is in the Fishing and Hunting forum, but if you go to the Private Aircraft Travel forum here and see a few posts by me there, I have put aerial (satellite) airport images up as well as some pages from Arnold Senterfitt's book and Galen Hanselman's book.

Those were done a few years ago...

fishbuck - 10-24-2018 at 02:57 PM

We call that a " technical glitch" in the airplane biz.
And I shall begin my flight planning.in the airchives.
"All Hand's! Stand by on deck."
Prepare the Ready 1 for imminent launch!

I am going to build such a "hotrod" for this...
Cause there ain't no replacement for displacement...

But I'll start by flying my Baja "rent a wreck" soon as the Doc green lights me.
She may be ugly but she sure can... fly😉

We can use a Gopro...

fishbuck - 10-26-2018 at 01:25 PM

Plus, I'm starting with a Piper Cherokee 140. With full fuel it'a 1 seater.

chuckie - 10-26-2018 at 01:27 PM

Are you actually a LICENCED pilot?

fishbuck - 10-26-2018 at 02:43 PM

We don't need licenses anymore. And I 've taken my last physical too if I don't go pro.
But yes. But if top secret... if I tell you...

caj13 - 10-26-2018 at 02:47 PM

doesn't have a current licence, so that rules out his "delivery service" he was spouting about. In the meantime , he still does not even have a valid passport - so that creates a few issues for flying in Baja - No?

dreamer? or doer? you tell me?

chuckie - 10-26-2018 at 02:53 PM

I still cant figure out what he said....

bajaguy - 10-26-2018 at 02:56 PM

They are not "licenses", they are "certificates"

caj13 - 10-26-2018 at 04:26 PM

yeah, he doesn't have one of those either. Most pilots I know refer to em as licences, but what do they know?

And BTW David, if hes flying as part of you producing some commercially available book, he actually does need a licence, and not recreational or private, he would need to be commercial, and of course I mean certificate, not licence!

And it's all donation to the "Church of the Flying Burro". No profits made in the fictious book deal.

A pilot’s certification is commonly known as a pilot’s license according to the FAA.

Hey Bucky boy, a real pilot would have said - nosey bitter Alpha Hotels, but maybe you haven't gotten to that part of your lessons yet?

fishbuck - 10-27-2018 at 12:50 PM

Pilots don't say that.

You should go back to work. Just take lots of vacation.

Get a nice place near Loreto or La Paz. Baja Sur is way better than Norte. Get a boat and get out on the ocean.

fishbuck - 10-27-2018 at 11:33 PM

"there are four of us who would hire you to fly us down to see the whales at GN."

I am trying to put that trip together. Have been for a while.
If you are serious. I will go down to San Diego and get a fresh check-out in my rental.
Big plane. It's been to Shari's and probably everywhere else. Tough old baja bird.
But it is expensive. So just to get current before the trip will cost me 1000 or more. And I will have a fresh Annual review with a flight instructor which I need and a fresh 3rd class medical examination which I just got. Good for 2 years if I work but last ever if I stay amatuer. And fresh flight training in an airplane I already fly well.
Let me know if your still interested and start saving your pennies.

4 pax is the max. Plus a backpack and a duffle each.
I will bring a scale to the airport. And we will load to max gross takeoff weight. It's exiting. And just a little tense. Especially on dirt. On takeoff. Landing is always easy.
The longest leg is about 2-3 hours. It will be tight. And practice peeing in a bottle while sitting down. In front of your friends.
We should each have our own special pee bottle.
Or hold your water. I do. Unless flying alone or with my girl. And farther.
I let her fly so I can go in the back and stand up. We take turns. It's cute.
She likes to fly and can do it for about that long before the plane gets away from her and starts to tumble...
There only a few runways left and I don't like to make unplanned pee stops anyway. I never have. Too expensive.

Maybe it's time for you to produce some flying money.

Available for all of my share expense evenly flying friends to review after I get a refundable trip deposit.
If you don't like my hours you can have your money back.
If you do... and you will, we're going flying.

That's why I have a runway.
But 15-16 years ago when I bought my place, I was still working in Long Beach and thought I could fly down to San Quintin to my place catch a yellowtail and fly back for work on a weekend.
Easy in a plane, impossible in a car.
I flew in 1 time in a friends Cherokee 6. Oldest tiredest 6 I've ever flown. Rusty, creeky.
Before I bought my place. I fell in love with the place and knew I was home.
Later my friend totalled the plane in Bryce Canyon in a stupid pilot error. Very rookie.
No-one was hurt.
When I had flown with him I told him he need more flight instruction in the 6 before he loaned it to me. I was planning to use that plane much more...
He bought a Bonaza. He stubbornly didn't get enough flight training and hard landed that and bent it. The insurance companies wouldn't touch him after. Lost track of him.
I called his number and his son said he was deceased. I didn't want to know how.

But I still have my lots and I thank him for that.
