I carry both. I keep my passport handy and tuck my other ID and birth certificate somewhere safe.

A Drivers License...

is NOT a valid document to prove legal residence in the US. For the best current legal advice on such matters, do not rely on individual anecdotal advice here. Call a US Customs office and a Mexican Consulate. They are very nice and will explain what is actually required for both countries. I did find myself in the same situation as Marla when driving into Canada a year ago. Their immigration did not want to let me in or out of the country.

Everyone here is trying to be nice and helpful by sharing their own experiences but it would be wise to get this kind of information straight from "the horses mouth" so to speak.

Just get the passport; you won?t regret it. When that $250.00 airfare to Europe comes around, you will be ready. My sister just bought two round-trip tickets from Sacramento to London leaving next March for $220.00 apiece ? total price.
