There are 5 gears on the Allroad and it is an auto tranny. It does have Audi's "Tiptronic" though, which means you can manually change up and down
the box - it will go into and stay in the gear you select unless you redline it, and then it will change up (or not let you change down, if that would
over rev it).

Five is good. That means your 1st gear is probably pretty low. Not as good as part time 4WD with a high/low range but pretty good. Should do pretty
good in sand that is not too deep.
Hope the tires aren't real ditch-diggers, though........lack of knobbies is less important than the width of the tires.

Tires are pretty wide - 245/45-18. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S fitted -- very good in the snow for a general all season tire, but haven't tried them in
sand. Could consider a second set of rims and tires -- but that get's too expensive very quickly!

If it's your first trip, your Audi will take you to more cool places than you have time to look at.
The majority of unpaved roads in baja are traveled daily by locals in 2wd cars, so I think an Audi Offroad (the Audi that wants to be a Citroen) will
take you plenty of places.
Most of your travel time will be spent driving the main highway, and the Audi will drive a lot nicer on the highway than a sluggish bulky SUV.
The risk of theft for your Audi is probably the same for a rental late model SUV -- just get insurance, and don't stress out worrying.

That sluggish, bulky SUV will allow for you to easily pack everyones luggage, and stow the port a pottie on the roof along with the spare tire. I'd
opt for the SUV rather than be cramped for 10+ days. |
