Bummer...We've had many great meals at Ray's. Sorry to hear this bad news. His place was always on our list of must stop spots while we vacation.

Mood: After 34 years. Still in love w/ my wife

[*] posted on 12-26-2006 at 08:39 AM

Several years ago, Wendy & I stopped at Ray's on the way south for the winter. this was our first visit. We ordered coconut butterflied shrimp. Best we had ever eaten. He came over & introduced himself, and told us about getting honored with an award from some national eating magazine. Anyone know the story?????? Then again on the way this winter to Loreto we stopped for dinner, and shared it with many of the Baja 1000 drivers/riders. Fun time. Ordered same thing. And was a delicious as the other time. WE will miss this restaurant/bar on our trips north & south.

Oh no ...... :o:o
Should any of you locals run into Ray, give him a big hug from me.
Was planning on seeing him in a few weeks and was really looking forward to his oysters
and margies !!!
Does anyone know if the mural in the kitchen survived?
What a place and what a guy.
Hope he fairs well in his new place.
Anyone with info on where and when the new place might be up and running please update ..please please please.

jettygirl...read the previous posts on this thread. Ray opened a new B&B business in the Mulege valley some time ago. The name of it is Hemmingway-related. It's about 6 miles of washboard road to get there on the ice-house road. Hope that helps your quest.

I don't know Ray and have never seen his place but from what you folks are saying he is one of those people who make Baja such a fantastic place.......It is the people not the places that make such a difference.

If I ever do another book on Baja it will have a Cuban ex-pat and a grass hut in it somewhere.

Hope someone shows him copies of your posts............even Bruce's because if he is a Baja guy he will appreciate that comment..............that is life in Baja!...even more so than Chicago.
