New (Feb., 2008) Video on the cowboys of Baja's mountain ranchos!
Last night, we had the pleasure to attend a showing of a new 65 minute film at Discover Baja Travel Club, called 'Corazon Vaquero' The Heart of the
Cowboy, A Journey into California's Final Frontier.
This documentary shares the rugged life of the Baja mountain people, those called the 'last of the Californios' by Harry Crosby (who provides
commentary in the film).
Local life, music, storytelling... why the end may not be too distant for these families' way of life is included. Eve Ewing and others talk about
their 40 years visiting with the Arce's, Villavicencio's, Murillo's, etc. Much was filmed at Rancho San Gregorio which is 5 hours by mule from their
nearest neighbor, San Francisco de la Sierra.
See how they make saddles, ranch cheese, break-in mules, help each other, compare their sure-footed mules to 4X4 Toyotas (I liked that part)... life
that is little changed from the time of the Jesuits.
The video is available on line at http://www.corazonvaquero.com

I'm hooked on it. I've seen it 3 or 4 times now, almost every time Trudi of Saddling South (tourbaja.com) shows it I go! I could live in that
film...

Yes, it is a good addition to the great Baja lovers 'cult' film, "BAJO CALIFORNIA: The Limit of Time" (which is based on the Arce family of San
Francisco de la Sierra)!
If you click on 'contacts' on the web page for the film, there is a phone number and email address... otherwise, unfortunately there is no ordering
details... no price or order page...?
If you are not able to order from that contacts list, then contact Discover Baja Travel Club http://www.discoverbaja.com The video was twenty dollars the night of the showing.

Thanks Doug... I guess Cabo Ron's post yesterday about this film, and my reply (with a link to this 2008 thread) both were removed?
Anyway, it is a good movie for us Baja nuts to have and see once in awhile... like the CLASSIC Baja cult film 'Bajo California: The Limit of Time'...

Guess you better get it from Tienda Baja Nomad, then? I paid $20 (I think) when we saw it at Discover Baja last year...

They showed it at the TS film festival this year and, in attendance were many of the cowboys and a few family members, that were in the movie. It was
really so very cool. Great movie!
Remember, when in Mexico, yes may be no and no may be
maybe!

I recalled reading this thread and always wondered when we would get around to seeing it....well...at a traditional birthday party in San Igancio, I
had the great pleasure of meeting Trudi and she graciously gifted us a copy and we finally watched it...twice...last night.
Words cannot express how I feel about this piece of art, history and folklore. It is magical...informative...unique...awe inspiring...and has changed
my life. Because we live in this area and are lucky enough to spend time on some ranches...perhaps i did not fully grasp how special it is and the
film made me realize just what an honour it is to be welcomed by these folks and how their lives are a disappearing story.
I plan to visit alot more ranches asap in the heart of baja and hope to learn more of their ways...now about those burros...gotta have one.

It is rumored that Rancho San Gregorio is coming back to life. I recently purchased some delicious beef jerky made at the Ranch.
