So, was the jaw repair completed, or does he need to return to have it fixed completely?angels4 - 9-17-2011 at 03:09 PM

My guess is that Ron has not had his surgery. I have ESP. David K - 9-17-2011 at 03:46 PM
I didn't think it was a hard question... maybe there's a reason why those who have seen Ron today are not responding to it? I just hope it gets fixed
so Ron is back to his old self.SiReNiTa - 9-17-2011 at 03:47 PM
Hey folks!
Well, this was one heck of a ride that's for sure, let me first say that I am honored to be able to help such amazing people as Ron, Cristina and
their families, they are the heroes in this story for their strength and unity before such a crisis.
When I met Christine last night and saw her again this morning, I could see the determination to get through this as a united family in her eyes, she
has not stopped working hard to get her daddy out of this situation, so first of all I want to give props to her for going full steam ahead this whole
time, her husband and adorable son are also vikings for sticking this out and helping her deal with her emotions and also all of the organizational
issues that came up, they are a beautiful family, on both the outside and the inside, and I'm very glad to have found new friends in them.
Last night I spent quite a while with Ron just sitting with him and watching the movie Dick & Jane, we laughed, or I laughed and Ron chuckled
through clenched teeth, and enjoyed the quiet time together. He is such an amazing person that even just sitting with him in silence was an honor and
I could feel his energy and desire to get well.
This morning when I went to say goodbye I had tears in my eyes of pure joy to see him so happy at the fact that he was leaving the hospital with his
family.
Fdt and I took him some balloons and a card on behalf of all the nomads, I think he enjoyed them very much!!
It's amazing to see how much both Ron and Cristina have improved over the past few days, and I'm so thankful that they will both recover from this and
be stronger people because of it.
As I lay in bed last night I found it comforting to think that even though these monsters who did this beat them badly and almost took their lives,
they did not succeed, they did completely the opposite, for I believe that what does not break you makes you stronger, and I know that once Ron &
Cristina and their families recover from this tragedy, they will be stronger people, they will have stronger relationships with each other and with
all of their friends and they will have a stronger relationship with God.
It's funny how bad things bring good people together, and I'm very proud to be part of this family of cybernuts! =P
I also want to let you know that Ron has been told what happened to him by his daughter and his wife, but they have decided not to tell him what
happened to Cristina just yet, it's a lot to handle for both of them. He took it better than they expected and was all smiles when I went to say good
bye, I even got a hug!!!
We will be making the hospital expenses available for you guys, so you can see what the money was spent on, but it might take a few days while Ron
gets settled in at his daughters house and she finds time to scan and send them.
Thanks for all the prayers and donations and visits, I know it's taken a lot out of all of us, both physically and emotionally, but I would not
hesitate to do it all over again if any of you should need it.
So...after a couple of tanks of gas, a few sleepless nights and very little food I'm pleased to say that this ordeal is finally coming to an end (we
hope) and both Ron and Cristina are well on the road to a complete recovery.
Oh...as far as the surgery goes, it was not completed, it's my understanding (and I could very well be wrong) that they will get Ron to a doctor in
the U.S. on monday so they can check that out and finish it up there. As I said, I could be wrong.
Anyway, thanks a bunch to everyone! Now...I'm off to clean the house and take a much needed shower!Neal Johns - 9-17-2011 at 04:01 PM

vgabndo - 9-17-2011 at 07:24 PM
Ron, I don't know you...just recognized your handle...but I trust community, and clearly your tribe knows you stand tall as a man among men. That's
plenty good enough for me. While I wept at reading your misfortune and agonized with you when you had "lost" your sweetie, I have wept too to read of
your recovery and maybe even more at the generosity and deep desire to help which springs so naturally out of this Nomad community.
How on earth do we use this lesson to strengthen the other communities in which we live. I see how this community has put aside its differences and
pulled together and wonder how that magic could ever be applied outside what for many of us is only a cyber-friendship. When this thread was new and
raw, David K wrote: "one for all and all for one". My thought at the time was wow, this emergency even has DK spouting socialism.
I acknowledge my activist judgement and projection while noticing that the sentiment he expressed seemed to work nicely when one giving member of a
small community needed a hand; many were outstretched.
The "something positive" piece I'm taking from this is around community and how to grow and nurture it, and how it can serve us. It can't replace
insurance, but insurance can't replace a heart.
I had a thought about you today as I crossed my neighbor's driveway and saw again the dried splash of animal blood there. There is a lion in our
neighborhood taking cats and raccoon. It isn't completely safe to be out and about at night. I prefer lions to the predators in your neighborhood, but
it seems most 'hoods have some kind of objective danger these days. Heal well. I hope I get the honor to meet you.
(This piece was appropriately placed when I started it this morning! It may now be in the middle of a completely different mood!)Brian L - 9-17-2011 at 07:42 PM

Beautifully and thoughtfully written message, Vagabundo, and the timing of its posting, perfect. Thank you. I've followed your posts for years now and
hope to meet you one day.
This is a time in which all of us are reflecting on life, joyous that Ron and Cristina are past this initial travesty and on the path to recovery and
renewal. In many ways we, too, are at a crossroads, a place of new beginnings in life.
There's still many miles before sleep and much more love and laughter to share. We've all been given another first chance. Grab it. Walk on! Live like
it ain't over yet, yet with the wisdom of how precious and fleeting life is.
We've been given a unique opportunity of reflection, to gather our energies together and approach life anew, embrace life, choose life.
The journey of existence always comes to the same place: we re-merge with Essence, for there is no other reality, no other place.
While we have this time in physical form its ours to savor, sensuate, live big. The details are small, just live big.
The time or place we reach the rainbow bridge really isn't ours to command. Ours is to be in the now and live with intelligent wise choices for the
present and future.
Thanks, Everyone, for walking together these days.David K - 9-17-2011 at 11:59 PM
Lets not get political... I just want Vgabundo to know because we all got together to help Ron and Cristina that it WASN'T an example of (what he
called) 'socialism'... (a government program).. but of PRIVATE CITIZENS working together to help one of our own.mtgoat666 - 9-18-2011 at 12:01 AM

Wow! I am convinced that all your support and prayers made this possible.
Seeing the reactions of Doctors and Nurses on Wednesday at the hospital and hearing their comments after they seen Ron that afternoon has left no
doubt that this is truly a Miracle.
Thank You God for hearing us out..........!

I very much appreciate what Vagabundo and Mulegena have said here.
There has been so much positive energy felt here on the Nomad board that it was impossible to keep a dry eye. I for one really felt a connection with
all of you. Could it be synchronicity at work? The power of prayer? Yes, I do believe so.
Sirenita you are amazing.Osprey - 9-18-2011 at 06:26 AM
Some Nomad friends have said privately that they have kept the matter very quiet with their families because they don't want to alarm them to the
dangers down here. I respect that but the other side of that coin is that this place is peopled by frontier types who help each other when things go
wrong.
For every cultural clash there exists thousands of intercultural displays of affection and kindness -- this whole exercise has been an ongoing symbol
of that spirit. While we watch and wonder while fear keeps others NOB let's hope this event will not diminish our love of the place and it's people.
Over the next few months I expect to see an inordinate number of posts about Bear Mace and Flare Guns. Hope they are offset by trip reports of fun
loving travelers enjoying the place as they always have.TMW - 9-18-2011 at 07:02 AM

No time for lots of posts- busy collecting emergency info for neighbors, researching radio systems for distress calls between our distant neighbors,
discussing the merits of various intruder injury-inflicting devices and placing online orders to upgrade what we have.
If we were paranoid about living in Mexico we wouldn't be here, but this incident has been a slap in the face not to be complacent about emergency
planning and a reminder that we will be on our own. Unless someone has a question that I have the info for, I'll keep it to myself to save space for
trip reports and photos, traveler guidance and Mexico info that is the focus of this forum.DENNIS - 9-18-2011 at 08:38 AM

All though the original reason for the creation of this thread is beyond belief horrifying, the response to this occurrence has indeed been an insight
into the best of what humanekind offer each other.
Some real heroes have shown their value to us all. Of course Ron & Christina are for runners in heroism for their effort to look after their
neighborhood, and from that gesture, (all though it put them in harms way of some of the worst sort of souls), all else that has happened is born
positive full on heroism from those who know and love them. I am only an observer from far, far away who could offer nothing more than a prayer, but
in the end has been rewarded with a story of great hope for humanity.KASHEYDOG - 9-18-2011 at 09:14 AM

Well said.
I agree. Very well said.. ....
I for one have always lived my life in the spirit the "frontier". Much like Ron, I'm always willing to pitch in and help whenever and wherever I can.
It's just the way I think we should all live our lives. However, in that same spirit of the "frontier" the lesson to be learned from this tragic event
is one I think many of us have forgotten and become complacent about. If you think there's something going on that's wrong and you're going to check
it out don't go with out the "necessary" tools". When we try to "defend" our neighbors, our property, lives or family we put ourselves in the role of
a policeman. You better respond to the situation as if you were one and bring the proper tools. The situation may not always prove to be as simple as
telling the criminals to stop and leave the area. In the future be prepared for the worst and hope you get by with the least. Doing so may save your
life and the lives of you loved ones.
You don't have to agree or disagree, it's just my way. But know if you need to call me for help I will be there. Ready, willing and
ABLE.for whatever the job is even just to pull you out of the ditch or for you Dennis, get you a beer......KASHEYDOG - 9-18-2011 at 09:20 AM

While I have still to read through many pages of this thread I continue to be overwhelmed at the outpouring of support, from the Nomad community and
beyond.
Responding to "unusual" inactivity at a neighbors ( unarmed and without dogs) last Saturday I was "greeted" by three subjects, two of which were known
to me. After an "escalating" exchange I was stabbed, beaten and left for dead.
What my wife did next was nothing less than heroic, coming to the aid of her husband and following victim to the same, senseless violence.
Neighbors and friends responding, picking up my bloody, lifeless body and taking into their care Cristina. While they transported us to emergency care
they assisted police in hunting down the perpetrators.
The care given us over the following days was no less spectacular and by Wednesday I had awoken from a coma. Surgery was performed Thursday to wire my
jaw shut. Their attention for my care shifted from my primary wounds to my blood pressure. ( yeah, I know)
Cristina continued to improve in the care of family and outcare and today we both stand "freed" from a week of hell.
Many thanks go out to Sirena, Fernando, Gene, Reyes, Chava, family / friends, doctors / nurses and countless Nomads who have followed and contributed
to our ordeal. A very special thanks goes out to Discover Baja Travel Club.
For now we would ask that you respect our need for healing / recovery in the coming days.

Does anyone know why Ron and Cristina were attacked so viciously? What were the guys up to? Why resort to such violence if they were just robbing a
home? Why were they all wearing soccer jerseys (noticed that for some reason when seeing their pictures)? KasheyDogs post above makes me wonder if
Ron was armed somewhat (maybe not enough) and was jumped because of it...woody with a view - 9-18-2011 at 09:24 AM

was pretty funny when the real Ron came up and introduced himself and I didnt believe it was him!!!
He and cristina came to my rescue and treated me like a member of their family...i will never forget.

I have a hunch that Ron posted with help. It had a strong ring of coherency that I wouldn't expect at this early time in his recovery.

people, including me... Wishing you and Cristina are soon able to return to the life and home you both love!!!jeans - 9-18-2011 at 06:06 PM
Wow...I've been away from the board for a while and was horrified to hear of this, but amazed when the story unfolded how everyone pulled together to
help.
I'm so glad Mr. & Mrs. Bajagringo are on the road to recovery and proud to call you amigos.....even if we've never met.BajaWarrior - 9-18-2011 at 06:54 PM
Ron,
I'm so glad your recovering quickly. You gave us all a scare! We met only recently at the Mike Younghusband Powerpoint Presentation and wish I had
more time that evening to swap stories with you.
This is my first reply on this post. I have read it in it's entirety as it unfolded and was too angry to participate in this discussion. I cannot
imagine what you went through and I'm happy you are still with us.
Know that there is a lot of love on this board directed to you and your wife.

Welcome back to the world, Ron y Cristina. We missed ya.
Ron, I have a great idea for your new diet...
"Avacado/Cheesecake Pudding!"
Well, if that doesn't turn you on..I have a friend who suggests this:
Which will it be?krafty - 9-18-2011 at 11:03 PM
Bajawarrior, I feel the same-do not know these folks but was glued to the thread and PRAYED for their survival-returned this evening from ny after a
dear dear friend died and i had to attend to family-when i left i had no idea of the outcome and no computer access on the road, so was totally
thrilled to come back and hear this wonderful news-lifted my spirits. you nomads are the best!tripledigitken - 9-19-2011 at 04:50 AM
Relieved to here you got your jaw wired up. Both of you take your time getting back to your normal life, enjoy a little pampering from the family.
You two certainly had us all worried for you.
just a thought.....................

Hope it makes more sense after the delayed spellcheck. Ron knows what I'm talking about despite the sloppy writing. (Woolgrowers is a Basque
restaurant in Bakersfield, the soups are always excellent)SiReNiTa - 9-19-2011 at 10:01 AM
I'm so glad to see Ron back online!! It must be a relief to be able to communicate even if it is just by typing!!
Be strong Ron, hope to see you very soon, be good, listen to your daughter!
Once you can eat solids again come on down and we'll treat you to a night out at ophelias
Much love and prayers going your way!!24baja - 9-19-2011 at 05:42 PM
Dear Mr & Mrs Baja Gringo,
Brett & I are so happy you are recovering from your ordeal. We have learned alot from you and tho we have never met we consider you a good friend
to have in Baja. All of the Nomads came to you in whatever ways they could to offer what support they could because you are a very special family and
have given so much to us. We just wish we could have been in a better position to come to your aide. Well God Bless and keep you and your family
safe, our prayers have been answered.Iflyfish - 9-20-2011 at 07:53 AM
Whew!!! What a ride! So glad you are safe and on the mend. Like all the other Nomads here I have read with anger, saddness, awe and wonder the
outpouring of caring and regard for you and your wife. I have been touched by the generosity and support that this group can generate in times of
trouble. Vagabundo said it well about community. We are all blessed to have this wonderful group of cyper friends at our backs and their wind in our
sails, sometimes better to be upwind of some of that wind. I digress.
I hope that from this experience we will all take the time NOW to clarify the medical resources available to us in Mexico. It is a complicated system,
especially when you add the cultural differnces to the mix. We all should have a durable Medical Power of Attorney, someone we trust with our lives.
This Medical Power of Attorney is available in both the US and Mexico.
At some point I hope we will start a thread on this very important topic.
For now, it is wonderful to have our friends back and on the road to recovery!!!

Wow Im new to this board and have been reading this thread for the 2 weeks Ive been here. It is heartening to say the least, that this group is so
cohesive and caring. I read with horror and disgust about your ordeal Ron and Cristina.
It saddens me that situations like that exist in this world but on the other hand it lifts my spirits to know there are good people that will not
hesitate to rally for a friend. Hope to meet you someday Sir.David K - 9-20-2011 at 08:34 AM

Get well in a hurry Ron and CristinaKatiejay99 - 9-20-2011 at 09:03 AM
RON - The Governors office is calling me - they are on the phone right now - they want your phone number and email address. URGENT!!
Okay - well, I called Serenita and she is going to get in touch with Ron and Crissy so I can pass on information between the two. Just so everyone
knows - the Governor has heard us!

Good thing it wasn't an important emergency, but I'm sure he's a busy man.MexicoTed - 9-20-2011 at 11:19 AM
Hey Ron and Cristina,
So happy to hear you are recovering physically. Now you need to begin the mental/emotional healing. Take your time and get there at your pace.
Look forward to seeing you in Baja,
Ted

What Chuck said, and I'll add that I've done some serious navel-gazing as a result of this thread and have concluded that I need to be far more
prepared for this sort of calamity, even if that means losing a good chunk of the good old "flock it, whatever" feeling I've depended on Baja to give
me over the years. Time to finally grow up? Maybe, but just a little bit.DENNIS - 9-20-2011 at 02:41 PM

It's just a matter of all of us keeping up with the times. Baja isn't all the museum some wish to think it is.
Uhhm, I Have Refrained From Posting This
Gypsy Jan - 9-20-2011 at 03:03 PM
While Ron and Cristina were in crisis.
But, when I told hubby about their situation, he replied, "Now you you know why we have dogs and a fenced property inside a gated community."
He added, "When someone arrives unexpected at our gate, ringing our bell and asking for entrance, I always let the dogs out first and then establish a
protocol."David K - 9-20-2011 at 03:31 PM

Safety comes first... even our late amigo 'jrbaja' lived inside a gated community while posting publicly against them as isolating yourself from the
'real' Mexican experience.comitan - 9-20-2011 at 03:35 PM

Jr. Got out of the gated community as much as he could and did a lot of associating with the Mexican community. Especially farms and rancho's.David K - 9-20-2011 at 03:43 PM

Yes, I know... that still doesn't change the fact where he lived.BajaBlanca - 9-20-2011 at 03:55 PM
well...may wonders never cease ... the Gov himself ...maybe he will pay the billsssssssssssssssssssssssssss
qui sas qui sas qui sas
I seem to have read somewhere that he was out of the country ??? somewhere in Asia ??? Cause I can't believe he would have ignored all of us. N he
was on my mind last night.
I also got a San Diego paper from a couple days ago and homicides are UP, way up in San Diego. Last year was a record low and this year is looking
like it will be high.
Can't wait to hear what the Gov has to say ....DanO - 9-20-2011 at 04:39 PM
