Baja Bernie - 5-24-2005 at 06:42 AM

Well this silly post on CONSTIBUCTORS has seen a wonderful ride up to this point and it has revealed some unexpected as well as hoped for results.

Ken Bondy quite correctly and gently pointed out the fact that when I start writing almost anything I get carried away with my thoughts and am somewhat careless with where my fingers rest on the keyboard.

Quoted by my cyberfriend Ken

Bernie I hope you realize that my post was in jest and just for fun, albeit somewhat at your expense. Nothing personal, you know I consider you a good cyberfriend. Plus I have read both of your books several times

[Edited on 5-24-2005 by Ken Bondy]

Ken this is one of the most precious things I enjoy about this board and that is that the majority of us sorta believe in that thing I wrote a few years ago?BAJA IS ABOUT FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS?and it don?t matter nothin? how you spell the word the meaning is ALL in the thought

Ken thank you for the kind and friendly thought!

I had hoped to accomplish a few other things with this fildubbed post and some of this was displayed by the posts by several of those folks someone dubbed lurkers.
Pleased to say I saw a bunch of new names and a few of those I had not seen for a while.

Quote zforbes (could this be a relative of the guy that publishes that great magazine) I have enjoyed reading all the good information from the knowledgeable folks on board, and I'm using suggestions to put together my next visit, I think to La Paz or Loreto. I must say that I was quite relieved to finally hear from the women on the board, because at first when I tuned in, it seemed Very Male. Now that stuff goes to off topic (which I also read, but only in small doses)and the info and pictures are easier to access.Thank you to the poets, writers and artists among us for your lovely gifts.

Really nice words for all of us and a great reminder that at least a few people listen and hear what we attempt to convey on this board (Thanks for allowing this Doug?he is the nice guy who runs this place)

And another?by my fren, Kin Bundy?
OK I confess. I spelled "friend" wrong in my last post and, unlike Bernie, chickened out and corrected it!
++Ken++

One of the areas I had hoped to see did not materialize to the degree that I had hopped and that was the Ladies (no I do not use the word loosely) of Baja. They did not respond as I had hoped. Perhaps, as one indicated, the word turned her off. Anyway I believe that the lack of female participation on this board is not reflective of their contributions in the PARADISE OF BAJA.

I know that I am trying your collective attention spans but please bear (ha?another word) with me. This is a quote from my first book (okay Bruce the name is Mi Baja No Hurry No Worry) ?From the very first time I visited Baja I have had an image that seemed to just flirt at the edges of my conscious mind????.I would look over and see a carload of females heading south??They started coming before the advent of the Toll Road and they have never stopped. They seem to follow that road as though drawn by a Mexican Pied Piper. No they are not all young and they surely were not all ?vamps???Mostly they were a more seasoned bunch of people, but none of them acted as if they were anyone?s grandmas. They were women and they seemed to know exactly what they were looking to find.?

Enough of this I really enjoyed the posts arrows and kisses alike---no that just ain?t true. Every normal person enjoys to nice things in life and I AM THE NORMAL NOMAD.

One last thing?Mike OdelL?HAPPY BIRTHDAY?suggest some of that Mexican soup (the name of wich exkapes me)

PS. I pushed the Preview Button and every work is typed as it was intended!

Me No - 5-24-2005 at 09:11 AM

Bernie. Today Mike will probably be looking for some Menudo. Is that the soup you were refering to?

Rob....!!!!! Are you one of the VERY lucky cats that live in Dreamland? I had no idea that San Felipe offered such a great beach head and campos such as your's! I had talked to the guy in the first house with the off little house-gargage next to it....seeking data about whats for sale there. I was prepared to buy on the spot. I have enclosed a picture of the house we were stealing the t.v. from  We are going back there in the first part of July to snoop around. Do you know if there are any rentals there we can use for a week or two?

Age 52

jrbaja - 5-24-2005 at 10:08 AM

never been to Baja, too dangerous. Been getting all my info from the experts on here and a couple of books. Mine will be coming out soon.
Whining my way to BOLA.

wait, is this still an age-o-meter?

bigzaggin - 5-24-2005 at 10:11 AM

cause if it's is, I'm 32 in December. First trip was age 11, hauled to Quatros Casas (via Cabras) in the RV of my best friend's dad, himself a Baja vet of 30 years. Remember being shocked at how cold the water was and scolded for eating the last of the Pop Tarts. Subsequent trip was one year later, with an older friend. Uncertain of where to camp after surfing Popotla, we opted for a hotel just south of Rosarito on the libre (still there - east side of road near all the ceramic shops). The following morning we left our stuff in the room(duh) and went for a surf at Calafia, returning to find the maid had stuffed our every last possession into her cart, claiming she was going to "clean it." That marked the last time I've stayed in a hotel anywhere in Baja.

Still go down whenever work allows...my friends and I have posited, perhaps out of desperation, that "our 40's will be our best Baja days." Would appreciate confirmation of this theory.

The first picture includes our house about half way down. It has a Canadian flag out front and is 2 houses south of the one with the Hobi Cat in front. The second picture is of Harry and Ernie's house. Unfortunately, there are no rentals available. If you want to stay in this area, there is excellent camping @ Nuevo Mazatlan, 2km south of us. You can check it out on David's site. BTW, when did you take the pictures?
Bert and Adrienne finally made it out here for our last New Years party.
It was Lynn Flock that you spoke with. I just towed him here from KM9 with a blown head gasket. I think he's been here for more than 25 years. Rob

Oh alright guys!

Sallysouth - 5-24-2005 at 10:23 AM

I started going to Baja when I was 6 yrs old. We went to Estero Beach, not much there back then, and made it a permanent summer home.My grandparents were the first of the family to go there, back before I was born.:O I got married and had my first child in Ensenada at the ripe old age of sixteen! She is living in Baja full time now and has been for several years, as some of you know.I visit her for months at a time, every year.We still go to Estero Beach for our annual family re-unions every summer, and my hubby works in Ensenada often for a US based company.Baja will always be in my blood, along with the rest of my family. In fact we are planning our retirement in the next few years down there! I'll be 54 yrs in a couple of weeks and proud of it!!Great topic Bernie and some pretty funny replies:lol::lol: Saludos Nomads, Sally

bajaandy - 5-24-2005 at 11:17 AM

Cool thread.... it's fun to get to know a bit more about you crazy baja dudes and dudettes. Myself, I'm 41 and started like so many others... with mom and dad way back when to TJ and Ensenada. Of late (last 20 years or so) it's been surf trips up and down the coast. And although I'll never get tired of surfing, I now want to do some other exploring as well. One of these days I'll climb Picacho del Diablo. (Was going to be this season, but no time to get away! Story of my life.)
See you in the Baja.

I am 25 with a strike and a prison prior which makes me how old?

BajaVida - 5-24-2005 at 11:26 AM

and have been going to Baja since the mid 60s staying at El Faro Beach (around the time Coco worked there--but I do not remember him)

Cincodemayo - 5-24-2005 at 01:10 PM

Well now...Turned the big FIVE O on Cincodemayo....
First time to Ensenada in the early seventies, the whole peninsula in 1980 for 3 great weeks. What a great stretch of land Baja is....

Cincodemayo - 5-24-2005 at 01:17 PM

Back in the early seventies I was initiated at Hoosong's Cantina...the Mexican at the door reminded me of Barney Fife with his ancient 22 revolver..I wonder if he kept a single round in his top pocket like Barney did?

Baja Bernie - 5-24-2005 at 03:40 PM

I totally agree that more women should be posting because they have contributed a ton toward the late history of Baja.

Did you know that women from Enseneda would catch a sailing schooner to make the trip up to San Diego, stayed at a cottage on Pt. Loma that rented rooms and went shopping in Old Town and then returned home by sea. Why! It was much more comfortable and shorter than the buckboard ride over the trails to San Diego. Way back in the mid 1800's and up until about 1890's

WOW! No, did not knkow that BB! Thanks! Sounds WAY MOre Fun than the trip by van to Yuma Old Town! Lol Lol! Tho we still Try to have lotsa fun & as many trips as we can agree on! LOl Lol!

44 years

Started going to Puerto Nuevo when I was 14! Way before it was what it is now, I have some cool pictures of the lobsters they used to serve, I think there was only 1-2 restaurants, breaks my heart to go there now. I've been as far as Guerrero Negro but plan to go further sometime.

Baja Bernie - 5-26-2005 at 01:42 PM

Welcome to the board--New Port certainly has changed over the years. I remember when there were only 3 or 4 homes that were open to the occasional gringo that wandered by. It was just like sitting down with a bunch of friends and the thing that sticks out in my mind was--if you wanted another coke or beer you could just wander over and pick one up--the only thing they insisted on was that you always leave the empty bottle on the table-confusing until I saw them count the empty's to total the bill. My first time was in 1959 with another couple and we each ordered two lobsters (because we were used to only a half in the states. So do the math--Del Marline and my wife, Lu Ann--spent a long time sitting there and polishing off the wonderful and oh so large lobsters. Still go to the same house and the biggest thing that is diffferent is the kids that run it could buy and sell me all day and still have a whole lot of pesos left over.

oh, all right. And I recommend prunes and bran flakes for constibution. 56 - first trip with my dad for dove hunting when I was about 10. Then became hooked in the 70's with trips to Guadalupe hotsprings, KM81, Conception Bay. Travels to Baja over the past 30 years has enriched my life, and this board has been an inspiration in many ways in more recent years, as I learn from all you old farts.

Lurking newbies

Hi, Bernie...thanks for graciously encouraging people like me to post. I'm someone who observes for a while before jumping in, so I appreciated the (repeated) invitations. I was surprised that such a small percent of the contributors are women (thank you, SallySouth, for counting!). Maybe like me, they are a little cautious about putting their names on public boards. My grannie used to say, "Fools names and fools faces always appear in public places." She was really talking about don't write on the toilet stalls, but it's also not bad advice for message boards. I have really enjoyed reading this board over the last six months, though, and the sometimes wicked humor is definitely one of the big attractions -- besides all the good Mexico advice and recipes. Thanks again for the invite to say hello...and are there other women out there? Zoe

Sallysouth - 5-31-2005 at 01:02 PM

Welcome Zoe!!! I tried to count the "wimmen" that responded to this post but, as you pointed out, sometimes we we should be cautious. I thought maybe one reason many would not reply is because they don't want anyone to know their real age! Just a theory.. Glad you joined in!! :biggrin:I'll be looking for your posts in the future. Saludos, Sally

Gals and Guys!

Just wanted you to know that making a mistake in this life is all about how you deal with said mistake. When I started this thread my fingers got all twisted up and the immediate result was that I coined a new word and numerous persons of both genders got a laugh at what was perceived to be this old guys expense.

Susrprise! Because of how I dealt with the situation I got a bunch of U-2-U's from newly met friends. I had a ball and this silly mistake caused a few newby's to stick their heads out and say hello.

AND I just got a terrific new T-Shirt--it has a Mexican Flag waving over the right breast and "I'm a constributer on Nomads! in blue lettering---Thanks Santiago.

Gotta tell you that had I designed it I would have had the flag mounted unside down to show the distress involved in the whole situation.

I promise not to get any prune juice on my new shirt.

EAT your hearts out because I believe that there are only three of these beauties in existance.

Thanks to all of you for all of the fun on this thread.

Not bad!Well over 4,000 hits in just few days.
