1-1 at the half!
...and both goals by Mexicans!
Marquez with the first in the 6th minute, fully atoning for his earlier unthinking handball in the penalty zone.
Then Borgetti, back from injury, trying to head one away but unfortunately putting it in the Mexican net:

Oh, so close. It took a FANTASTIC goal to beat Mexico. Wow.
I was out fishing the first half. The game was rebroadcast on marine vhf radio by a local pangero.Oso - 6-24-2006 at 02:53 PM
Yes it was fantastic- in the air.
Mexico has nothing to be ashamed of, 120 minutes well-fought.

England-Ecuador zero-zero at the half, and I mean ZERO-ZERO. Absolutely NOTHING happening. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
If the rest of the games were like this, I'd have to agree with Bill
Screw it, I guess I gotta take the vieja to fn Wall-Mart. Maybe we'll get back in time for Portugal- Nederlands.
Soccer Hysteria
MrBillM - 6-25-2006 at 10:09 AM
One TV News commentator last night had an interesting take on the Soccer Culture. He said that he thought it good that Soccer had never caught on in
the U.S. because the hysteria and rioting that the rest of the world seems to accept as an inevitable part of the game has not crossed into our
culture. When there is a fan running onto the field in an MLB game, it makes the frontpage in the U.S. So far, the only rioting involved with
American sports has been in the victor city after a Championship and those have started in ethnic neighborhoods used to rioting for whatever reason.daveB - 6-25-2006 at 10:13 AM

"The United States is out of World Cup soccer. We've been eliminated. The U.S. loses this thing every four years. It's like we're Democrats." --Jay

Dang! Missed most of the Portugal-Holland match. Sounds like it was almost violent enough for MrBillM. Set a record for cards; 16 yellows and 4
reds, both teams finishing with 9 on a side. This Cup has already set a record for red cards- 23 so far I think.
Maybe FIFA had a prayer-meetin with the refs, the flow of cards seems to have slowed- either that or today's teams were more polite.
Brasil-Ghana ma?ana!Don Alley - 6-26-2006 at 06:07 PM
The Portugal-Holland match was a hoot. Rough game, four ejected and one Portugese player injured by a nasty foul. In the second half it just rained
yellow cards. They may be short 3 guys against England, who had to be loving it.
The Brit commentator called it "The Battle of Nurenburg" lol.SiReNiTa - 6-27-2006 at 06:48 AM
we had a chance to win but didn't like some one said there can only be one and we sure are proud of the way our team played like never before and
probably like never again but then again they were up against world champs here...so i think we did pretty good arriba mexico ca.....!!!!!

Brasil 3-0
y Ghana se quedo con las ganas...
All kinds of records going down. 200th World Cup goal for Brazil, 15th for Ronaldo.
Over 300 yellow cards this Cup so far, more than 2 dozen reds.
To their credit, Ghana is one of only three first timers to ever advance to second round. When moving the ball downfield out of traffic, they show
incredible speed. A good showing overall.
Prediction: Spain will take France this afternoon. Brazil will take Spain in quarter-finals.vandenberg - 6-27-2006 at 10:30 AM
Brazil- Ghana
Excellent game and Ghana deserved a little better result. Poor finishing kept them from getting on the board. But Brazil ,who did not play that much
better, is deadly if giving the slightest chance. Fun to watch.
And Oso, I'm with you on your predictions. Would love to see a Brazil- Argentina final.Oso - 6-27-2006 at 02:04 PM
Well, I got the first part of my prediction wrong. Brazil will take the Frogs in the quarterfinal. Great hook by Zidane. Interesting, with all the
news these days about racism in France, to see so many noir on their team.
Let's see how Jesse's prognostication is doing... Anybody care to do the math? 80-85%?

Van,
Looks like you might get your wish.
Here's my inexpert prediction for the rest of this thing:
Argentina takes Germany
Italy takes Ukraine
Portugal takes England
Brazil takes France
Argentina takes Italy
Brazil takes Portugal
Italy takes Portugal for 3rd place
Brazil takes Argentina for the Cup.

Just when I became discouraged at the lack of World Cup Rioting, Israel invades the Gaza Strip and gives us some great graphics as they send
Diaperheads to meet their Virgins. It makes for a great break from watching all of the flooded East Coast territory. BORING.vandenberg - 6-30-2006 at 11:10 AM

Well schiesse! Didn't see that coming. Neither did most Germans, I think. But, Klinsman is coaching, not playing and I don't think home field
advantage will carry them past the Italians on Tuesday. It did go all the way to penalties but a win is a win and close only counts in horse-shoes.
I understand the Argentine coach committed sepuku immediately after the game. Good ref for a change. Did what a good ref should; talk first, card
only when necessary.
The second game of the day went pretty much as expected. The only surprise was that Ukraine got as far as they did.
Probly just as well I have no bets out. I'm still looking for Brazil to take the Cup, only the final will be against Italy. If the Frogs beat the
Cariocas, I'll quit guessing. Portugal/England should be a good dust-up. Both have a rep for getting physical. I'm still going with Portugal on
that one. The Brits have Beckham, but not much else.
You need to get out of the prediction business - you suck! So much so, that I'm now worried that you may have jinxed Italy, which is (as I said
before) looking pretty good. Better than they have in years.
Regarding the referees - you are aware that FIFA is changing the rules of the game, and that the imposition of the cards is mandated? And that the
refs are being evaluated for membership during the World Cup?
If you can point me to the section of the rules where it says that, upon an infraction, the ref should "talk" to the player before imposting a
sanction, hats off - 'cause it ain't there!
You may disagree with them, but those ARE the rules. Take the USA - Italy game. Many cards, right? Take, again the Italy - Australia game. Many fewer
cards, right? Both were very physical games, so what's the difference? I'll tell you - the game with the socceroos was a clean game, the game with the
US just plain dirty, and ugly. It's not the refs. And this is one of the aspects of the ESPN commentators that peees me off the most.
[Edited on 7-1-2006 by Roberto]Oso - 6-30-2006 at 10:12 PM
OK, I guess I've been listening too much to the ESPN guys and some of it has seeped through to the point I'm repeating it. Bad karma. From here on,
I'll go back to Univision. I guess I was just glad to hear play by play (more or less) in my first language. It is an improvement over 4 and 8 years
ago when the American commentators didn't even pay attention to what was happening on the field but just prattled on with irrelevant anecdotes.
ALL my predictions haven't been wrong. Only, like maybe half???
I'll stop now and just watch.
What ever happened to Toto Scilacci and his cuerno problem?Oso - 7-1-2006 at 10:55 AM
Portugal 3-1 on penalties. Once again it comes down to the better goalie... and luck.
No more predictions.
My only comment now is: The way this whole tournament has been played, Greg Louganis would have been MVP.

If, and that's a BIG if, we'll see how the frogs stand up to a team with defense with only ONE forward.
Look, Zidane is a great player - sees the whole field, like few players do, but he can't win the game on his own. And while Henri's goal was
spectacular, let's face it - there was a great deal of luck there. They are very good at controlling the game, but did you guys SEE Italy today? Or
Germany for that matter? A whole difference level of game, I think. They DID show that by controlling the midfield, and shutting down Ronaldinho (did
he even play against them), Brasil has nowhere to go.
I ain't making any predictions - but, as I said right after the first game, Italy is looking VERY good this year. Italy is a country of brilliant
individuals who can't get their act together in therms ok playing together. The same is true of the soccer team. THIS year, they are playing together,
have a coach who is not afraid to risk and attack, so WATCH OUT.Dave - 7-4-2006 at 06:35 PM

Alemania 3-1
Oso - 7-8-2006 at 02:26 PM
The game for 3rd place is always anticlimactic per se and the first half was so boring I nodded off a couple times. But I'm glad I woke up for the
2nd half in time to see some pretty futbol.
Two beautiful long shots by the pig foreman on either side of an almost comical own goal by Petit, I think. Then at the end Portugal redeemed itself
with a gorgeous diving header for the "gol de honor". Sweet. Now the Germans have an excuse to drink some bierbancoduo - 7-9-2006 at 01:48 PM

WTF was ZZ thinking? That's not the way he was supposed to end his career. Now, like Maradona will always be remembered for the "mano de Dios" play,
Zidane will be remembered for that head butt. I can't wait to hear his explanation...
And that's the end of my sports commentary untill 2010.
