Quake activity in Asuncion area

Iflyfish - 12-8-2006 at 04:55 PM

Mui interesante indeed.

I like what Barry A has to say. You are on top of something and it is moving. I also like what Juan has to say.

I had the feeling you described once in the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. They had an earthquake and we were on the second floor. It felt like Jell-O beneath us. Mexico City of course is built on fill and it is like cubes of jello floating in thick cream. That was one of the most unsettling feelings of my life. The earth should be SOLID, it just feels so wrong to have it move like that. In California we used to have these rollers, like a garden hose that is whipped. You could actually see the ground rise and fall like a wave. That is exactly what it was, a wave.

I wonder too if there is buldgeing. Does it feel like the earth is moving back and forth or up and down or both? That may give you some clue of what is happening.

That is a LOT of seismic activity.

Stay safe.

Iflyfish...Isn't that museum fascinating? While we were there they had the 20th anniversary of the great Mexico City quake and across the street from the museum they had hunderds of enlarged pictures of the devastation and one of our guides was there when it happened....he said it went on and on and on and on. Unbelieveable pictures. The traffic was unimaginable so I could only think how chaotic that city would get if when another giant quake hits. The liquifaction there will sink many buildings as like you said the whole city is built on fill....

shari - 12-8-2006 at 05:04 PM

The last one a minute ago was just a very big boom and thump like something ran into the house....the last one was kind of an up and down thing and the first one was back and forth...Some last for 5 seconds and others just go BUMP all of a sudden...some have shattering BOOMS like thunder and others just rumbled....go figure!! Two days ago in SAn Roque there were lots of dead crabs on the beach....don't know if someone dumped a sack of dead ones or something killed them...hmmm. Does anyone know if they are registering today up in the states???

Cincodemayo - 12-8-2006 at 05:14 PM

Shari...here's all your current information from the experts.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/quake...

Great info from all over the world!

[Edited on 12-9-2006 by Cincodemayo]

Cincodemayo - 12-8-2006 at 05:20 PM

Two of the last 4 quakes were just below the surface!

Iflyfish - 12-8-2006 at 05:22 PM

Cinco,

You should have seen all of the white faces on the Mexicans standing outside of the building. There is a lot of PTSD there from that quake. The incident I wrote of happened a couple of years after the BIG ONE.

I have been in the Marina District of San Francisco California and had the same feeling during a quake. It also is built on fill. Very odd sensation.

Thanks for the current info.

Cincodemayo - 12-8-2006 at 05:27 PM

I'd take an earthquake any day over a tornado...Was in So Cal for the San Fernando, Loma Prieta and Whittier quakes. Grandma was living in San Fernando at the time...Her whole fireplace separated from the wall and collapsed with her right next to it...she was fine but it did a number on her pool! Our pool in Downey over 65 miles from there looked like there was a tsunami in it as it lost over 2 feet of water going back and forth...crazy stuff!

Karyn Ivie - 12-8-2006 at 05:27 PM

I might be wrong, but it looks to me on the map that todays quakes are more North between Tijuana and San Felipe. Click on Map near the eq description on the above linlk.

shari - 12-8-2006 at 05:28 PM

This is NOT funny....I really had to go #2 and while in the outhouse I had the crap scared out of me...literally...that one was a rumble followed by a big boom....what's next? I'll check out the info....gracias

Iflyfish - 12-8-2006 at 05:29 PM

Have you seen any more venting on the point?

It sounds like giant rocks banging together, or maybe the plates releasing. It must be right under you and it sounds like it is localized.

Iflyfish

Iflyfish - 12-8-2006 at 05:31 PM

Maybe slipping and then locking in place? Rock and roll and then Boom!

Stay safe amiga, don't forget the paper work!

I'll bet this is the first earthquake report ever from a reporter on the can. You are amazing amiga!!

Cincodemayo - 12-8-2006 at 05:33 PM

They sure seem to coincide with what Shari has been saying...:?:

Karyn Ivie - 12-8-2006 at 05:36 PM

Yes they sure do. I wish they would give a better map.

shari - 12-8-2006 at 05:36 PM

I agree that those quakes aren't the ones we feel here as we are at 27 degrees North X 114 west....the lat-longs given are up by TJ and offshore. I just don't think their equipment registers here.

Cincodemayo - 12-8-2006 at 05:44 PM

Shari...they have a "contact us" button...shoot them off an email with your findings and tell em what's shakin...

Karyn Ivie - 12-8-2006 at 05:45 PM

The map is showing 6 quakes today just east of Ensenada, but none where Shari is.:?:

Karyn Ivie - 12-8-2006 at 05:48 PM

Sorry, I was trying to paste the map, but it didn't work. Here is the link:http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/10/245_30.php

Iflyfish - 12-8-2006 at 05:53 PM

I can't get over the image of Shari's personal seismonitor!! That is really funny.

Iflyfish

Iflyfish - 12-8-2006 at 05:58 PM

Karyn,

I have been following the reports and Shari is reporting many more significant quakes than are being registered on these sites.

From what she has said before these are very localized phenomenon.

From her previous posts it would appear that the point where their house is in Asuncion is right on top of the epicenter.

Iflyfish

Shari, just stop using the crapper and maybe this will stop. Maybe a big monster in there who doesn't like it one bit that you are sacrificing in the way you are. Have you tried throwing any virgins down that hole? Used to help in the old days.

Glad I could help.

Your very brave....

Bajagypsy - 12-9-2006 at 10:39 AM

Oh Shari, I hope you are ok, what a living nightmear this must be. I think Juan is correct and you and all your furry friends (and the feathered one if you still have it), should stay out at your cabin!!!!

Tequilla helps everything, so get as much as you can, and head back to san rouque. It doesn't sound like the science guys know what is going. They say nothing major, but if your floor cracked, I would second quess them.

We are thinking of you and Juan's family, and hope that you have a good christmas dispite the turmol going on there.

Lots of love and tequila!!!

shari - 12-10-2006 at 09:42 AM

HOla amigos...this is the sunday morning report....yesterday was a very quiet mellow day with only a few noticeable rumbles. It seems after an active day, it calms down for a bit. This morning there has only been 2 pretty mild ones so far. Last night I had the guy who checks the seismic equipment over for dinner....very interesting indeed. They have installed 6 monitors which they put in differint areas to triangulate the data to try to figure out where the heck this monster, er little bugger is located (they keep telling us this is minor and normal) It seems now that the tosca abreojos fault is too far away to cause this very localized shaking and now think it is a minor fault that YES folks, runs right under our place and along the shoreline. AHA...this sounds more like it and I described all our experiences to him. We discussed the "HIVE" which is what they call this thing and he admitted that they really can't tell if it will continue, slack off or increase...they think because it's such a little fault that it won't get any worse...some think it has peaked last week and will taper off now. But nobody really knows. I don't like it one bit that Juan thinks we may have a bigger one. I am facinated by what all this has done physically and psycologically to the folks here. They have permanently installed a very cool PR guy to talk to everyone and have 2 psycologists working at the schools to deal with the kids fears. I heard stories last night of how it has made people sick...vomiting and very high blood pressure etc. Some have vowed never to return, others still don't sleep in their houses and stay with friends. The hospital is very busy. Personally there are days when my emergency pack migrates back to the bedroom but then a shaker will happen and I find myself putting it by the door again, like this morning...I have a bad feeling and got some stuff ready to run. I figure each quake weakens our house and if a little bigger one does happen, it may result in walls caving in??? I guess it's good to be a little bit prepared anyway. The PR guy has told people what to do in the event of a big one and has suggested that everyone have emergency bags ready and a plan in place. But then I think about all the cities that lie on real big faults and laugh thinking none of those people have emergency bags ready. Anyway...anyone heading our way be sure to pack an extra bottle of spirits for us! Stay tuned for the afternoon show!

Everyone should have an emergency pack---we all just tend to ignore what mother nature can do. Having experienced lots of earthquakes around California, I know that the initial quake never frayed my nerves like the aftershocks---always that feeling of OK, how bad will this one be.

Now, just in case we do make it down there, what is your preference in spirits?

A Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On!!

must make ya nuts. Hope things settle down for you guys.

see ya in September george

shari - 12-10-2006 at 10:29 AM

Thanks Dianne, hey beggars can't be choosers..any old nerve medecine will do. Rum is my personal favorite...nothin like a cuba at happy hour which sems to correspond to the quake hour too! But the tequila seems to take the edge off those BOOMS. I've also been suckin back some rescue remedy (Bach's Floral remedy)on the big ones. The emergency pack is an interesting concept...just what do ya need? Mine keeps getting bigger and my dilema is what to bring, papers, CD backuups, $$, candles, pumkin seeds, books, radio and charger, toilet paper...

Bajagypsy - 12-10-2006 at 10:34 AM

I would think I would be bringing tequila!!! You are a super strong women shari, I 'm quite sure I would be sh**ing my pants and living somewhere else!!!!

Keep us informed, as everyone is very worried about you.

shari - 12-10-2006 at 10:40 AM

Unfortunately we finished off the tequila a couple days ago but luckily a cruising couple donated a couple bottles of wine which I'm hoping to save for Chrismas unless things get crazy before then. Thanks for your concern Gypsies...oh by the way I've had some requests for prints of the picture of you guys and the fish from some of our amigos here who met you...somehow I don't think they are interested in the red viejas!!:saint:

Iflyfish - 12-10-2006 at 11:16 AM

Glad to hear psychological help is available for the kids. This sort of thing can be very traumatizing. I am impressed with the response.

See you soon.

kellychapman - 12-10-2006 at 12:04 PM

Shari, after reading all of this scary stuff and a having a friend who has property there he is concerned about...am thinking about heading your way in the near future....will bring you somethings Santa left here that has your name on it......he said you have been a very good and brave girl this year....hmmmmmm now your safety pack....omg I see that "rum" is on the top of the list.....anyway I am going to actually going to put together a list of what you really need in all seriousness...be back in a bit....

Kelly

shari - 12-10-2006 at 12:28 PM

Oh yes I have been a good girl indeed....nothing like a good catastrophe to make new friends. I can't wait to meet you...you can stay with us if you don't mind a few things that go BANG in the night(and day) I don't know anyone in Loreto and do get gas there sometimes...I'm heading there in a couple weeks too to pick up my family...it will be nice to get out of town for a couple days.

FARASHA - 12-10-2006 at 02:11 PM

Shari - you should really go and see Kelly - will be GREAT I promise you!!Lota fun around her! Wish I could be there too then, would be 3 gals having great time!!!:bounce:

kellychapman - 12-10-2006 at 02:30 PM

Shari....are you going to be here a few days prior or after you pick up your family? I have a spot for you if your by yourself.as far as comfort....but for that matter could always make room for as many as we have too. I would cook and treat you like a queen....if you can handle dogs that is....
And Strokers Reef Bar is just across the street where all the locals hang out (mostly gringos of course) so you really would meet everyone in town who probably know you as a result of this thread.
I just finished looking at your beautiful web site and need to ask....is that YOUR house on that point.....because if it is I am going to go immediatly have 3 shots of tequilla right now.....darling girl, no wonder your a mess....I had NO idea of your location and almost fainted. My place is available to you at any second if you want to leave early and wait for your family....as far as a safety pack...rocket booster installed on the back of your car...and I am not kidding.....you better take care of yourself.....my prayers are with you...

shari - 12-11-2006 at 09:32 AM

Yes that IS our place stuck out there on that rock...some crazy gringo built it years ago! My husband bought it cheap as nobody wants to live out here in "Alaska" (the locals call it that as it's windy and colder out here than in town) I love it here but it has been stressful during the earthquakes. Yesterday only 2 small ones I felt so today should perk up I figure....got my pack by the door still. Treat ME like a queen...now there's a concept....I could get into that! JUst my daughter Sirena and I will be coming and we will surely visit and check out the reefer bar???sounds swell! Can I put that rocket booster on my kayak? One other point of interest I forgot to mention is that the kids in all the schools here have moved outside...all their desks and blackboards and everything is outside...I'll try to go get a photo....the kids aren't complaining though as they only have classes for 2 and a half hours a day because they aren't allowed to go into the bathrooms at the school so get to go home....cool eh!

Earthquake in British Columbia-Dec 10/06

motoged - 12-11-2006 at 03:50 PM

Nomads,
A 3-point-something earthquake was registered just north of Penticton, British Columbia last night. We rarely get quakes in this area, but was wakened by one several years ago thinking something landed on the house.....

So, I better pack the truck and dirtbike and get south so as to enjoy the temblors in a much nicer climate...

I leave Dec 14th at early o'thirty and can hardly wait...will be in Mulege by the 19th...

Shari,
I think your place is unbelievable....I can unstand how you can love it....whether it is colder or windy then other areas....coming from Beautiful Bandon by the sea where is is always windy and cold still does not take away from the beauty. I cannot wait to have the honor of stopping by and visiting in the future....maybe I can talk Farasha to come with me when she comes out and the 2 of us will come up for some fun at your place. I just pray all goes well and your life gets back to normal very soon so you can relax. I am so glad that the services offered to help those during this event may be of some help until the crisis passes.....take care and will see you soon...

shari - 12-12-2006 at 11:33 AM

Greetings from temblorama! (Temblor means earthquake). Things are very quiet these last few days, only 4 yesterday but they take you by surprise that way and one was at bedtime which was spooky and made it hard to relax and sleep well. All night I have these shaking dreams and don't really know if they are real or what! Another interesting way the townsfolk have had to adjust is in the stores they have to put all the things in glass in crates on the floor like the liquor and food jars etc. It looks kinda weird if you don't know why they are down there. Tthe weather is superb, lovely and warm with just a light breeze but there has been a huge swell which makes loud noise at the blowhole here but is absolutely stunning to see. I hope today is a good day as it is the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe so everyone is making special food, tamales, menudo etc. I'm making mole...yummmy.
Now about this chick gathering....it's beginning to sound like a party...which I'm always up for. For our personal security why don't we use U2U to plan this little bash next week. How bout I let Kelly know when we'll be there and we can take it from there...I'd love to meet some other nomads in the Loreto area. Let's do it!

Bajalero - 12-14-2006 at 08:23 PM

Somethings weird about this whole thing Shari . You're reporting a significant # of quakes and many of them are not showing up on either the USGS site nor the situ de sismos for Mexico.

http://www.ssn.unam.mx/SSN/ssn-ultimos.html

David K - 12-15-2006 at 10:32 AM

Yes it is weird because they aren't even felt 10 miles away... Only in town and close by.

That's why I guessed volcano... or maybe GODZILLA!!?

shari - 12-16-2006 at 11:34 AM

You're telling me somethings weird here???:o uhhh yeah. So on the evening of Dec.14 just before 10:00 pm we had a fairly significant quake, not enough that stuff fell off the shelves but it was felt by all and was a long one and scared everyone and lots of folks went back out to the refuge campsite. There were 5 more throughout the night as well which upset everyone. Yesterday was completely quiet which seems to be the pattern....a few days of relative quiet then a big day, then quiet again for a bit. But there is a new development....there is a place on the salt flats at the edge of town that supposedly opened up and and spewed some sand out....different sand than that which is around...I haven't looked yet myself but will go there and try to take some photos...this has got lots of folks kinda freaked out. I don't know why these quakes don't register anywhere else, perhaps because they are too small?? Is this fault so small and local that it doesn't show up other places??? I sure would like to know as would all my compaņeros here. Any info is appreciated.

toneart - 12-16-2006 at 11:47 AM

Gawd!

Someone should camp out there on the salt flats and try to see what kind of tentacle or flipper is pushing up sand. Might be tough to find volunteers though.:o

Response to Shari's last post:

Thank you for your e-mail and update.

What you are describing is exactly what I think stated before; that this is, in fact, earthquake activity along a fault and the fact that in some cases it is venting (you used the correct term) solidifies the fact. It appears that the fault is a slow moving and hence the reason for the prolonged series of quakes. It is definitely NOT a volcano in its infancy.

Many thanks again and have a great and safe holiday season Rick !

shari - 12-17-2006 at 07:17 PM

Hola quake watchers....yesterday we had such a lovely day, only one teeny tiny boom and last night I slept through the night for the first time in 23 days. But this afternoon made up for yesterday...we had 8 quakes between 4:00 and 5:30...small to medium but still enough for people to camp in their cars tonight and me to check my emergency pack again. Lots of the locals relatives who usually come for the holidays have cancelled their visits this year...chickens! I'm happy MY family IS coming, they want to feel some of this action! Figures they're related to me:tumble: enjoy the holiday season all you baja travellers, be careful and drive very carefully.

shari - 12-19-2006 at 08:00 AM

Well although the week started off with a lovely rainbow, the shaking continues...monday we had about 15 small quakes that started in the morning and lasted all day long saving the biggest boom for about 9:00 when we were just pulling the covers up....darn cold front...

Bajagypsy - 12-19-2006 at 08:27 AM

Shari, I wish this was over for you, maybe you need to just stay in a tequila fog?!?

shari - 12-19-2006 at 08:39 AM

Well, the holidays are upon us and my family is coming to raise our "spirits" The funny thing is we are getting used to it and haven't had a real doozie for a couple weeks. Sirena thinks it's funny how I jump or grab my chair or her arm and sqeal a bit depending how big the boom is...but I don't run outside anymore but still keep the emergency pack by the door. It's cold here today with a large swell and even sprinkled a bit this morning...I mention this so you feel better about your -40 weather!! Has your tan faded yet?? Love to all of you

Bajagypsy - 12-19-2006 at 10:46 AM

I'm so glad your family is going to be there with/for you, and I'm also glad that you aren't running out the door at every boom.

Yes the tan is fading , but that's ok, hopefully we will be down at the end of April begining of May, I'll get it back then:biggrin:
