I was just reacting to what you were saying Ken... Just how many places tougher than Mision Santa Maria do you need to go to? The Jeep is no good if it breaks, right? I am surprised Neal let's you keep it! LOL

Have fun Ken... You know I love Jeeps (for their historic contributions to four wheeling... they started it)! I owned a Jeep, my dad owned Jeeps... We first traveled to Baja in a Jeep!

VIVA JEEP!

Hey Slim, that web address is goofy. There is no .jpg and an @ is for email address.

Try right click on the image and highlight and copy the address in the properties box.

When you need to air up a tire?

Just bring some lighter fluid, works great. Gas if your really in a bind.

I like to drive with my tire pressure at around 11 p.s.i. This makes the Viair good to have on board.

Here's a few places I like to take my Daily Driver/Fun Baja Runner...

Rosarito Beach -- I ran portions of this obstacle course. If I had a pickup, I'd see myself bobbing the bed and I wouldn't get much utility from the longer wheelbase vehicle

Modified 4 Runner built for fun in Baja:

Fun like this is difficult in a pickup truck setup for "Loney Baja"-type Travel:

Do you see what I mean?? :light:

So, the Jeep is just to do silly but fun stuff in a closed course, once a year or so... kind of like off road racing?

A 4WD truck or SUV is to GET SOMEWHERE, have fun, over and over again...

It's okay if the racer (or rock climber) breaks, because it was just for some short time fun event. When it breaks, you just load onto your trailer behind your TRUCK, and tow it home!

I am alarmed only when you say you can't do the next fun Baja trip because you broke something on your last Baja trip... You need a reliable vehicle to take you anywhere in Baja, when you want to go!

We are counting on you to go to Baja (and take photos) Ken! FEED THE NOMADS! :light::lol::lol::lol:

Merry Christmas Ken!

If I wanted to, I could load up my Jeep and drive to Cabo and back. The rear disc brakes need servicing, but I could get that done in La Paz. Otherwise, the Jeep is fit and ready to drive.

Its just the bumper that poses the biggest risk. Not to me, but to other drivers following from behind. :o

I'm getting the bumper repaired Friday morning, and next it will be the rear disc brakes (100,000 miles on ORIGINAL PARTS), and a visit to Home Depot for the airtank parts.

As far as a Baja vehicle, I would prefer a DISCOUNT PRICED Unlimited Rubicon with Dana 44s, 4:1 RocTrac Transfer case, ELECTRIC LOCKERS FRONT&REAR, selectable front SWAYBAR DISCONNECT, and a MODULAR removable hard top along with a STRAIGHT FRONT AXLE for roughly $30,000.00

How much TOYOTA TACOMA would $30,000.00 buy???

No breakdowns, and my 100,000 mile '03 1/2 is still going strong, and yes, I PLAY WITH IT ON ROCKS. :o:O:yes:

This old '66 beauty had a name and it was Betsy. Along with that side door Cabover Camper we traveled up and down Baja when I was in my early 20's. I replaced the camper with a small Class A Motorhome and the truck with a newer Chevy Crew Cab

rr66DodgeCrewCab.JPG - 43kB

BajaWarrior - 12-25-2008 at 11:51 PM

Next up was an '87 Chevy Crew Cab one ton. This damn thing went through two transmissions in under 50,000 Miles. I owned it for about 5 years. This photo was taken a Rancho Percebu below San Felipe around '88

This was a really good truck, it did well on the rough road to La Bocana de Santo Tomas when I built a house out there in the early '90's.

Next up, my favorite of all my trucks... 99 Super Duty. No problems ever, it's name was El General. Recently sold.

Most recent Baja rig is my new/used '06 Super Duty Lariat Diesel 350. Great truck and it's used to Baja already and tows a mean load. Haven't named it yet, maybe BadBoy1...

David, that's an interesting picture. Joe and Sandra went on Baja Grande this year, and with their stock 4WD Tacoma pickup were afraid to take it along this stretch of 4WD trail. They have a pop up camper in the bed, and wimpy 28 or 29" street-biased tires and no suspension lift. With the modifications you made on your Tacoma, was it also lifted to run those 32" tires you have? Under Joes Tacoma, it looked like ABSOLUTELY no additional tire upgrades could be made unless there was a suspension lift, and I thought HOW WIMPY.

David K - 12-27-2008 at 01:20 PM

Ken, you know better than that!

NO MODS... It had factory suspension, factory size tires (265/70-16)... IT IS A 'TRD' TOYOTA, so none needed to get to the mission and out... It is my third time in there... the last 2 in Tacomas... See photos in my web site. Neal Johns has been in there with his Tacoma too... Fishunter, as well... Roy in his LR3 Land Rover... I have seen stock Jeep Cherokees in there too.

LONG AFTER that trip, I added the air bags and better shocks to halt the bottoming out issue when loaded... NOT for ground clearance... The 9.5 inches of stock clearance is fine.

:spingrin::tumble::biggrin:

IT is all about not being stupid when driving, good tire placement, keeping it in 4WD (duh!), engage the low range in the steep sections, and use of a rear locker for the Widowmaker climb, as seen in that photo (if so equiped).

http://vivabaja.com/403 for my stock '01 Tacoma going to 'Mission Impossible'.

I wouldn't trade my Jeep for a new TRD Tacoma

Know better than what? Joes Tacoma didn't have the TRD decals on his vehicle, but it did have the rear locker I believe.

I wouldn't ask the question if I already knew the answer. I just want to know if the Tacoma has two different lift heights? With his 28" tires, there was very little space for additional tire to fit. The tread wasn't very aggressive either, and aired down, I doubt would be enough clearance to get his Tacoma in and out of the Mission - let alone through the swamp.

I believe a stock Tacoma can tackle Baja Grande. A stock 4Runner did it last year. I wanted to know if the TRD package only included the rear locker and cheepo-level Bilstein shocks, and the regular 4WD Tacoma had a different lift height.

:O Some Pole Line Road hightlights from the past 5 years... :o

David K - 12-27-2008 at 06:36 PM

I thought from all my posts and trip reports and your personal observations, that you knew my truck wasn't 'modified' or has oversize tires...

It was after the July trip to 7 sisters, Asuncion and Mulege that I swapped the stock (yellow) Bilsteins for the 5100s (in back only) and had the Ride Rite air bags installed (all at ORW)... soley for the bottoming issue with the soft rear springs... without making the ride too hard (adjustable air bags).

The TRD package has the locking rear differential... and some do remove the stickers.

Reliability is the key to Baja travel... Not to say something can't happen to a Toyota... Neal Johns has even broke his Tacoma in Baja! Of course, Neal takes his EVERYWHERE... !!

Just the odds are that U.S. brand mid to small trucks and SUVs don't seem to hold up to the Toyota brand name. FULL SIZE trucks are a different matter... The Dodge and Ford owners here seem to really love their big trucks. Oh, the one Chevy truck owner I know loves his, too.

[Edited on 12-28-2008 by David K]

Ken Cooke - 12-27-2008 at 08:44 PM

Well, I hated my mid-size Ford pickup. The thing was a waste of money. My neighbor has it now, and it is reliable for him, but he never takes the thing off road.

As for me, I would make the jump to a full-size pickup if I needed the carrying capacity, but an Unlimited Rubicon would be my next step up in size if cost was no object.

El Boogie Rojo

Fourteen years now in Baja...it's been beat on washboard, burned up,

and somehow brought back to life. All the electrical was replaced from one spool of black wire, and it only has one partially functioning brake, but it's still going strong:

I'm looking forward to actually have time to restore it (again).

BigWooo------My brother-in-law and sister had a Manx break in two during a huricane near Guerro Negro on a trip to Cabo on the old dirt road way back when, before the pavement-----------stranded in GN for 3 days having it welded back together. It was a fun machine, tho, when operative.

I'm not sure I could handle driving to Cabo in one, but we've had a great time with this car. That would have been an adventure though.

Sharksbaja - 12-29-2008 at 05:29 PM

Hey Barry, I never even knew GN really existed until after the hiway was laid west of El Arco. I remember the brand new La Pinta/ El Presidente and gas station but never looked around there much. Was the town there and I missed it?

Don't know the status of the town of GN then, but I am reporting what my B_IN_LAW told me, and he had pictures. I think it was just before the road was paved---certainly not after. Maybe it wasn't a town----just a "stop" along the way, with some mechanics??? Don't really know. He broke the Manx by taking a flooded vado (wash) too fast-----thank goodness he had a British Land Rover along with him or he would have froze to death----the land rover hauled him out of the vado, and into GN--------he said it was really cold, and everything was flooded for miles.

Wow, that is truly great!!! My Nissan "Off-Road" X-terra was soft in the rear, but Nissan would not do anything about it----ended up spending quite a bit for the Calmini double add-a-leaf pack, and that sure cured the problem.

Your experience was much better, tho.

The "commando", soon to be absorbed into the Baja environment.....

Can you believe that I would trade the Jeep for a Toyota?........dt

David K - 6-12-2009 at 01:16 PM

dt's Wagoneer photo reminded me that our first Baja rig was a white Jeep Wagoneer... The family Baja vehicle was #1 for us!

My dad owned 2 Wagoneers... First one (1965) was great, the second one (1970) was no good... traded it for a 1972 4WD Suburban... that had engine problems from the start... got a '73 Ford wagon that was perfect and lasted him the rest of his life ('till 1989).

My first Baja vehicle (1973) was a Myers Manx VW buggy... my second was a '75.5 Jeep Cherokee Chief... loved it when it ran, had numerous failures... Sold it and got a '77.5 Subaru 4WD Wagon... That little car was amazing... Had three of them over several years...

Casey67 - 1-6-2010 at 09:42 PM

Here's mine, Finnegan, a 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara. It's never been to the Baja but we leave in 5 days, for 5 months of sunshine! If the Baja chews it up and spits it out it's a just a trade-in on a new Toyota :)

I added Nomad stickers, lifted to 10 inches of ground clearance, 29.5" tires, upgraded suspension and airlift 1000 air bags to help with the load of camping gear. Coming soon to a fish taco stand near you.

Pulp Fiction. Spoken by Butch (Bruce Willis) in reference to the recently deceased owner of a chopper. Here's my favorite line from that movie:

"Just because you are a character doesn't mean that you have character."

grace59 - 1-7-2010 at 07:26 PM

Wish that I had photos, but I've never learned to post them...oh well, My rig is a Voodoo Blue 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser with all the bells and whistes...rock rails, skid plates, roof rack, inclinometer etc....I added my Baja Nomad sticker and "The lower the Latitude, The better the Attitude" license plate frame....I call him B.O.B. which stands, of course, for Baja or Bust!
My husband has a 2001 Jeep which he fortified with a 4 inch lift kit and 33 inch tires....I have dubbed him A.L.....or Alto Loco...Spanish for "Crazy Tall"....I can't even climb into the darn thing without a step ladder

One of the problems with message boards, humor doesn't always come through. The author himself said it was an ugly truck and I was reminded of earlier threads about "pizza" trucks, which I thought was funny. I'm all for old Fords in Baja, drive one myself. Lots of parts, they're known to mechanics, low profile, no great loss if they're banged up, wrecked or stolen, etc. etc. I'm from the "car repairs are better than car payments" school of thought. Heck, mine still has the wrong sized (too small, but the only one immediately available) used alternator a mechanic in Ciudad Constitucion spliced in three years ago. The taped up wires are doing just fine.

Long live old Fords!!

96 12v Dodge Diesel. Far, far from stock. Runs on WVO. I can go almost 2000 miles and never touch a gas station.

2010 Tundra 4x4 with BFG KOs, campershell and roof rack.

No name yet... has to get a bit more beat / survive some more Baja challenges before a name seems right...

2000 miles????? How big is the tank? Did you add an extra?

turtleandtoad - 1-14-2011 at 01:56 PM

2006 Toyota Tacoma Crewcab 4X4 with the full O/R package, including full skid plate, Bilstein Shocks, Lockers, oversize tires, and 12 VDC/120 VAC Inverter (to run air compressor after airing down the tures).

Its name most of the time is 'taco' (of course) but since it spends half it's time being towed behind my Class A, the name changes to 'toad' when hooked up. License plate says 'MYTOAD'. Wife wants a window sticker that says 'I go where I'm toad'

Baja12valve - 1-14-2011 at 02:21 PM

My veg tank is 50 gallons, my regular tank, usually filled with homemade biodiesel, is 30, add extra 45 in 3 @ 15 gallon tanks and I am good to go. Actually 2000 is easy, always get a few hundred over that.
How do you post a picture? Nowhere on this screen do I see any prompts. If I go to "edit" on my earlier post, I can "choose file", but the next screen shows nothing more than "edit" or "preview post". I do not see anything where I can post or upload. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

My favorite Baja rig is one I just call "The Beast". A basic, older F250 4x4 with manual transmission, HD suspension including front leaf springs, lockers and a 5.8L that just goes and goes and goes. Here is a photo of The Beast with my good friend Duro taken back in November when we were out trying to find Mike and Don-Kay.

I have pulled more than a couple of Toyotas out of the sand with this one but who's counting...

Should be ashamed of yourself letting that little kid drive!

Fez? What...he's a good driver! And a Mexican to boot!

Flippac

ddawson - 1-25-2011 at 10:46 AM

I drive a Nissan Frontier with a Flippac. It works pretty well! She doesn't have a name yet. She has taken me all over Baja and loves to get dirty. She even occasionally makes my girlfriend jealous as I often pay her more attention than my gf!

Here are a few pics of her in recent trips:

Catavina:

Balandra:

Camping in Loreto Shores RV Park:

I have a lot of other pics, but they aren't in my photobucket. I'll have to search and upload more.

GrOUper-GAr - 1-25-2011 at 03:52 PM

I agree I have had several newer ones but my all time favorite was my 81 F250 4x4 with a 4 speed and the straight 6. It took me everywhere and I couldn't kill it.

The bumper I have is a Calmini. It's ok, but I had originally wanted an ARB. This one popped up and the cost was such that I couldn't pass it up. It has worked well for me so far. I just feel that if I were to hit a cow in the middle of the night an ARB would serve me better. If you want a prerunner bumper, I would have one custom made. There are many good shops in socal, and they're not too expensive.

If you are seriously considering building your 2nd gen, I would check out the race-dezert forum. There is a LOT of info over there. The 2nd gens have many more parts and options if you're going to build it. There is also a classifieds section where Nissan parts periodically pop up.
