Yup, was in Lomas! If you know your street names....I went up as high as Palo de Arco & between 21st & 13th. This isn't going to be a bad enough storm to lose too much sleep over...as long as your contracter compacted the soil well & did a decent construction job! Since that's all hillside, all the water is washing down to the hwy. And even if it does hit Cat 2, I usually don't bother to tape the windows until a Cat 3 is predicted! If you can tell me exactly where you place is, I'd be happy to check on it & let you know how it looks...right after the storm passes! If you have contact info for any of your Lomas neighbors who live here or are here now that'd work too, but if not....I can check for you! U2U me if you want rather than clogging up the thread.

Up here in Montana my thoughts are with all of you down there. Part of me wishes I were there and going through it all with you, but I know it is my nature to be able to deal with almost anything AFTER it has happened. The wondering how bad it can get is what I can't deal with. So I hope you all stay safe, and I'll just keep putting out calm vibes and hope the storm is hearing me!

Hi there,

can someone with a dig video camera video this image loop of NOAA when the eye of Henriette gets closest to Loreto?

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t7/sloop-ir4.html

with or without the predicted path overlaid but without the lat long overlay. i wanna keep a copy of it for our memorias of why we had to cut our vacation short

canīt save the page the only thing that works to save the loop is to video it. I can only get as close as 6 feet or so to maintain focus. this page has very cool loops and images this main page is at:

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/trop-epac.html

and the henriette page is reached from this or directly at
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/float7.html

locking up office and covering everything, shopped and signing off now.

thanks :)

Bob H - 9-4-2007 at 11:34 AM

Great images Bill! The best of luck to everyone down there. As soon as this makes shore it will take a lot out of it, windwise. But the rain could be what could cause some problems. Take cover and ride this one out. It's a small one and thank goodness for that!

Russ, do you have any idea what the tides will be like when she arrives, if and when she does. Could make a huge difference for many.

oxxo - 9-4-2007 at 12:49 PM

1330, LosCabos

Just took a final look around outside. It is becoming unsafe out there. Debris starting to blow around. Wind gusts knocked me off my feet. Rain being blown horizontal. Wind gusts to 70 or 80 knots. Windows are whistling and flexing. Wind makes a roaring sound outside. Surf starting to be blown flat. This is the real deal, a Cat 1. Wind is blowing from the East which means we are in the most dangerous northeast quadrant of the storm. The eye is supposed to pass directly overhead in about three hours. After the eye passes I expect the winds to clock around to the West.

The turtle hatching pen is dry and okay right now but the surf is just reaching the edge of the pen. If we can make it another hour, I think it will be okay.

I lost my primary internet connection about 2 hours ago and I am on a backup system now. We'll see how long this one lasts. Power goes on and off intermittently.

We have some minor leaks but no damage or flooding in the area yet. All my neighbors, gavachos and Mexicans, are calm, controlled, and not doing anything foolish. But this is getting interesting. Heads up La Pa', start battening down the hatches!

I think I'll go pop another Pacifico and contemplate the situation.

Suerte

oldlady - 9-4-2007 at 12:54 PM

Raining hard in the La Paz area..wind not too bad...think I'll "contemplate too....hope the eggs make it through!

1430, Los Cabos

OMG, I believe we're in the eye of the storm right now! No wind, no rain, and the sky is very bright, but no sun. I think it must have picked up speed. I just took a walk around outside and we have some broken tree limbs and some damaged planter pots and light fixtures. Nothing major.

Well it is starting to rain again and the wind is very light from the west. The calm lasted about 20 to 25 min. I think the worst of it will be over by 7 or 8 this evening. We are now on the backside of the storm. I think we caught just the easterly edge of the eye.

My best guess is that the center of storm passed just westerly offshore from San Lucas, maybe 5 or 10 miles out. I expect that Todos is taking the brunt of it right now.

High tide has now passed and the turtle eggs have survived. Ahhhhh, life is good!

Suerte, Todos Santos compadres.

Cypress - 9-4-2007 at 01:50 PM

oxxo Glad you and the turtle eggs made it thru the front half of the storm.:D The back side shouldn't be too bad.:D

fdt - 9-4-2007 at 01:51 PM

Me again, as I posted earlier, we are transmitting right now, just music but to be ready in case someone needs to get a message across or in case of any emergency. Doug brought up a good point, and it is of was how to know when to tune in for a live broadcast or to pt someone on air, well, you can post it or U2U me and we will be on.
If there is anything we can help with with the radio in communicating, please feel free to use it.

Wind is picking up a bit but nothing dramatic in Todos Santos, yet...
Talked to somebody on the beach here and the wind was much stronger there. Amazing how a couple of miles can make such a big difference...
The sky is grey, but there hasn't been any rain for a couple of hours now.

She hasn't gone past us yet, we are in Buena Vista. The seas are very rough, winds are strong, plenty of rain. From the numbers that we have seen think it's about another 3-4 hours for her to pass us. It's getting very, nasty here.....Hang on everyone this one is nasty, more than they were talking about. She' got plenty of water not a good thing.

BTW,
Cabo radar images are all out of date by several hours, and although Guasave Sinaloa radar is up to date, it isn't reaching out to the peninsula.
"Almost Live Cabo weather" is down;
"Almost Live La Paz Weather" is up, but doesn't look accurate.
Both Cabo airport and La Paz airport weather reports are shut down.

Any other real time reporting out there?

BCSTech,
The current Cabo radar image I am seeing is dated 9/4/07, 19:40:35. Subtract 6 hours for La Paz time. They stopped updating at 1:40 PM, apparently, unless you have a different source than I do.

Sharks what makes you think its not going up the SOC.:?::?::?:

Sharksbaja - 9-4-2007 at 05:50 PM

If the storm tracked, say along the mainland or up the middle of the gulf then I figure more water would be theoretically pushed in front of it rather than by it crossing land and emerging back on to an area uptonow not affected by rising seas. I'm taking about La Paz in particular. If the storm does stays over the land it will do just what John did, dump it's load of water. I worry more about that whole stretch between La Paz and Loreto more than anywhere else.
The mountains there are such a magnet for moisture. THe arroyos have shown what created them. Don't stay or cross any arroyo during intense rainfall. As was seen last year the whole desert is awash in places. Were talkin' VW size rocks and the force to carve out a new landscape. I'm glad the new bridges are in place near Mulege. It shows the great hindsight Mexicans impress me with. That and their urgency to get help fast to those who need it. I heard stories of folks out there repairing washouts stone by stone just hours after the flood. I wish we would all learn a great lesson from all that happened. I'm confident strangers will help strangers as well if needed. Afterall, it is Baja.

My thinking is all the tropical flow that Henriette is spewing of is going over northern Mexico, whatever is pulling that will affect the storm track. With this scenario the storm would come up the east coast of the Baja short of Loreto and head to the mainland, you like that.:lol::lol:

Yes, Alan, power has been out for a few hours. I'm on an external power supply for the satellite modem so I got offline for awhile. It's getting dark quickly so we're getting the candles out...

The wind has been blowing hard but hardly any rain. Cannot see the ocean as before. It feels like a typical winter day on the Oregon coast, even the temperature dropped quite a bit when the wind started. The wind was blowing from the northwest at first, but now it is coming more from the south.
Occasional wind howling and whistling feels like a great show of nature, except we're thinking of the folks on the Cortez side and none of this must be amusing to them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you who are getting battered two years in a row...

Batten down the hatches...

Mexray - 9-4-2007 at 06:32 PM

...it's going to be a bumpy ride!

I see the sat images show the storm moving right up and over La Paz...with the pockets of heavy rain reaching up the East coast of Baja, and coating the mountains inland...

I sure hope those in the danger zone in Mulege are getting their stuff together for the possibility of a quick move to high ground if the current storm path continues!

Can't believe it's only been one year since the last 'high water' through town...let's hope for the best!

Bob and Susan...sure hope there's lots of concrete under your new light house...if this storm were to really blow through the Bahia, you may have Baja's newest tourist attraction...'The Leaning Tower de Concepcion'...:)

All you Nomad's stay safe down there!

Not bad in the La Paz area. Some wind, but not much rain at all. I took Comitan's advice and just cracked my second Ballena, so I must be getting the hang of this weather-watcher detail.

Are you joking?

I certainly wouldn't consider "great hindsight" a compliment.

Any bridge out there in nowhereville is an achievement given the limited resources. I suppose I could rephrase that to say
Quote:

I'm glad the new bridges are in place near Mulege. It shows the impressive ingenuity rural Mexicanos have learned from experience"

Is that ok?

Cervisin - 9-4-2007 at 07:43 PM

I think there will be some more on beach until that storm is over, could see some been moving from there original position, walk by every day, roughly know where the sit

Thanks for the Updates!!

lindsay - 9-4-2007 at 08:29 PM

Thanks everyone for posting updates here...I just talked with my daughter's Mexican relatives in Mulege and of course, they are all anxious about the hurricane's path after what they experienced last year.

So, right now everyone is getting ready and hoping it will not be a bad one. Other relatives in Los Cabos and La Paz are doing fine and they reported a lot of rain and wind so all my best wishes to everyone in southern BC...my thoughts are with you!!

wakemall - 9-4-2007 at 08:49 PM

"Thank you" Bill for the great pictures of Loreto. I will not be back down to my casa until December.

any reports from la riberra/buena vista, los barilles

oxxo - 9-4-2007 at 09:18 PM

2200, Los Cabos

We lost power about 1500 AFTER the eye had passed! Power was off for about 4 hours. The eye passed right over the top of us. Since 1400 the winds have moderated considerably and just a light rain. I would say the wind is about 30 to 40 knots from the West. The surf is starting to lay down. There is a lot of chop, but no big breakers. Very little damage around here and only mild flooding.

Cold Pizza and warm Pacifico for dinner....now that's living!

I believe Judy and the folks in Playita are probably cut off right now. I'm sure the road out there has washed out (as usual) and they are probably without power. But I KNOW she is fine. The storm was nasty, but not devasting. I have been to her place and she will have some palapa damage, but the main house is strong.

It will be a couple of days before I can get out there to see what's left of the new marina.

My first hurricane...no big deal. But I don't want to see a Cat 2 or more! Clean up starts tomorrow morning. Nite all.

I spoke to Mija on the phone and she told me that it was"no big deal MOM!" Just a lot of wind and rain. Then my ninieta grabbed the phone and said"aye! Nana, mucho rain!" Darn cute, and can speak both languages at 3 yrs. old. They battened up , bagged the doors, but forgot to get ice for the ice chest.Hope everyone else is as lucky and that you all don't get hit too hard. Some rain is very good....:) (oh, yeah, mija lives in ,or way above, Cabo)Don't forget to get your icechest filled! No power as of yet in Cabo . 9 PM

Thanks for all the great posts throughout the day. As a new member and a owner of a new casa, it is great to have the Nomads out there. Any reports from T.S. would be greatly appreciated up here in the Northwest.

Santiago / Agua Caliente area

frizkie - 9-5-2007 at 12:09 AM

Does anyone have any idea of what may have happened around this area? There was some mention of a lot of rain up near the mountains near East Cape.
I have faith that my new casa in El Chorro is okay since it was built like a brick s--t house, but with alot of water it would have perhaps ruined that beautiful new swimming hole that Hurricane Juan made for us last year...or maybe even improved it.
Hope my gardens are enjoying it...:o..or maybe not. Just don't know at this point if my cup is half empty or half full.

Thanks for all the great reporting everyone. Nomads are so great at a time like this!!!

Hope you faired okay Judy. And everyone else out there in Henrietta's path.

longlegsinlapaz - 9-5-2007 at 01:14 AM

Centenario lost power....think it was around 8 PM....somehow I slept until about 1 AM....power was back when I awoke to "impressive" wind gusts! No rain now, but from the sound of it, these are the strongest winds so far! Power appears to be back to it's usual unstable level...lotsa flickers & chirping from the battery backup. Too dark to see much outside, but my 7' potted ficus has blown over in the past 10 minutes, and from the direction it fell, I'm going to assume we're getting the backside of the eye, now along with a lot of rain sounds which just started again. Despite the malecon pictures, all in all, a relatively mild hurricane....THUS FAR....THANKFULLY! Daylight may prove interesting!

FARASHA - 9-5-2007 at 01:22 AM

Glad to hear that u made it fairly unharmed in La Paz area - Longleg!!! Anything from Cabo Pulmo Area ?? Anything how OSPREY had faired?

Loreto 3.45

Wind from the north. Est. roughly 50 mph. Heavy rain, but nothing unmanageble. Seems like it's going to miss us head-on and is on it's way by. So,people north of us, don't worry, the worst is over.

Anyone with pics of the Los Barriles Area?

Eli - 9-5-2007 at 05:45 AM

You know, I have been following this thread closely, So
Thanks HUGELY to everyone who posted their reports here, it has been of great value to me tracking from so far South.

As with Sally, I have a daughter down there that if I could get thru a call to her about now would assure me that it was just a little rain and wind, no big deal Mom, geez, what are you worried about, everything is just fine. Kid's are like that with their Mom's.

So, be that as it may, it is great to get a full house of perspectives from Nomads. Still, I am noting a loud silence from Baja Judy's and North up the East Cape; which tells me they were hit suffiecent and power must be out and the folks there are more focused in dealing with Henrietta than talking about her, which says a lot to me.

I fly to Mexico City in a few hours, and won't have the internet access there that I do here. Although, I am sure they are fine and dealing with a mess, I sure Hope to hear something of Los Barriles before I go.

You gotta love this place. Hurricane and earthquake simultaneously. You do get a big bang for your buck in baja. Glad to hear of everyone who fared well, as did we.
You're right Eli, let's get the power back on down South and hear from Judy & Co!

I'm thinking the power must still be down in TS. The last I heard was at 8:30pm
yesterday when they had a brief period of power back on... wrk said the wind was
howling but no more rain. She thought they had lost one palm and a few cacti... that was in Las Brisas.
