Give me a break. There is NOTHING better than this beer!

Erdinger is very good, no doubt. But you have not lived until you have had on-tap Paulaner at their restaurant in Munchen. Preferably the dunkel.

Truth is, Germany is beer heaven. And Bavaria is the highest form of that. Best beer in the world.

Oh, I have been there, done that.... and also some other great German brews... Julius Echter, Schofferhofer, and Maisel's Weisse hefewizen bier! All, very god stuff. I could name many more. Love this stuff!

Thanks for the bump - always plenty of discussion and viewpoints. I think I'm stickin with Pacifico, but will keep an eye out for Dortmunder Union and some of the others to try. And thanks to the video I will now be able to impress my friends when I pour them a beer (I'll do the inverted glass technique).

I will readily agree with the generalization made about German and Bavarian beer. But to single out a single beer or a single style (e.g. Hefeweizen) is purely individual taste. That one is way more than halfway down my list.

And any beer with a fruit in it is a ... uh,... I dunno, a fruity beer. <g>

In the Inns of small German towns, you can drink whatever local lager is flowing from their taps and just seem to all be great.

In Baja I tend to go for Negro Modelo, or on a hot afternoon, a Pacifico (or 3).

BajaBlanca - 4-10-2011 at 03:27 PM

wow ...lots of info here. I drank a beer with apple in it in Poland - one of the most refreshing drinks I have ever had..

by the way - the Pacifico does NOT have a tasting area at the brewery in MAZATLAN..... we went by and were disappointed .....

Why ANYone would think to stuff a fruit into a beer before the courtesy of asking is absolutely beyond me. 'Course in the case of Corona, I don't care 'cause they're not opening it for me.

I resent if they open the bottle with lime juice on their hands. I'll send that one back every time.

AmoPescar - 4-10-2011 at 04:35 PM

SO MANY GOOD BEERS TO CHOOSE FROM....

But...PACIFICO is definitely one of my favorites, especially when it comes to Mexican beers. One of my other favorites from Mexico is the DOS EQUIS AMBER LAGER. However, to really enjoy it's taste, it should be served in a chilled beer glass.

As for other beers....I live in San Diego County which is a MECCA for small craft Breweries! There's Stone, Port Brewing, Firehouse, Green Flash and many more, most of who have won many medals in national brewing contests. There's so many good ones to try that it's almodt impossible to try them all.

Nationally....there's also so many good beers being brewed by smaller breweries! When I go to Bev Mo or the Grocery store I like to try new things.

One very good one I tried recently was 'SUNSET WHEAT' from a brewery in Wisconsin called 'Leinenkugl.' It reminded me of a Hefeweizen with a squeeze of lemon.

No more Beer Garden?? I'm in shock. I wonder how long it's been gone?

Thanks Blanca.

Good point! Hefeweizen beer is one kind of taste that I like, but I cannot have too many of them in one sitting. It's pretty filling stuff and is not necessairly tied to Bavaria, but available all over Germany. And, very popular.

In the Bonn, Germany region, I prefer a lighter beer ... a Kolsch beer (two dots over the o in kolsch) This particular beer is poured into a small, thin, ice cold glass and sipped. Very good stuff, indeed!

Marc - 4-10-2011 at 06:00 PM

Tecate

Yeah. That's the way I feel about Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Oh wait... you meant.... <g>

Roberto - 4-10-2011 at 07:40 PM

Barbarosa, you are referring to Berliner Weisse. That is, indeed served with fruit syrup. Bavarian Hefeweizen has no fruit and is a totally different drink. Some things are too important not to get right!

As far as Mexican beer goes:

1. Bohemia Obscura
2. Bohemia Clara
3. Dos Equis
4. Pacifico

[Edited on 4-11-2011 by Roberto]

805gregg - 4-10-2011 at 07:58 PM

Pacifico always gives me the runs, I like local beers Anacapa Pierpont IPA is good. Mexico needs micro brews to offer some more options.

surfdoc - 4-10-2011 at 08:37 PM

Tecate Rojo .......Nada mas.

It is true there is no beer garden. However, if you take the free tour of the facility they do provide you with 2-3 beers at the end in their bar/museum. The bar sits at the very top (12 stories up) of the facility and has fantastic views of the harbor on one side, and the ocean on the other.

slimshady - 4-10-2011 at 10:32 PM

Nothing is smoother than an ice cold Pacifico with a lime wedge on a hot day. By the way doesn't corona have pee in it?

Just to clarify (I agree; let's get it right!), I didn't mean a beer with fruit in it (tho I betcha there such). I meant beer that folks *PUT* beer in. (Condemns the beer all the same.)

http://www.fermentarium.com/homebrewing/brewing-beer/how-to-...

From that link:
"Lately it seems Hefeweizen is the new beer playground for fruit."

Yes. I know it's true. I read it on the internet.

Marc - 4-11-2011 at 06:42 AM

Isn't Corona and Pacifico the same beer brewed by the same brewery??

Cypress - 4-11-2011 at 07:05 AM

In the US I drink Natural Lights. They're cheap, but good.

Same distributor...different brewery. Pacifico is made in Mazatlán and I have no idea about Corona....possibly Monterey.
Definitely different brews.

Bajahowodd - 4-11-2011 at 04:13 PM

Partially correct. Grupo Modelo sells a number of beer brands, including Pacifico, Modelo and Corona. Although at one time, each of their brands were distinct and separately owned, today, they are brewed in virtually any of the breweries that Modelo controls.

That may be so, but Pacifico and Corona are positively not the same brew. They're not made in the same vats at the same time or with the same ingredients and process. (Nor Modelo, tho I'm not very familiar with their lager.) To say they're made in the same facility isn't really saying much.

Bajahowodd - 4-11-2011 at 05:37 PM

Just saying that with the mass consolidation of companies, the beers you mention are no longer brewed in a single local brewery. Hence, the Budweiser brewey in Van Nuys produces Kirin for the Japonese brewer. Imported? No way.

That said, Femsa (Coca Cola and Oxxo, among other things), just last year sold off their beer business to Heineken. So, a number of so-called Mexican beers, such as Tecate and Bohemia (and many others) are now controled by Heineken.

So, with the exception of local specilty brewers, most of the beer in the entire world is produced by a handful of conglomerates.

Even then, for those of you who are fans of the Boston Beer Company and the Samuel Adams bunch, the truth is that outside of the home office, where they actually work on designing product, all of the Sam Adams beers you may buy are produced under contract at breweries all over the country.

ANYBODY

MrBillM - 4-11-2011 at 05:59 PM

Whose stated opinion indicates a preference for "Light" Beer should not be taken seriously.

For that matter, those who FREEZE their Beer show no taste, either.

One of the few thoughts I share with a Good German friend is his oft-repeated complaint that "Americans" ruin Beer by getting it too cold.

mcfez - 4-11-2011 at 06:03 PM

Number 1 beer in the clubs were Bud long necks. Hands down. We always had the beers in ice water bins.

With all the responses here....maybe I should reopen in Baja ;D

Perfect Timing

MrBillM - 4-11-2011 at 06:23 PM

As I sit her sipping A Heineken reading the print on the bottle.

"Serve at 40-45 Degrees F".

During the Winter in Baja, I don't even refrigerate the Beer. Which, sometimes, draws a Q from a guest. But, they never turn it down.

Well, that's a mouthful. When Lowenbrau sold the US label to one of the US companies, it became swill (not just brewed here). My bet is that if Kirin is brewed here, it's not what it was. (No recent experience.) Ditto Killian's Red. What a flockin joke. A Coors is a Coors is a Coors.

But I say you're wrong about most of the craft brews. I think you are exactly right about Fat Tire. Something (terrible) happened when they went national. They no doubt did give away the product and now it sucks. But Sam Adams? Really? I can tell you categorically that is not true of most of the real craft beers. Not Sierra Nevada; not Anchor (Steam); not any of 'em that I drink.

I love IPAs. Pacifico is kind of my everyday beer up here but I splurge a couple times a week for and Alesmith X or IPA or sometimes an Arrogant Bastard.
For a mellower IPA the Ranger IPA from New Belgium brewing is pretty damn tasty.

Why wait? I'm sure KT would love the brewing equipment in the kitchen. Well, maybe not, but she may like the product.

Home brewing can be really easy. Especially beers like ales. Stay away from secondray fermentation, like lagers. I love ales, porters, etc.

I remember the first time in Bahia, with our popup camper. Stayed at La Gringa in July!!!! Hot Hot Hot! I forget his name, but there was a man who live in the bay, in one of the northern corners, that came by to collect the fees. I negotiated for some dark ale for some of the days, and I remember the stunned look on his face when he tasted it.

Brewing is fun, can be real easy depending on the type, and waaaayyyy better than what you buy in the store.

Paulina - 4-11-2011 at 10:39 PM

Roberto,

Your first time in Bahia, that must have been a few ages ago.

I love the IPA too. Right now I'm enjoying a Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA.

I'm thinking that Soulpatch should follow Roberto's advice. Why wait? Start now and I'll be happy to sample the goods.

Saludos,

elgatoloco - 4-11-2011 at 10:50 PM

My bro-in-law home brews and his specialty is IPA. He was here tonight for wife's pork ribs, sopa frita, black beans and fried platanos and he brought a 60 minute IPA that was delish. If you have more then two pints you best not drive. :saint:

Paulina - 4-12-2011 at 05:16 PM

Soulpatch,

Will you deliver to Bahia, say in August?

Let's do it! We'll get the stuff, including the ingredients to make the first batch and have at it! Just say the word!

http://www.homebrewmart.com/. Makes a mess. Who's on cleanup duty?

Roberto - 4-12-2011 at 07:40 PM

Brown bottles please. Unless you like skunky beer.

Roberto - 4-12-2011 at 07:42 PM

Oh yeah - was that a guitar/amp I spotted last time? Should I bring mine and we can have a jam session? You comfortable with that? Starting to sound like a party.

Roberto - 4-12-2011 at 09:49 PM

Or, we could have a jam session and KT could sing in Spanish while we make beer. This is getting interesting. I may have to bring Gina along. She can't play, and can't speak Spanish, and doesn't make or (really) drink beer, but I'm sure she'll have a good time watching us try to do all of the above.

Another vote for Leon Cerveza Negra! "El sabor de la cerveza obscura estilo Munich" (The taste of Munich-style dark beer). I think it's a pretty darn good dark beer. Highly recommend!

This is by far my favorite Mexican beer. I usually purchase at the La Paz Wal-Mart. And, it's cheap! Priced at $47.50 mxn (6-pack) this past March. Around $4 usd!

Even though it's brewed by Modelo, for some reason it's not available everywhere. Soriana carries it but only the litre bottles (as of March 2011).

DonBaja - 4-17-2011 at 04:37 PM

I voted for Tecate only because that is what I'm drinking at this very moment. But I enjoy all the beers listed and more !! As long as it's ice cold I'll give it a try !!!
