Interesting thread ..

The TripAdvisor board has some regular posters that are sincere and genuine in their sharing of info - some however, have personal/business agendas for posting. There is no moderation so anything goes. Some are issued "EXPERT" status that may or may not be neutral in their positions and preferences.

From time to time a client of ours will bring our attention to a thread there ... We have been 'victim' of posts there that we wont respond to since we wont get invovled in the back-n-forth sought by some of the peeps there that get kicks&thrills from posting .. "15 mins of fame"

We can often tell if something is being discussed on that board by the phone calls we receive.

We do wish everyones travels that are safe and enjoyable wherever they are.

Not too sure about the validity of longjohns story ..

Couldn't agree more. I read a list of real nasty complaints about a major hotel on Kona (nameless in this posting because of all the sniping that goes on from infantile stalking losers on this board). There were a group of Canucks who were burying this place with all nature of blasts about food, the rooms, costs, the pool, they went on and on. I used the same place one month after those a-holes left and it was one of the best places on the island. I can say that with over 12 visits to the big island in my experience.

Well, one time , one a business trip, I was driving late at night on I-40 from Little Rock, AR back to the highway cutoff to Lafayette, AR. Business suit, new T-Bird rental from Hertz, absolutely no traffic. Up comes an old 4 door sedan with blacked out windows and pulls next to me. Eventually, I look over and see nothing but this totally blacked out sedan..black paint, black wheels, black windows. He kept alongside of me for awhile and I started to get pretty apprehensive. I tried slowing down ever so slowly to let them continue on their way....but they slowed down, also. I sped up and they kept up with me. This cat and mouse situation went on for several miles and nothing to do...no towns, no traffic, no police, no lights anywhere. Several miles ahead I knew the exit for my turn was coming up and I thought about my options. I must have been doing about 70 mph and as the exit came up I slammed on the brakes as hard as I could, swerved and just barely made the exit although I did feel the tail end start to swerve a bit. I glanced over to see the other car keep going west down the interstate. I must have broken every speed limit there was getting to my hotel that night. I was pretty shaken up by the entire experience. I have no idea what they wanted or their intentions. I say "them" but have no idea if it was just a driver or a carload of thugs. But this is a true story, it happened in the good ol' US of A and I still think about it at times more than ten years later. It was pretty scary, at least to me.
I don't know if it was just a joyriding hoax or a real threat. I do know that traveling 1/4 million miles every year on various business trips around this country, you develop a sixth sense of circumstances that it's best to avoid all together. I try to use these same senses when I travel to Mexico (more than 100 times) and I've driven as far south as Manzanillo. Never had a problem, or an accident or an incident. Things can and do happen everywhere... look at that young lady that disappeared in Aruba a few years back or that young English child kidnapped in Portugal last year.
You must be aware of your surroundings at all times no matter where you are these days. L.A., Chicago, Cabo or Cancun. Doesn't matter at all! Too many crazies out there........waiting for that right moment to mess things up for some unlucky or unknowing victim. Keep your eyes open! Other than that, I love Mexico...it's people and it's culture, it's history and it's scenery and especially it's beaches. But the reality is the few that are criminals and want to take advantage of tourists that are there....Let's face it... if you were in that mindset and situation, would you rather rob a taco vendor on the corner or try your luck with a rich tourista that doesn't even try to learn the language or customs.

oh goody, glad this thread came back to life....a few days ago we were returning to Asuncion from Guerrero Negro in our canuck friend's nice shiny nearly new Toyota pick up(contrary to USA nomads belief... they weren't too cheap to get a nice pick up!) when we saw a band of mexicans waving machetes AND axes along the side of the road...EEEEEK we screamed...must be the same band from san ignacio...we tried to identify the cell phone guy but there were no trees to hide behind...we slowed down and rummaged through the cooler for a coke to hurl...but only had beer, and we certainly were not about to waste that on banditos...no sireeee bob....these tricky guys were pretending to cut the bushes along the side of the road!!!!!! very smart banditos indeed....luckily we were close to Vizcaino and I guess their truck was broken down as they did not attempt to follow us. whew...had us worried there for a minuto.

Thanks for posting that. You made me feel alot better.I too was a "victim" of trip advisor and also choose not to get into name calling with the man. His rant just killed me, Too bad they can post anonymously. Also too bad people believe this stuff as gospel not remembering there is 2 sides to every story. I had a man personally email me to tell me he wasn't coming to the booksigning because of the article. Really bummed me out.but I thought the guy went a little out of his way to email me his intentions. Anyway I was feeling like I was the only one that this had happened to.You lifted a load off me. I can take it with a grain of salt now Thanks,k

Hello all.

Storey true or not there is definite concerns I have about going.
My wife and I are heading for Punta Chivato on 5/29 and in light of all the problems that are reported I am growing more concerned and nervous about going the closer the date gets
We have made the trip a couple times before with no problems.
However we are now driving a (new) 4x4 dodge truck, and once again will be towing
our boat down as well…afraid sticking out like a sore thumb.
We never travel at night or stop anywhere that isn’t necessary.
Hoping we don’t have anything they want.
Any advice or words of encouragement?

my "book" so far includes minor rip-offs at our various camps-no big deal. a friend who had his truck stolen in rosarito while he was in a restaurant, another who had his family shot at and had to run for their life, another who had their motorcycles and tools ripped off while they slept and another who, upon returning from their honeymoon travels in baja, were shot at, and taken from them their vehicle and contents inside the bed, while they were in parking area at la fonda restaurant....

My advice to anybody who is fearful: Stay home or go to Yellowstone.

There are already too many people cluttering up what used to be Baja's nice deserted beaches.

What????????? There are BEARS in Yellowstone!!!!! I will take Bandidos (or coyotes) anytime over BEARS!!!

The "fearful" should just huddle in their homes, leaving the wilds to us adventurers who foolishly venture forth, and pay attention to what is going on around us, hoping for the best.

You can't live forever, you know. :lol:

After some of the Nomads on this board wrote responses to the longhornjohn posting over on TripAdvisor it started to look like old longjohn had enough of the folks calling him a liar. The posting was removed.

Now if we can get oxxo to delete the post or a moderator to put it over on the OT section, we would be rid of this bizarre fairy tale.

That's fine with me, but I will leave it up to the moderators judgement. I think there are some lessons to be learned here, though.
