The Highway from Ejido San Lucas to Santa Rosalia is open and fine. Small amount of wash trash at the bottom of one of the vados. Think the worst seems to be over here.

Light patters of rain and some wind right now.

Clear enough to receive FTA TV and my satellite internet .

baja-spirit - 8-25-2008 at 10:19 AM

Russ waiting for a report from you. Hope Chivato didn't get too much wind and rain

Bob and Susan - 8-25-2008 at 11:14 AM

12pm...mulege on the bay

storm still here...
raining
30 mph winds and rain water off and on
cloudy...the dark kind

storm surge is bringing in water on the beach
water is dirty brown for about a 100 yards

Think of all our Mulege amigo's, hopefully it won't be bad this time.

Jack Swords - 8-25-2008 at 11:29 AM

Good thread re: Baja. Thank you all for reporting in. We have property in Pescadero and a sailboat in La Paz, but are out of it in California. Really appreciate the posted information (and cooperative posting). You are our most reliable and current information on what is going on. This becomes increasingly more important as hurricanes start bearing down on the peninsula. Already had lots of damage from previous hurricane (Marty) to our boat. Thanks again.

Is that from buoyweather or is there actually a buoy reporting this down there?

west wind blowing now in Asuncion...sun is out...looks like no rain for us...darn...maybe I'll do another load of laundry.
I'm wondering how our Elias Calles nomads and todos santos amigos fared...maybe the power is out as we haven't heard from them today?

Lots of rain in Mulege

We'll see if the rio improvements make a difference.

2:00PM
Just drove into town from from Loreto Bay. Things are getting back to normal.

Main road in Loreto Bay is dry and clear until you get to Aqua Viva. I saw a large truck drive through but the water looked too deep for my SUV.

Circled back around on the frontage road which is open to Highway 1 on the south entrance even though that road is dug up. This is really the only way in and out of Loreto Bay for smaller cars right now because construction on the frontage road blocks getting to the main entrance into Loreto Bay.

Highway 1 was clear. Last week one lane opened on the new bridge just north of the entrance into Nopolo so that was excellent timing.

Streets east of downtown in Loreto are clear but water still standing as you approach the malecon. Business getting back to normal. I got gas, food at the market and oil for the doors at the hardware store. Our biggest problem has not been leaks but the doors being warped so much they wont shut or open. We have water.

The tide must be in because Sea of Cortez water was splashing onto the malecon under the bridge at the end of the main street. With hurricane type winds it is easy to see how this storm could have been so much worse.

The attitude of the Loreto people is outstanding. I love them a lot all the time but love them even more at times like this.

cabobaja - 8-25-2008 at 01:23 PM

Rained this morning in Elias Calles. We now have sunny skies, which make my solar batteries smile. City water is down. Could be acouple of days before we have water. All n all, not a bad storm. Lots of rain, plants will be very green.

Anymore info from San Juanico?

Specifically reports on the salt flats from Datil or even the North road? My take is prolly not worth the risk after all that water falling but would be interested in any reports available.

Thanks for the update, I have been waiting to hear from you. I was so hoping that all of the dredging was going to do some good.

Sharksbaja - 8-25-2008 at 02:24 PM

Thanks for checking in Marv. Is this flooding from surge or the rio or both? Is power still on??

Cypress - 8-25-2008 at 02:36 PM

Lauriboats, It's all about "sea level". :) What do you get when you dig a hole in the Ocean? Mulege is located in a "funnel", lot's of water from the high country to the west has to pass thru a small place. Dredging only works when the tide goes out.;)

Sorry to Sharks and others ...... another clean-up.
Maybe the equipment we donated last time will help.
Also hoping that everyone stays safe.

rhintransit - 8-25-2008 at 02:57 PM

anyone heading south of Loreto on Hwy 1 check for info before you go. I drove north yesterday, rocksllide blocking one lane plus at the Mirador near El Juncalito/Pto Escondido. several fords of low water on roads. this at 1pm Sunday. I understand semis are lined up outside of town waiting to get south. anyone have more info?

CaboRon - 8-25-2008 at 02:58 PM

Just went into town and people are talking about a city 100 miles north called "Constitution" ? that is badly flooded with fourteen inches of rain and evacuations underway.

Is this just rumermill ? or does anyone have any solid info.??

There's a report about it in the paper (if that is any more accurate):

(Wikipedia: Ciudad Constitución is a city in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. It is the seat of the municipality of Comondú and is located 210 kilometers north of La Paz, Baja California Sur, and 147 kilometers south of Loreto,)

palmeto99 - 8-25-2008 at 03:17 PM

Farming community south of Loreto. last storm farms lost many animals and equipment. Many new bridges built over bad spots here on Mex 1 should help but this could be worse than John was.
Hang in there folks.

Cypress - 8-25-2008 at 03:26 PM

Comondu, La Purisima and San Isidro have probably taken a hard hit.:(

palmeto99 - 8-25-2008 at 03:49 PM

The mulege weather station is showing rainfall of 5.94 inches today...
I hope this is not accurate as that would be way to much for the river to discharge without spilling its banks.

Brianinloreto - 8-25-2008 at 03:58 PM

What a great job of reporting in - when you are in the States the news coverage is non-existent.

For up-to-date satellite imagery, go to Nat. Hurricane center website, east pacific tab; and also try satelitte imagery and look at GOES floater imagery. The GOES floater gives you satelite images within past 30 minutes, and has a loop fxn, allowing you to see past hour or 2 of movement.

6:30pm
mulege on the bay...

lots of wind
no rain since 3:30pm
the sun can be seen as it sets

maybe more water later

SharonT - 8-25-2008 at 05:57 PM

My husband, father and friends are down in Mulege (at the Oasis Park) fishing this week. They were flooded out earlier today and escaped up the hill behind the park. Houses on the river and a block up from the river are flooded, estimated 4 feet in houses on the river.

They were at Equipales getting something to eat as there is a generator. Didn't know where they were spending the night.

It doesn't sound as bad as 2006, but pretty bad all the same:barf:. Town is also a mess.

losfrailes - 8-25-2008 at 06:02 PM

Well, seeing sunshine, little or no wind nor rain. Perhaps its gone north. We did get our share of rain.
The highway north from Ejido San Lucas is no longer open to Santa Rosalia. It will be soon, but we had a rio muy grande in one of the arroyos.
Looking good here and thankful for the water in the mountains.

Wish a few more reporters had a rain gauge like Bob in Mulege. What seems like a downpour to a guy from San Diego, may just be a thick fog to someone from Seattle. Observations are subjective, numbers mean things.
Still the reports are welcome and give visions of a greener Baja, just like last February.

mulege on the bay...

didn't rain last night
but lots of wind... maybe 20-30mph...non stop
we were in the concrete casitas watching tv

actually we got a total of about 8 inches...this storm

i drained the pool ALL day yesterday and its still full
water came over the top twice and NO WATER RUN-OFF drains into it
ONLY from it

this storm produced ALOT of water

the temp is 78 degrees and seems cool
we had to use a sheet last night in bed

Report from Mulege 07:00 local time

EngineerMike - 8-26-2008 at 07:51 AM

Per telecon w/Saul Davis of Saul's Tienda:
Water yesterday 10 a.m. reached the floor of the river-side upstream house at La Fortuna & the surrounding ground for maybe 30 meters north. Hard rain washed a lot of dirt off local hillsides into the streets; otherwise no big deal other than power out.
High tide was reported to be ~noon, at plus 3.5 feet.

Flash flood hit hard in afternoon. River flooded in front of Saul"s till there was water in the road at entrance to La Fortuna. That would put crest level at about a meter below flood from Hurricane John.

One soldier died during rescue operations up Icehouse Road. Apparently he got swept into the current. The soldiers now garrisoned at the airport (since the armed heist of a Cessna (206 IIRC)) had their HMMWV & were pulling residents to high ground.

Power is out; water is out probably due to no power. Phones are working in town at least, but only if you have an old Western Electric type phone or generator. Anyone w/a fridge or freezer- your stuff is going bad. I haven't raised anyone on the south side of the river, so phone may be out there for now (I get ring tones but no answers, and no recordings from phone co.), or maybe everybody scrambled, or everybody has a 110V phone.

Based on the reports, I surmise the following:
Jorge's Park- hammered, again. Good place for a trailer or motorhome that leaves during chubasco season.
Orchard Village- 7 feet pus or minus your location.
Oasis- 1-5 feet depending on location (me probably 4, I hope).
Jungle- I'm guessing now- 0-3 feet, hopefully less
Maribel's- probably minimal cleanup in homes, streets a mess
La Fortuna- 0-8 feet depending.
Upstream from bridge-
High School- guessing 4-5 feet, probably killed the library again, and the computers.

Due to improvements to power lines after H.John, I expect power to be back up late today or tomorrow; that assumes the govt can mobilize. After John there were surplus workers which had been moved to Baja Sur, so getting power back up was about 5 days (2 in town); this time the south side of river & Loma Azul should follow more quickly due to improvements. All depends on mobilization. Water will come back on/off/on/off till major leaks are repaired; hopefully there will be fewer of those this time.

There will be a swath of Mexican families in the arroyo upstream of the bridge that are flooded out. We have rich, fairly recent experience w/relief efforts, so:
bring clothing, all ages; leave it at the Mission & Padre will handle handouts. After H.John there was a good size pile of clothing donations left, but those were mostly rags that had been donated by Mexican families further south. All the gringo clothing donations found homes. Kids will need new school supplies; backpack, 8.5x11 spiral notebook, pens, pencils.
Linens. Pillows. Soft goods should come wrapped well in plastic with a label as to contents as conditions will be muddy for a week, then dusty for, well, a long time. Mosquito repellent w/DEET, don't fool around w/the kid stuff; after H.Marty came the dengue fever, so please take that seriously. Sponges, brushes, cleaning supplies. Plastic snow shovels will be a great help for the first week if you are leaving today or tomorrow; after that flat nose & regular shovels; if you are thinking of upgrading tools, donate the old ones now, and thanks in advance. Rubber deck shoes will also be good for a week or ten days.

Thanks for all the help I'm sure will come. I'm in Sacramento now, packing the trailer & pickup. Once more into the breach!!

San Felipe Tue. AM

David K - 8-26-2008 at 08:01 AM

From the San Felipe web site:

Tuesday 26 August, 5:14 a.m. The skies just opened up. It is pouring hard. All night thunderclouds overhead performed an opera of rythmic lightning; without the thunder. Heavy clouds completely cover the entire area so that even at this hour it is dark shattered with continuing lightning strikes.

Strong winds clatter the venetian blinds on open windows, awakening the entire household. I can't wait to read the rain gauge when this lets up. My planned trip to San Diego is off for a couple of days.

5:38 a.m. the electrical power is tripping..bad on electrical equipment.

The wind has calmed some and rain is slowing for a bit but it is still dark under these heavy clouds. There is a little thunder out there. I shall now watch this show from my patio.

6:13 a.m.Daylight: The rain has stopped. Finally it is clearing. We can now check the rain-gauge which showed a whopping .4 inch of rain water. The clouds are moving around now; still heavily covered skies.

The wind has absolutely stilled in the last 1/2 hour. And now we can see the water, but with no sunrise reflecting on it's calm surface. The ground is soaked with puddles everywhere. And all this happened in one early morning hour.(st) Yesterday’s Max96 F, Min 83 F. Temperature currently 82.4 Humidity currently 64%.

Osprey - 8-26-2008 at 10:03 AM

Bornfisher, you are spot on. Five inches of rain in Seattle is a non event but a couple of inches in the desert can wreak havoc -- then again in some locales lots of rain in one critical location can be perhaps 10 fold what it might have been on the other side of town. We got 2.5 inches from Julio in this little village -- it left us landlocked but only for a few hours -- the storm was moving at 12 kts so it didn't linger and that was key. Local reports trump anything else.

Sunman - 8-26-2008 at 11:10 AM

Wondering if Abreojos got any rain? Per Shari, it sounds like Asuncion escaped it. Any reports?

The road to Chivato has been washed out for a couple of days and there was about 8 inches of rain running through the area. Boy, really anxious to hear more of an update. 6 PM Washington State time here on Tuesday. Have plans to fly out Thurs morning. #54 Oasis is our house. Hope the juice gets restored soon. The hardest thing is being here and not there to check out our house and to help our neighbors...and, of course, not being able to phone any of them to see how they are surviving. Any news would be welcome here. Mike and Rosalind Reichner

Thank you

EngineerMike - 8-26-2008 at 10:29 PM

Mike & Rosalind- friend did a walk thru of ours @ #56 Oasis today. Coupla inches of mud left in house & on everything. Fridge & stove upended (stove probably popped when the initial wave from the busted sliding glass door came whooshing in; fridge floated till it settled on its side. I hate muddy beer. About 54" in my place at high "tide." Beds & sofa ruined, there'll be kitchen & other stuff in the mud on floor. Stove needs total in/out cleaning including plumbing, valves... Stuff up high wasn't touched. Do you have someone to open up windows & get some air to the place? I'll be in camp Sat p.m., see you then. Bring mosquito repellent.

Sharksbaja - 8-26-2008 at 10:42 PM

Yeah Mike it's important to get stuff drying asap. Good luck and thanks again for your updates. I'm stuck here but have had crew working on my place currently. Hopefully they'll give me some priority.
We were getting ready to refurnish the house so we got lucky in a way. Just hope the walls held.

Word from San Felipe web site:

Wednesday 27 August, 7:00 a.m. White clouds are still dotting our skies, heaviest over the northern area from the mountains to the mainland. But it has been lowered to a Tropical Depression. We will not see any rain or violent action over San Felipe today. In fact, it is completely normal. Winds and water are very calm. Small cotton balls remaining in the skies are now scenic, not threatening. We are resuming plans for the week-end in town. (st) Yesterday’s Max92 F, Min 81 F. Humidity currently 55%.

EngineerMike - 8-27-2008 at 08:53 AM

Ros- I'm taking a new mattress & first effort will be to clean out a bedroom to stay in the house. Got a friend that will chuck out the old one & maybe sqeegie the floor first time B4 I get there. So I'll stay in the house. AC's weren't hit & power should be steady enough by Sat evening. Right now power is on/off/on. Taking a small generator in case. Serenidad should have rooms, probably Casa Grenada, and the hotels in town if needed. Cuesta Real also should be in biz, tho they woulda had some cleaning to do, don't think their beds woulda been wrecked.

He looks familiar. Does he do work with Grupo Tortuga?

ecomujeres - 8-27-2008 at 06:30 PM

Bajajudy:

No, Martin doesn't work with us in Grupo Tortuguero nor EcoAmigos. He's an english teacher at the Prep school and lives up on the hill behind Jungle Jim's.

Just got back home from 2 weeks of driving in baja. Spend a LONG sleepless night on Monday on the Hwy 1 stuck in between Mulege and SAnta Rosalia when the road washed out in 6 different locations. More to follow. Have pix but gotta find out how to post..gonna take a shower now....long past few days... Jon

shari - 8-28-2008 at 07:33 AM

Oh my Jon....sorry to hear of your hold up on the highway (would have been a good title for your post to get everyone riled up:lol:) But look at it this way....it could have been much worse...no violence involved, nothing lost but sleep and just think of the great baja story you can tell your amigos and grandchildren!!!! It's a classic baja adventure...wear it with pride!
Yesterday, the police were announcing around town for Mulege assistance...they are collecting stuff to send there to help the recovery.

JaraHurd - 8-28-2008 at 09:14 AM

Thanx Shari. I know, I know..you told me to visit you...but...I had to scratch another itch this time! I actually felt bad leaving that area (Mulege/SAnta Rosalio) because the people were so helpful..BUT..those clouds were still ominous looking and I did not want to stick around for the next bout of rainfall! I hope everyone there is well. The weird thing is that Santa Rosalia seems totally functional by the time we made it there..but if you were to travel southbound from there,,,,you would see a very different story!!! j

David Ks' next trip

Sharksbaja - 8-28-2008 at 11:40 AM

I see you are so consumed with your own trip plans that you completely overlooked the fact that someone was asking for info on their parents after a big flood. Not some reference to a book they wrote.

Sometimes that Nomad connection doesn't quite fit the bill eh? I hope it rains cats and dogs on your next trip to Baja.

I'd bet you would have plenty to post about that!

:P

Did the rain put out the campfire?

Cypress - 8-28-2008 at 12:31 PM

Campfires will burn out if you don't keep stoking 'em.:D It doesn't take long to use up all the close-by wood. After a while it gets to be too much work. In the end you get a pile of ashes. This flood, the 2nd. within 3 yrs., has stressed a lot of folks out. I'd be big-time stressed!

Sharksbaja - 8-28-2008 at 12:36 PM

Well Cyprus, it could be worse. You could be living in New Orleans. What do you say to them? "Chill out?"

Hope you did not miss the point!

Cypress - 8-28-2008 at 12:57 PM

Sharksbaja, Was raised down on the bayou along the MS gulf coast, been thru more than a few full blown hurricanes, all of 'em from the '50's thru the '80's. My family's preparing for "Gustav" as I type this. The storm surge from Katrina reached their doorsteps. Mississippi was hit dead on by Katrina. The New Orleans disaster was the result of a levee failure, a lack of leadership, and stupidity. You can't fix stupid. You can fix poor leadership. They re-elected the same worthless mayor.

This is the 3rd flood in 5 years. Sooner or later ,some of those in Mulege are going to figure it out.
Do not rebuild in a flood zone.
I would not bet against another one this season.

Cypress - 8-28-2008 at 02:40 PM

palmeto99, Yea, it's a sad situation.:(

Sharksbaja - 8-28-2008 at 03:42 PM

I must be a fool for even posting here anymore. You can have it all!:bounce:

David K - 8-28-2008 at 04:35 PM

Corky, hang on to your shark fin... but this is a public message board that appeals to all kinds of Baja lovers out there... In NO WAY does my putting up a photo of Tom and Patti's book PREVENT anyone from adding more storm details OR asking storm questions.

I have had many a threads start out on one subject (like my HID lights for example) and other topics get added (like onboard air compressors). Do I complain, does it stop me or anyone from asking more about HID lights?: NO! Open up you thinking, it is not a finite piece of the pie... it is a wide open sky...

The subject of this thread is still: "Tropical Depression 11E-Now TS Julio" and other than a photo of the book cover (to help people relate who Tom and Patti are if they weren't sure of their full names), I posted up dates on THAT very same storm system. That was still on subject... Your complaint and now my response is not... plus others who find your insults to me just as strange.

Perhaps you just ate a bad clam... I don't know what else would have you snap... Try and have a better day and I hope it doesn't rain on your next trip or flood you Mulege casa.

Adios

David,

Think about the fact that he is facing a financial loss to this property, a second time. That might ruin your day too.

Corky....Baja (Mulege) is not the only place in the world that expieriences floods, ocassional hurricane activity, and high water and even flash floods...... In my past travels to alot of semi remote and remote water wonderlands on this planet of ours, I have noticed that, for as long as time, indigeneous people have always built their houses elevated from the flodding events. Is that a possibility for you? Sorry about your misshap. Time will heel your wounds. ++C++ :light:

The Wise and Foolish Builders

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

Cypress - 8-28-2008 at 05:53 PM

About constructing houses elevated from flooding events, it's doable, so is a 10' levee along the river. The levee would block the view of the river and houses built on pilings? Jeez, that'd take all the fun out of floods.

Hey CaboRon:

I think the turtles may have first been posted by ELENVEST18, however, I can't be sure. Whenever I see a cool graphic or gif annimation I usually capture it and keep it in my documents .... then it migrates to photobucket so that it can be used here.

maspacifico - 8-28-2008 at 06:24 PM

Never mind the turtle............where did the vomiting emoticon come from?

CaboRon - 8-28-2008 at 06:43 PM

Just right click on any of those gif files and send them to a file in your documents .... I named a file animation and that's where they all live.

From the religious reference of course.

I appreciate the kind words Ken.

David, bless thee for your kind thoughts and compassion. I was hoping you'd leave yourself out of it like with Hurricane John.

btw, YOU are a bad clam but are in good company.;lol:

I'm gonna go steam some clams now.

Sharks,
I know what was being referenced and I had the same reaction as the emoticon. I didn't mean to rub in your loss in any way. Julio just ruffled our palapa but John really tore us up.

Sharksbaja - 8-28-2008 at 07:11 PM

Well I guess letting off steam on someone(DK) who should have a clue is silly at best.

Ok, David, nevermind..........

Glad you fared well pacifico.
