fdt - 12-26-2008 at 11:08 PM

Great, down to 20.

Ford - 12-26-2008 at 11:42 PM

I have 2 big boxes of toys that I will send to you overnight mail on Monday...so you will get them either tue. or wed. I can get an inventory of stuff from my wife if that makes it easier. I cant believe we are short of getting these kids one or two toys...I may have to go into some of the stuff my kids got and make a third box! They will only play with half the stuff once and move on to the next! I reminds me of a story of a guy who works for me that is from guatamala. We talk alot of how our kids dont appreciate the things they have. He tells 2 stories that come to mind. One is that when he was about 5 or 6 years old his dad bought him a Tonka Dump truck. Most Christmas' he didnt get anything but he loved that truck so much and he took such good care of it. That truck was his only toy and it lasted him 6 or 7 years! The other story is about how his son born and raised in SF CA, b-tches about food. " I dont like this kind of chicken!" He tells his son how he had to kill squirells with a slingshot to eat dinner. I'm sure you can imagaine the eye rolls he gets!

fdt - 12-27-2008 at 12:12 AM

Thank you Ford, youv'e been sponsoring the event for the past 3 years. I know we will meet the mark and have extra. I just know we are a week away and i start biting my nails but it always works out. I hope you and all the people that contribute to this toy drive could one time join us for the giveaway. It is a beautiful moment.
Anyway, we are only a few toys away so don't stop now, hurry, help make it happen.
Ford, check your'e U2U.
Gracias

Ford - 12-27-2008 at 03:32 PM

I was just saying to my wife that maybe next year we can try and make it down... The kids are getting old enough to understand what it means to give. Plus my oldest son is in spanish immersion kidnergarden so by next year he will be very versed in Espanol!

Ford - 12-27-2008 at 03:38 PM

My son just told me next year we should send them a new park to Mexico! When he was at the park the sun ruined everything! The slide was broken and a tree had fallen on to the play structure and the kids still loved the park. He said it was packed even though it was all broken imagine how much they would love a good park like we have! Kids are smarter than we think!

fdt - 12-27-2008 at 04:21 PM

We're almost there.

Ken Cooke - 12-27-2008 at 04:55 PM

Thank you for this information. I will be in Tijuana for New Years Eve, and on my way home (or to Mexico), I can drop off a toy or two.

fdt - 12-27-2008 at 07:29 PM

No Ken, bring them all the way to Tijuana, it would realy help. I can pick them up werever you are here.

DENNIS - 12-27-2008 at 09:27 PM

Long story - either get food and drink, or skip to another post

Miette - 12-28-2008 at 01:25 PM

Here is a brief (that's not true, sorry) report. Note to fdt - Two padded envelpes of items will be sent to the Jackson Hewitt location on Monday via overnight US mail.

Yesterday, I sent a friend to Ross - Dress for Less and the e.e. of Walmart. He is an active-duty Marine (on 96) so he was , of course, delighted to go toy shopping for me. "Go to the toy dept. first and then have a general look around.!" I might have used some of the wrong words here (I am not an ex-Marine), but he grasped what I was grunting out from my position-of-comfort on the couch.

We were equipped with cell phones, and I had the burning desire to do something useful while resting my sprained ankle on a pillow, and catching up on US television shows.

Here is an informal field report.

Ross Dress for Less - the toy department had already been invaded and there were few survivors - humans or toys. BUT - there were "very cute" (his words) girls rubber-type shoes (like those Croc things, but much cuter). They had small pink ones with Dora the Explorer on them, and Skechers brand, also pink with colored swirls for older girls - on sale - all sizes $5.00USD.

I told him to move on to Walmart, but to tag the location of the shoes so that we could relocate them.

Attention Walmart shoppers - Be careful here - management seems to be aware of the fact that some people are out shopping with their pockets full of Christmas and Channakah money. There were some items on sale, but not as much as one would have expected.

"Toy department! Toy department", I hissed, into the mouthpiece. "Yeah, shut up!, he hissed back, confirming my order.

Here are the details: Barbie dolls - Ballerina Barbie $5.97 The Diamond Castle Barbie $5.00. He put two of each of these in the cart.

I then had a dormant brain cell come to life, and I used it to come up with a good idea. "Hold up. " I hissed. "Quit hissing at me!" he yelled. "Great! Now I'm getting weird looks from strangers in Walmart. Thanks. Thanks a lot."

It was too late. Me and my new brain cell were rereading fdt's original thread and coming up with some fresh ideas.

"Hey, I need items for older children. As a girl, I am going to focus on what I know. Head to the lip gloss and nail polish department." I heard a guttural growl. "You. Will. Pay. For. This."

"Move, jarhead!"

Ha! That trick worked and the next thing he knew he was in the cosmetics department. Long story, a bit longer, I had him purchase some pink and clear nail polish, and some light pink and clear lip gloss. Mission almost accomplished.

Finally, he (all six-feet and 220lbs of him) went to the check out counter and purchased the Barbies, nail polish, and lip gloss.

That, and a few other items, will be sent in a couple of large padded envelopes on Monday.

I'll be right back. Someone is at the door. I do have a door bell; the insistent pounding really isn't necessary.

fdt - 12-28-2008 at 03:44 PM

Thank you very much for all of youre efforts, sounds like you had fun phone shoping ;D

:tumble: Miette,
Just so you may avoid future gaffes: I live near a Marine Corps Air Station and work with several "no longer active duty" Marines who liked the desert and settled here.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN EX-MARINE

Or as the bumper sticker many sport says:

"Not so lean, not so mean. Still a Marine."

:bounce:

How many toys do you still need?

Ken Cooke - 12-30-2008 at 12:56 PM

Fernando, please write CG back. We were wondering...

fdt - 12-30-2008 at 02:40 PM

We have, with the promises of fishbuck, Miette, duke 62, oladulce, Ford, CG and Ken Cooke and our Tijuana friends and the toys we have purchased, we have well surpassed the mark. We can always use more since we always have the cousins, brothers and friends of the children we have show up.
Now to concentrate on the tamales, chocolate and Rosca de Reyes.
I will start another thread for ONLY those interested in participating in the give away on Jan 04. We need to know who is comming, so we can make the appropriate arrangements. It would be great if the Tijuana and Rosarito resident Nomads could join us.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
If you want to send or bring toys to the drop off location in Chula Vista, please do so as we can always use more. If you want to paypal, go ahead.
Gracias y Feliz Aņo
Fernando y familia

Please, we have a Mexicoach City Tour bus to take us to deliver the toys. Please let me know if youre coming.

fdt - 12-30-2008 at 03:53 PM

First of all, Thanks for making the 3rd annual toy drive posible. We have well surpassed (taking into consideration the toys that we have been promised) the number of toys needed for the all the children of the toy drive.
Now for the fun part, the fiesta and toy give away.
The event will be at a little chappel called" De los Santos Martires" located in Lomas Taurinas in Tijuana.
Lomas Taurinas is located between the airport and the UABC.
We would like to know who would like to attend the event.
It will be at 12 noon and we will have tamales, hot chocolate and Rosca de Reyes for everyone.
We have the Mexicoach City Tour bus and police escort

Meet early at the Mexicoach terminal on Avenida Revolucion, 9:30Am and take a tour of the city, visit the Tijuana Cultural Center and toy giveaway at noon and return you to the border.
You do not need to bring a car.
Tijuana and Rosarito area Nomads are encouraged to participate.
Please U2U me if you would like to attend so we can have enough tamales.
Saludos, gracias y Feliz Aņo Nuevo

OSO OMG! My humble apologies to all active and non-active duty Marines. I should know better, too. I have attended graduation ceremonies where the non-active Marines are asked to stand and be recognized for their past and current (off-duty) service. SO, TO BE CLEAR - OSO, YOU ARE RIGHT! I MADE A MISTAKE AND I APOLOGIZE! Thanks again for so gently correcting me.

Dang! Someone is pounding on my door - again!

Well, he'll just have to wait.

fdt I just checked the tracking on my package. It was mailed via Express mail yesterday. Here's the current status:

Processed, December 29, 2008, 8:55 pm, LAS VEGAS, NV 89119

Acceptance, December 29, 2008, 3:42 pm, LAS VEGAS, NV 89119

I was guaranteed delivery on December 31,2009. The package weighs 6 and a half pounds and is in an official USPS parcel post white box.

GRRRRRRRRRR! I am a wee bit angry with the USPS. I will keep an eye on the tracking.

I am placing a Vegas bet with my Marine Corp buddy that the package doesn't arrive until January 2. It is not really a fair bet because I have a CI within the USPS. They (USPS) have been extremely inefficient this December.

Don't get me wrong, I love the USPS. It is one of my favorite postal services; when compared with other government mail services around the globe, I still rate them number one. Still. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

pacside - 12-30-2008 at 04:29 PM

fdt - just sent in a donation to the toy drive paypal account. sorry i didn't get my act together to get the gifts myself.

we are making the drive in a month or so from norcal...wish it were sooner so we and our 5 year old could participate in the giveaway.

thank you for all your hard work.

pacside

p.s. in the future would be good to know if gently used toys would be of use?

fdt - 12-30-2008 at 04:34 PM

Thank you pacside. I wish all of the people that make this possible could come and be a part of the toy give away.
All of you are great.
As for used or slightly used toys we prefer not to, not that we or the children would not appreciate it but I think less fortunate kids already have to many used toys, clothes, and aother things that a new, never used, just for them toy is the best thing that can happen to them.

I can't come to Tijuana until Saturday. So, can I also bring my video camera??? Payday isn't until the 2nd, so I have to condense everything (food/drink/Fernando's Toy Drive) all into 1 weekend. I want to bring my videocamera so we can help advertise for next year.

::Here is an example of my work in Baja::

Ken Cooke - 12-31-2008 at 03:29 PM

Fernando,

Can I bring my videocamera??? Can I??? Can I??? Huh??? I plan on being there Sunday.

Yes, bring youre camera. I'll reserve you on the bus.

fdt - 12-31-2008 at 05:56 PM

Great, see you then.

Ken Cooke - 12-31-2008 at 09:09 PM

Chris and I will definitely be ready and waiting in Tijuana to catch that Mexicoach just like we did when Antoņio and you had your "Taste of Tijuana" tour in Nov. '06. So, look out for us - are we to meet again at the CECUT parking lot the morning of the event? Please let us know...

Here's pictures to remind you when you see two hitchhikers -- to please STOP and let us on the bus.

What are the rules governing videotaping in public places?

Ken Cooke - 1-1-2009 at 08:52 PM

I will keep the camera nice and discreet, but when I was in Colombia, I couldn't photograph my gf inside the mall. The police would only let me take 1 picture.

I heard once that you can't take photographs in downtown Tijuana for similar reasons? I will have a digital camera and my full-size 3CCD video camera as well.

Thanks, Fernando.

Dia De Los Reyes Toy Drive w/FDT

Ken Cooke - 1-4-2009 at 08:27 PM

On Saturday morning, I left for T-I-J-U-A-N-A. You know, that place, full of killings, mass murder, for what could be described as an event which showed the positivity and cariņo y amistad of two neighbors who live side by side, but rarely venture out to greet each other.

At 11 a.m., I left my safe, predictable neighborhood in central Riverside for what has been described in the Los Angeles Times as, "...second only to Baghdad in kidnappings." I drove to Tijuana regardless the latest crop of news articles describing a mega city in decay.

I arrived at my friends home in Soler after stopping for insurance at Instant Mexico in San Ysidro. Business there has been off, with the parking lot remaining mostly empty throughout my time there visiting with my friend Janice.

Two lanes entering Mexico were closed, and a soldier holding a semi-automatic rifle stood at the entryway, waving motorists through the countrys once cheery entrance.

When I arrived at my friend Chris' home, his wife was finishing up a late lunch she had prepared for us. Steaming hot vegetables, baked fish, rice, beans, and tortillas (which we picked up at the neighborhood store). After lunch, we ran a few errands, returning to his house with the local police tracking down a criminal - sirens blaring, pickup trucks flying past us at 40-50 m.p.h. on a 20 m.p.h. street.

We stayed in and by 9:15 a.m. the next morning, we were driving to Discoteca Leyva's underground parking lot on Calle Revoluccion - directly across from a patient Fernando who was puffing on a cigarette and talking logistics. We left by 10 a.m. for a brief tour of Tijuana - visiting highlights such as the Jai-Lai Palace, The CECUT Museum, L.A. Cetto Winery, Tijuana Brewery, and Fernando's hillside home. Fernando's Hillside Home?

Fernando's wife Simone, daughter Sylvia, son Fernando Jr., joined Fernando's other daughters (whose names evade me at the moment), and we loaded up the Mexicoach motor coach which doubled as a Dia De Los Reyes pickup truck. With bicycles and gifts finally loaded (with help of Nomad Scott who was shuttled across the border from San Ysidro, CA), we continued on to Lomas Taurinas - the cite of a horrifying murder of a candidate for the Mexican presidency in 1994. Fact: Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta (February 10, 1950 – March 23, 1994) was a Mexican politician, and PRI presidential candidate, who was assassinated during a meeting on his presidential campaign in this mostly poor Tijuana colonia.

As we turned our last turn and headed towards the tiny Catholic church which housed our group for roughly 2 hrs., children stood in the tiny park, waiting for our arrival). Smiling, pointing to their parents, the children began to run alongside the Mexicoach until we came to a stop at the bottom of the steep hill. Finally parked, it took roughly 20 minutes to unload the bus. Once inside, the children were hardly able to sit still, unable to contain their enthusiasm and excitement that so many Nomads packaged (with the help of Mrs. FdT's gift wrapping/labeling abilities).

As a form of welcome, the children performed a special dance they had learned, and with packages sorted into age groups, and boys or girls gifts, the excitement began. As I videotaped the event, off towards the main entrance, a special excitement brewed - DOUG MEANS entered the building! Driving directly from El Rosario that morning with Michelle and his little son, Doug looked road-weary, but satisfied to have made this important once a year event from such a long ways off.

First toys, then bicycles were given out to children of this hard-scrabble Lomas Taurinas area. A special corn and Chocolate drink was served along with a sweet Mexican pastery to the families and children, then Tamales and Coke Classic to the Nomads and staff who organized this event. The church staff, parents, and children thanked us for our generosity. The photos show the happiness we were able to spread to our neighbors south of our international border.

After our brief lunch, we borded the Mexicoach, and promptly dropped Scott at the pedestrian line before returning to Calle Revoluccion where we had to return the bus by 2 p.m. From there, Chris' family and I said goodbye to Fernando and his excellent staff he assembled for this successful day. Everything went smoothly - reminding me of David K and Antoņio Muņoz's "Taste of Tijuana" 2006 event.

From el centro de Tijuana Chris' family carried me to Restaurante China de Oro an excellent Chinese buffet in the center of Solern (directly across the street from Smart and Final). For $5, I had a complete buffet meal - just like the old days in 'Vegas! After typing this article, I plan to walk to the neighborhood market for a few cervezas and call it a night...or weekend - since, tomorrow I return to the land of predictability. Good thing I live so close to Tijuana. :bounce:

Nice to meet everyone. Ken is not only hard core off road, but has some great camera skills also.
Fernando Jr. brought his tools and fine tuned the bikes.
Several children joined us and had a great time, and worked hard in making this a great day.
Oscar, thanks for the bikes. I look forward to meeting you.
I felt very safe in Tijuana. We had a great bus and tour guides.
Also many thanks to Doug!

A great big thank you to all Baja Nomads that once again made the Dia de Reyes Toy Drive a huge success. 121 children received toys and we had extras. Wow over 200 toys were delivered yesterday on a beautiful sunny day.

We had the big Mexicoach bus loaded with presents, bikes and Rosca de Reyes, we started out at 10Am with a tour of the city and a little before noon we were unloading the gifts at Lomas Taurinas.
Scot, Ken, CG and family, Doug and family and myself y familia were there. Ket took video and Doug pictures that I'm sure will be posted soon.
Again thank you so much for all that you did.

Thanks fdt et al. for all your hard work. Fernando, sorry I couldn't make the festivities this year. Next year, I promise. I was grateful just to play a small part.

Also thanks to my brother, Kurt, a principal at Escondido High School and former Spanish teacher/translator, also a long time Baja explorer/surfer, for coming with me to bring some of the bikes across. His wife had a nightmare the night before about him getting kidnapped in TJ and almost forbade him from coming. He is in more danger from some of his gangbanger students. (Oops, hope you are not reading this Gina).

Thanks to Grover for making the bikes look so shiny and new.

A great start to the New Year. Let's hope for more positive stories like this out of TJ/Baja in 2009.

I have no pictures to post, sorry. I very much depend on Doug for this and thank goodness he and his family always attend. This year was even more special since Ken came along and shot video that I'm sure he will be uploading on youtube or somewere for us to view.

Everyone,

As you know, I brought along my digital camera as well as my digital videocam. I am working on the video today, and I hope to have it finished by this evening. If all goes well, it will be on YouTube later tonight.

Is that you, Fernando? Hey, it is you! :bounce::bounce:

I worked like crazy to put this project together yesterday. Now, I'm off to the desert to visit with some of my Baja Grande friends and weld some parts together on another guys Jeep. Enjoy the video, everyone. The title song, "Cuando Vuelvas" is performed by Felipe Pelaez. He is one of my favorite singers.

Enjoy everyone!

Those kids sure look happy. Fdt you did a wonderful job, A+. Ken that was a great video. Thanks to everyone who participated in the third annual Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive.

WOW!

What a great video, Ken. Learned a lot about the history behind the Nomads.

Fernando, you and your gorgeous Simone and other members of your family put together a superhuman effort to support the kids of such an embattled city. The city needs you. Just don't run for political office.
Jana and I were glad to have helped, and will do so in future years, as well as any other charity events you host.

Thanks for the compliments, Udo. It was wonderful to be a part of this Toy drive. I am glad that Fernando kept asking me to help out. Now, I have a great video and memories to be proud of.

Excellent video, Ken. You should consider a career as an indie film producer. I got a kick out of seeing those round wrapped packages:spingrin:
