Anyways booze and cigarettes(ARTIFICIAL these are the real DRUGS,the government just tricked us) killed 10,000 x more people in the US last yr than a natural plant called marijuana created by GOD. Anyways I'm probably just going to get some herb(NATURAL unlike booze and cigs) at my destination down in Baja. Sorry for all the trouble and thank for everyones insight.

Take it easy my friends.

Going to BOLA you will only go through 1 checkpoint going south. At Maneadero. They usually wave everybody through going south with no inspection.
There are also a few checkpoints on the toll road but again they usually only check the northbound traffic.
Use the same level of caution you would in the US. Maybe a little.
Do not try to cross back into the US with anything!

Ummm, don't forget El Rosario (up on the mesa)!

Others can pop up at will.... have been at Tres Hermanos (near the El Marmol road) and Cataviña (just south of the Santa Ynez road) in the past.

Hey LoyeB
Have a great time in BOLA. Bring your windbreaker as it can get a little windy.
Some good mariscos too.
Are you camping?

capt. mike - 12-18-2009 at 11:51 AM

messing with weed in Mexico is never worth the risk. taking it with you, buying it there - doesn't matter - one careless moment and someone will want to capitalize on your mistake - cost you plenty before you get out.

in the 70s i knew people going to rocky point for spring break who'd hide some stash in the desert off the road on the US side before the Sonoita crossing so they's have some smoke for when they returned from Mexico.
that was in Organ Pipe Cactus national monument.
once they couldn't find it....wonder why..???:lol::lol::lol:

Something to Consider...

About 1996 I was traveling down Baja and pulled into Loreto for the night. The next morning as I was headed out of Loreto there were 4 or 5 young Canadian women all hitchhiking for a ride south. At first I thought of picking them up and giving them a ride. Now I'm towing a trailer with a truck (a fair amount of $'s invested for me at the time). I passed them and headed south to Juncalito to check things out. Past Loreto but before Juncalito I'm forced to pull into a checkpoint of the guys with the blue uniforms which I believe are looking for drugs. After some inspecting I'm waved through. Later I'm thinking to myself..."what if I had picked up those women, got sent into the inspection and they found pot on one of these gals?...I would have instantly been in hot water...like all my vehicles confiscated!...and me detained in a jail somewhere?". Same thing happened to my dad about 20 years ago...he went down to TJ with a girl friend one Fri. Nite. Comes back across the border and Customs asked his girl friend to open her purse. Hey...guess what he finds?...a baggie of pot! They get sent to secondary...my dad had no clue she had pot in her possession. Customs is threatening my dad that they were going to tear apart his car to find possibly more drugs. After some pleading by my dad that he didn't know she had it on her and he didn't toke they let him off with a $150 fine. But the lesson here is that you can get caught up in the drug dragnet due to someone else's carelessness/screwups/stupidity. It's one reason why I don't pick up hitchhikers in Baja. I don't know these people nor where they're coming from.

Bajahowodd - 12-18-2009 at 01:14 PM

ElFaro's Loreto tale reinforces what David said. We veteran Baja drivers know where all the regular checkpoints are, but whether it the army or the police, a temporary checkpoint can materialize just about anywhere. And they will usually arise out of some criminal activity that's being chased down.

LoyeB;
All the negative responses are from either ex-cops or uptight non-cool people. In other words, they don't party and they don't know what they are talking about. They have no experience.
Don't forget about the film cannister in the peanut butter.

Skeet/Loreto - 12-18-2009 at 02:12 PM

LoyB:
I would encourage you not to take DOPE nor use it in Baja.

I would suggest that you take a Mask and Snorkel and Fins with you. Go to the island of Delfonso and go diving, Watch for the Sharks and if you get a chance swim with Them.
Now if you don"t get a "High" from doing that, well you could always be a Cop or maybe and uptight non-cool person,

Would not have to be concerned about killing someone else's Children!!

Please be Careful

A buddy of mine told me that a lot of places have drug dogs now, even going southbound. Are the cops/military familiar with this law ?

cops love to arrest gringos, because gringos will pay mucho $$ to get out of jail. if you buy in mex, chances are that seller may turn you in for $$, then cops will scare you a bit and extort $$ from you (yes, they will assist you in getting money wired from parents at home), and you will flee home scared and broke, but wiser.
if you run into skeet, it appears he may kill you (it's his big city ways ruling over his friendly rural bumpkin ways??)
another thread on here started by skeetkiller said that rural folk in baja are all kind, lovable "don't worry, be happy" nonmaterialistic people,... i.e. the rastafarian set,... so if you find them, buy from them.

My biggest "High" was my first DOPE BUST on Hollywood Blvd. Got the guy as he was getting into the Car. Who knows how many lives I saved that night.

If the whole world could forget their differences just long enough to gather together in order to bestow an award for "The Best Human In The World", it would be given to you, Skeet.
Right now, I wish you would listen to your calling and go to Afghanistan to save the helpless. I'll even pay for your ticket.:lol:

They have them at all military checkpoints with gloves up to their elbow. They will say to you in Spanish like this. "Bienvenido a Baja California. El Perro Detector Narcótico detecto algo. Por favor bájate sus pantalones y inclínate." [Welcome to Baja California. The Narcotic Detector
Dog detected something. Please lower your pants and bend over.]

Bajahowodd - 12-18-2009 at 03:53 PM

Geez, David. You have now scared dozens of potential travelers away.

They used to show Reefer Madness to us in the Los Angeles City Schools in the 1950s. We all guffawed, knowing as kids that they were trying to feed us BS!:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Those kind of lies worked against them and so we smoked it, knowing that that propaganda were lies, and we disproved the lies to ourselves. You can't lie to kids and then expect respect.:fire:

Bajahowodd - 12-18-2009 at 04:58 PM

Boys and girls, Reefer Madness was produced in 1936. it was at a time when our wonderful government placed a prohibition on a number of "drugs" that had previously been left to personal discretion.

Then in the 60's or 70's they replaced Reefer Madness with one that had Sonny & Cher that was almost as bad. I just remember Sonny saying something like" drugs aren't cool, man!" It didn't seem to have much effect on my peer group.
