Wind and seas are building...never seen it like this! Really Rad! Boy do I love all the rocks in front here as they are protecting us by breaking up the waves so only spray gets to us. I'm blowing goodbye kisses to the palapa as it is slowly disappearing.
High tide will be around 1 in the morning and again tomorrow afternoon when the swells might be REALLY monstrous...stay safe everyone...dont try to cross arroyos.

A squall blew on shore in TJ a few hours ago. I've NEVER seen it rain so hard, anywhere, ever. Solid water for about 10 minutes. Very windy and dry now. Just walked out to the ocean bluff, had to lean into the wind to keep stationary. Pretty wild!!

I'm ready for all this to stop.

shari - 1-21-2010 at 06:18 PM

just looked outside again...which I've been doing pretty much all day and saw a glimpse of sunset...woo hooo...still blowing steady around 40 knots...sure reminds me of vancouver island.

We are holed up in Mallarimo's now and everyone in Ensenada is telling us to stay put. Punta Banda has been without power for 24 hours now and reports are coming in about parts of the road missing. We ran into people coming south and there are several road closures with hours of wait. Many deep arroyos with four feet of water. So it seems the worst of it may be from Catavina to TJ as far as road conditions. Marla.

If you need to stay, or park your rig at our place at the Baja Country Club, please let me know.

Hook - 1-22-2010 at 06:00 AM

We are getting ABSOLUTELY HAMMERED by winds that I would estimate occasionally exceed 60 mph right now! This is in the Guaymas/San Carlos area.

Still no rain to speak of but the Wundermap of this area is showing some large storm cells headed this way.

It's gonna be some morning. I suspect that some boats may have come off their moorings in Bahia San Carlos and may be on the rocks. Many people in there right now, living on their boats.

Hook - 1-22-2010 at 06:41 AM

Rain starting in earnest here, now.

One unusual aspect of this storm: it's 69 degrees right now before daybreak. Must be riding the Pineapple Express in.

shari - 1-22-2010 at 08:55 AM

morning amigos...it was a long rough night. For the first time, I saw our roof lifting off....yikes...so we tied diving weights and dumbells onto the joists in the middle...taped the windows and hoped for the best. It rained hard during the night and there were some puddles in the house this morning but we still have a roof and all our windows.

The big fishing boats that sought refuge in the bay had a hard time dragging anchor and rockin and rollin in the big waves.
Gotta go pick up palm leaves....its' partly sunny right now and the swell is getting bigger...some spectacular splashes on our rocks out front....hope everyone is safe.

Just got off the radio w/ Ralph XE2/N6MNO at Rancho Santa Ines (3945mHz) who reported a 24 hr rain total of 3.29" and a storm total of 5.1" - YEE HAW! Looks like it's gonna be a beautiful spring in the Baja desert this year!

Thanks LN... That means the Mision Santa Maria Road bog (after the Widowmaker) may be very wet next month!

Last night here in Oceanside (5 miles inland), we had 'sideways rain' the wind was so strong! It is now raining again (8:45 am Friday).

And in Borrego, as well. Frank's PWS down at Canebrake says they got 3.25 inches.

Any further reports on the Baja Highway from the border to Mulege? From any routes south... Tecate, Otay, or Tijuana?

Vados and valleys flooded I see, some bridges may be damaged.. would appreciate updates on conditions day by day from highway flood areas.

We are gearing up for a push south to Mulege and BOC. So far we are on track for crossing a week from today..Jan 29th. Will write a road report by Feb. 1st -or so- from Coyote Bay.

"Come hell or high water"...an apt expression here.

We are a 4x4 Quadcab towing boat on trailer....and other assorted beer wagons in the caravan.

Thanks. Buen Viaje and Buena Suerte!

Russ - 1-22-2010 at 11:16 AM

There are 4 or 5 folks from PC that are heading down ASAP and would also like updates. Thankx

desandmarla - 1-22-2010 at 11:34 AM

We are still in Guerrero Negro. Federal Police have informed us that Laguna Chapala is a lake over the road, not passable. Both vados in Catavina are flowing and not passable. Three bridges are closed south of Ensenada before San Quintin. If we try to move north tomorrow, we will keep you posted on how it goes. If you don't hear from us then you know we are somewhere in between Guerrero Negro and Ensenada!! If anyone makes it through these spots today, please advise. Thanks, Marla.

Those poor people at Rancho Chapala. They have to be under water. Guess I will try to take extra stuff next week

Shari---glad your roof stayed on! down in Abreojos I noticed quite a few houses have rebar hooks sunk into the foundation---when high winds/hurricanes are imminent they tie ropes from the rebar over the roofs to hold them down.

Looks like its going to be a banner year for wildflowers all over the peninsula...

rts551 - 1-22-2010 at 12:04 PM

Or we bury tires in the ground as well

Mexitron - 1-22-2010 at 12:08 PM

Wow---from the Weather Underground site:

The most powerful low pressure system in 140 years of record keeping swept through the Southwest U.S. yesterday, bringing deadly flooding, tornadoes, hail, hurricane force winds, and blizzard conditions. We expect to get powerful winter storms affecting the Southwest U.S. during strong El Niño events, but yesterday's storm was truly epic in its size and intensity. The storm set all-time low pressure records over roughly 10 - 15% of the U.S.--over southern Oregon, and most of California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. Old records were broken by a wide margin in many locations, most notably in Los Angeles, where the old record of 29.25" set January 17, 1988, was shattered by .18" (6 mb). Bakersfield broke its record by .30" (10 mb). The record-setting low spawned an extremely intense cold front that rumbled thought the Southwest, and winds ahead of the cold front reached sustained speeds of hurricane force--74 mph--last night at one Arizona mountain location, Apache Junction, between Tucson and Phoenix. Wind gusts as high as 94 mph were recorded in Ajo, Arizona, and a Personal Weather Station in Summerhaven (on top of Mt. Lemmon next to Tucson) recorded sustained winds of 67 mph, gusting to 86 mph, before the power failed. Prescott recorded sustained winds at 52 mph, gusting to 67 as the cold front passed, and high winds plunged visibility to zero in blowing dust on I-10 connecting Phoenix and Tucson. The storm spawned one possible tornado in Arizona, which touched down at 8:32 pm MST in Phoenix near Desert Ridge Mall. No damage or injuries were reported. If verified, it would be only the 7th January tornado in Arizona since record keeping began in 1950.

rts551 - 1-22-2010 at 12:30 PM

lizard lips - 1-22-2010 at 01:32 PM

Power still out in Punta Banda and Nextel service has been interrupted in Ensenada. Still overcast and raining periodically.

DanO - 1-22-2010 at 02:05 PM

Latest news is that Mex 1 south of Maneadero is closed just north of Ejido Uruapan. Only Uruapan residents are being allowed through. About 60 semis are lined up southbound (my guess is that Juan at Acambaro is doing brisk business at his restaurant/store). A bridge south of the army checkpoint has collapsed (not sure, but this may be the one you cross just before entering Santo Tomas southbound).

DanO - 1-22-2010 at 02:09 PM

Here's a pic from you know who's site of some flooding, which my sources tell me is somewhere between San Vicente and San Quintin.

Wow, desandmarla, that sounds pretty grim.

I know of a few campers who have surely been hunkered down for a week of fierce winds and rain - sounds like they aren't going anywhere any time soon.

Be safe, best of luck, and keep the updates coming please.

Tuna for the taking in Imperial Beach
By Ed Zieralski, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/jan/22/beachcomber-g...
Friday, January 22, 2010 at 12:20 p.m.

Kevin Carlson shows off one of the bluefin tuna he was able to pull from the surf.
IMPERIAL BEACH— Beachcomber Kevin Carlson says he never knows what the Pacific Ocean will deliver after a big storm, but Friday morning he encountered his most unusual discovery in more than 20 years of walking beaches.

Carlson found several bluefin tuna in the 35- to 50-pound class struggling in the surf line off Imperial Beach. He was just north of the Imperial Beach Pier and north of the first jetty when he spotted them. Carlson theorizes the tuna escaped from one of the tuna pens floating off the coast of northern Baja. Perhaps the recent storms tore open one of the pens.

“There were a lot of them out there,” he said. “More than a dozen, but a couple of them were fresh dead fish and a few others were struggling to get out of the shallow surf. Once they got into the surf line, they couldn’t get out.”

Carlson waded in and gathered up 35- and 50-pound bluefin and let the ocean have the rest.

“The Pacific Ocean has been wonderful and bountiful for me over the years,” Carlson said. “But in 20 years of beachcombing, I’ve never found anything like this. I’ve found lobster traps with lobsters in them, you name it. You just never know what the Pacific Ocean is going to give up.”

Carlson, who works on the sport boat The Long Run out of Marina Cortez on Harbor Island, said he plans to eat the tuna and save the carcasses for his hoop nets. He also hoop nets for lobsters.

Some of the blackest clouds I have ever seen are rolling across the 57 fwy in Orange right now. If this stuff hits the house in La Mision, I will have a lot of work on my hands next weekend! Any current reports from that area?

toneart - 1-22-2010 at 05:33 PM

When you get that experience behind you, then you will fit right in with us in The Orhard in Mulege. :o;D

On a serious note, I wish you the best of luck with your clean up, and that there is not a lot of damage.

Thanks Tony! A month or two after Miriam and John hit Mulege, my wife and I got stuck at the El Morro in SR for two days. Another TS came in and blew out the bridge near the prison, and a couple vados to the north of town. Stranded in an ocean front room for two days, in a wild storm, with a beautiful woman, I somehow survived the ordeal!:saint:

bajaguy - 1-22-2010 at 07:07 PM

No need to panic or evacuate. Power supposed to be restored by tomorrow on Punta Banda, according to CFE. Apparently 4 -6 poles down, one with a major transformer which needed to be rebuilt.

Road from Manadero to La Bufadora open but muddy.

The Bufadora road from Maneadero is open. Use with extreme caution as there are potholes that will ruin your day.
The bridge by Martinez farms is three feet above water and that water is a raging river. Yesterday AM it was over the top.
Some of the side roads going up the hills into Cantú are torn apart...others passable.
Lots of building damage. Sharky's took a big hit.
It's starting to rain again but, lightly and without the wind.
For me....life is good. For some others....not so good. Tomorrow we'll start the process.

We just had a downpour for about 30 minutes in Guerrero Negro, just what we need!! Talked to some people in the bar who were headed North today. Came from La Ventana and had no idea of the problems. Braved Laguna Chapala before it was too bad but could not get into Catavina. The southern arroyo was raging. By the time they turned around got back south, they had to wait three hours at Laguna Chapala for a chance to cross. When several cars passed in three to four feet water successfully, they braved it and made it back here to Mallarimos. Enrique the owner of Mallarimos says that when we see a bus come south we will know it is safe to head north, until then stay put.

anyone know if the arroyos between ensenada and san quintin still full or have repairs begun?

k-rico - 1-23-2010 at 09:12 AM

Blue skies and COLD in Playas de Tijuana this morning. We had two baby pea sized hail storms yesterday, one when I ducked out to walk the dogs, that was a chilling experience.

Glad I have a good sized propane heater in my concrete block house. These places get stone cold.

Drove to the border and back twice last night to pick up and later drop off a friend from San Diego. No problems, 2nd Street eastbound, border highway westbound.

DENNIS - 1-23-2010 at 09:16 AM

Intermitant showers and blue skys here. Next event is scheduled for Tuesday but, it doesn't sound bad. As long as the wind doesn't whistle, we'll be OK.

Last night was another wild one but only gale force winds with some driving rain. It's sunny this morning and the swell is a tiny bit smaller today but still impressive and the temps dropped...dang chilly now. Everyone's roofs and windows are fine...just a few puddles in some houses from rain coming through windows and doors.

Wait a minute. Isn't the party tomorrow? Can't work when there's a party goin' on. It just ain't....Baja.

This photo at 9AM this morning shows a break in the clouds looking east toward Maneadero. Still a few small showers hovering around the bay of Ensenada.

A few broken windows and some minor water damage reported around the Punta Banda Puerto Escondido 'hood here. Mostly it was a water hassle due to rains coming in horizontally. Now towels are drying on lines in partial sunshine.

We are very spoiled when we whine about not having telly or internet.

Dennis, my coffee usually brews at 06:00 daily. Either you didn't smell it or it was overwhelmed by Prema2's fish odor wafting uphill to my kitchen.
KIDDING. Sent him a note and all should be OK.

My freezer stuff was still in the 80% frozen stage last night when power was restored at 19:00. I know about the frozen stage, because I was thawing pork shoulder in front of my fireplace for Pizza on the barby.

Hope nomads are safe, dry and warm.

Just hear from friends headed north.

They barely made it into SAN QUINTIN yesterday with water over the tires in some vados.
They've no choice but to wait it out as bridges are washed out south of Ensenada.

prema2 - 1-23-2010 at 11:35 AM

Thank you Dennis for driving up the hill ...guess I can bring my maserati out yet lol

DianaT - 1-23-2010 at 11:50 AM

How far south did the storm hit---sorry if someone already said, but I did not read all the pages.

Did it go as far south as San Ignacio?

Thanks

Thought about stopping by, Doc. Just didn't want to press my luck on the hills. You must have had some really badass wind up there. I noticed the first house at the gate had their rain-gutters blown right off the house and scattered around. I could tell by looking the hooks/hangers were broken off.
Can't see any mountain top Sierra snow in your foto. Must have been too warm although Mike said he got a couple inches up by the Observatory.
Oh well...Stay dry, Doc. I mean that only in a weather sense, of course.

How Far South---Storm

DianaT - 1-23-2010 at 12:07 PM

How much further south than Bahia Asuncion did the storm reach? Did it reach San Ignacio? Did it cross to the Cortez side?

Thanks, trying to make some plans.

Can´t wait for the wild flowers!

shari - 1-23-2010 at 12:28 PM

someone just came from San Ignacio and says it rained there and there is alot of mud and puddles etc but passable...maybe wait a couple days for things to dry out a bit.

DanO - 1-23-2010 at 03:07 PM

Just got an email forward from someone at La Bocana de Santo Tomas who is unable to drive out because the road out is impassable:

"Rain, rain the entire week. Down down came the rushing water and brought with it tree trunks and debris all the way to the ocean. Farms and houses of poor farmhands were washed away. Oh by the way, the foot bridge was wrap around one of the big trees, the river bank is now right next to the road and the camping ground by Senora Delia's and Don Juan's is gone. The sand on the beach is all gone so now the waves run all the way to where the foot bridge use to be. The river finally reclaimed what rightfully belonged to it. The ocean water and the big waves were all chocolate brown as far as the eye could see."

San Quintin

Susana - 1-23-2010 at 04:07 PM

Lots of damage around the San Quintin area. Made it into town today (lots of back roads to bypass lakes), bulldozers working, people putting signs back. Saw one roof collapse. The San Simon river crosses in Papalote right now, though you can drive through it. There doesn't seem to be any propane in town. The small village of San Simon seems to have sustained severe damage.
The San Quintin bridge is fine, drove over it this morning.

irenemm - 1-23-2010 at 04:21 PM

bridge is out in Vicente Guerrero. this will take some time to get it opened. I don't know how to post picutres. but the bridge is worst then 92/93 flood. that took 2 weeks to get open and then went out again in Feb. for another 3 days. Maybe this time it will get done right.

I was surprised it went out again. I remember when it went out in the early 90s and thought it would be much stronger now.

I hope Mother nature cooperates and does not send any more rain right now.

Good luck

irenemm - 1-23-2010 at 04:30 PM

It took many years to build it but this is Mexico.
they never did it right in 78. it did not open until 82 or 83 and then only lasted until jan. 93. this is going to be a long one too as it will be both sides. the north side is sagging and will have to come down before it can be fixes. and the south side it what washed out. out of gas only for officals right now.
I wanted to live on an Island anyway
be careful what you wish for

Maybe all the people who could answer are still trapped below El Rosario....:?:

ncampion - 1-23-2010 at 07:05 PM

All's fine in Loreto, clouds some wind and cooler, but otherwise just another sh--y day in paradise.

fishbuck - 1-23-2010 at 07:16 PM

Russ posted that it was windy and rained a little at P. Chivato.
And I read that La Bocana was all messed up.

longlegsinlapaz - 1-23-2010 at 07:21 PM

How far south do you care about? La Paz has had higher than normal winds the past few days, but nowhere near hurricane strength & we did have a light rain during the night.

Thursday and Saturday around here...

David K - 1-23-2010 at 11:46 PM

Thursday, the rain mostly was gone but the seas were really rough with the wind! Here is South Carlsbad (Ponto) Beach:

Today (Saturday 1-23), we took the new truck up to Palomar Mountain using the dirt Nate Harrison Grade road... which is more fun and less busy than the main observatory road!

Used 4WD Low Range with A-TRAC to plow through the deep snow... It was beautiful up there at 5,000 feet...

We came back down to Sea Level and then walked to the end of the Oceanside Pier for the sunset at 5:11 pm.

San Diego County is hard to beat! Oh, and it is next to Baja, too!

I am so sorry for all those who suffered damage from this epic storm. I am always amazed to see those arroyos become raging rivers.
A little anecdote from mid baja....yesterday we were talking to a lobster fisherman who told us that fishermen have NEVER had to desist from lobster fishing for more than 2 days due to weather. This was the biggest storm in recent memory here...day 5 of no fishing. The lobster fishermen are very concerned and say it will be super difficult to even FIND their traps now after so many days of huge seas, wind and current. They will most likely lose many traps which will impact their income severely for this year.

Sunny, cool, cloudless day today but still enormous swells.

Our next trip to La Bocana de Santo Tomas will be for spring break in April. When I first came to La Bocana in '94 there was no drought and the river ran freely all the way to the ocean and there was no "lower road".

I've seen the beach and grass area change during storms but it always seems to restore itself after time.

David K - 1-24-2010 at 08:50 AM

The beach at Oceanside is mostly gone... all that sand, out to sea!

Storm stories and a check-in

vgabndo - 1-24-2010 at 01:34 PM

Vgabndo and Cathy are OK. Still living in a state of emergency, but we did OK. Got power and phones yesterday PM after 4 1/2 days. Still 1200 families without.
Only one fatality so far, but a dear old friend. CO poisoning.
We dodged a bullet a few nights ago. We were awake all night listening to the CRAAAAK BOOOOM of falling trees all around us. This 500 pound limb fell 40 feet and missed both our vehicles by inches.

Anyway, to our friends who may have worried, we're OK and wishing we were in Baja.
