I like the idea of the Beach bikers doing fund raising instead of just getting hand outs...gets them involved in making their club a success and good to cooperate on activities to bring the club together...way to go blanca!

I am not sure of the exact number right now---a couple have moved out of town and there are some quite new members. I will ask Chayo, the senior member. We saw him the other day when we delivered some parts that they paid for but he was not feeling well---he and one of our new really good riders missed Vizcaino as they were ill. And we have not been here for the events this year.

They also fund raise---food sales at events, T-shirt sales, and more. And some individual members have worked for us to earn new helmets. It is a good thing for them to participate. As I shared with you before, you are running your team, we are just supporters, and the team is run by the members.

We donate what we can, but we cannot pay for it all. They pay for what they can. Maybe some other property owners around here will get involved---it really is fun and they are good people.

Oh their name is Lobos Marinos and their logo is really cute---a Sea Lion riding a bike.

Diana, sure hope you are there and if I get the bikes brought down from Ensenada in time, I will give you one of them, for your team :) They are mostly young girls' bikes, not mtn bikes, but they are great and very pretty
BajaCat - you may be getting a call from Ernesto (a friend) who has committed to getting the bikes to Ensenada !! Yahoo !!

BLANCA, Ernesto came today to pick up the bikes, he's a really nice guy he is telling me that he is going in oct, Im thinking in joint him will see. here are a pix of the bikes that are going your way via Ensenada coperativa. Im still working on getting that GT I will let you know later..

BajaBlanca - 5-1-2010 at 05:21 PM

Hello and thanks to all of you for writing and keeping me updated...

Shari - we did a carwash ALL DAY and I can hardly walk, I am sooooooo tired !!!! Me and another mom worked with them ... these kids have never washed cars and were having more fun than washing - which is good but still - people want their cars washed !!!! And they were going to send them back substandard - so we had alittle talk about quality control

Another teacher named Valentin has offered to take them on a long bike ride next Saturday - they will work on resistance techniques !! Very cool

Diana - they will soon be on their own. This is so new to La Bocana that I am helping them get support from the community and then I will let them fly. My goal is to start a skateboard team, a canoe/kayak team, a windsurf team....I have huge goals dreams wishes for these kids

BajaCat - Ernesto is nice, YOU are nice, your brother in law is nice ... and so far ALL BAJA NOMADERS have been absolutely outstanding and I am proud to have the sticker on our truck :bounce::bounce::bounce:

OK .... we have gotten all the bikes across the border, time to start collecting again .... we really need bike race gloves, maybe someone has an "in" ?

shari - 5-29-2010 at 07:05 AM

today is going to be a big day as Baja Blanca will be arriving in Asuncion with the Bocana Bike Team. Every expat here (and some who arent here) has responded to the call and will be helping out on this event...nomads tiomiguel and Birdog have donated thier homes for accomodation, Campo Sirena will be the site of the BBQ for the visiting teams and hopefully the local club will be present as hosts. Food and beverages will be donated thanks to laurieboats, the plant guy, zoe and our family...Adrian will be head chef. We hope to foster goodwill between the teams by organizing fun activities and food for them the day before the race.

We had a strategy meeting last week with Shayo, the club leader to discuss ways to get the community more involved (not just expats) in helping out the local club and fund raising. This weekend's activities are a new approach and we will see if it works out. A big thanks to all of you who are helping out this weekend.

Great job Shari. I wish the race was last weekend so I could have helped out. I donated a new hydration pack to a kid while I was down and he was pretty excited. I was really hoping for a car wash, though, as my truck was filthy. Have a great time tomorrow. If the team ever gets shirts made, let me know and I'll buy a bunch.

Nan&D - 5-29-2010 at 08:15 AM

Sounds like a ton of fun!
Maybe we'll be there for the next one and we'll print up some cool t-shirts----you can be first in line Zac. Ooh there will have to be some baby ones too.

Good to see you have been motivated to get involved with the local bike clubs.

And for anyone interested in creating a new set of t-shirts to sell, this is what the other ones look like. This is their official logo and the logo is also on the front. The ones we bought are gray. Sorry we don't have a better picture.

Lol!! Yes little tiny baby ones!!

We are pleased to say the La Bocana team has arrived safe and sound and settled in to the house just a while ago, they are out exploring and hopefully meeting new friends and later on we'll set up the BBQ!

Aaaah Good times!

We are expecting the Guerrero Negro team to arrive later on so they can do a test run of the bike path, they all look super excited and are really nice kids! Can't wait to see them all mingle.

DianaT - 5-29-2010 at 02:34 PM

Great to hear that you are enjoying getting involved with the bike clubs. They are really good people.

This rider is one of our favorites from the Guerrero Negro team---hope she is still competing.

Have fun.

zforbes - 5-29-2010 at 08:04 PM

I'm here to say the BBQ was good food and great fun, and the lineup for food was l-o-n-g! Lot's of kids jiggling and squirming and playing with bikes and all the usual things kids find to do. A lot of parents came along to help with food and oversee the activities. I was tickled to see the young teenagers going from person to person to shake hands and say hello. I'm looking forward to seeing the competition tomorrow and sharing in more fun. Shari is on snapshot duty, so there will be plenty of pictures to follow.

DianaT - 5-29-2010 at 08:09 PM

Good going---happy you are involved and having fun with it.

Barbareno - 5-30-2010 at 06:17 AM

Thanks for reporting in Zoe. The competition is today then (Sunday)?

Looking forward to seeing the photo's Shari. Who's all there? Bahia Asuncion, La Bocana and Guerrero Negro from what I can tell. This is more fun then a pick nick.

zforbes - 5-30-2010 at 06:33 AM

Hi Barb, you're right about the three teams. We're headed out in a couple of hours to be there at the start of the event. As I passed the campground last night, I saw three bicycles hanging from the tree. Not sure if that's customary, or if it was kids being creative. Wouldn't it be great to plant a bicycle tree that would bear fruit every year? In a way, that is what's happening. Diane and John planted the seeds, the volunteers are the branches, and the bikes and the kids are the fruit.

shari - 5-30-2010 at 07:14 AM

It was a really fun afternoon and the food was plentiful and yummy...Asuncion club (Shayo) brought an awesome pulpo c-cktail, burgers, hot dogs, pizza, Zoe's famous potato salad, chocolate cake...I'm still full.

It was nice to see the kids hanging together...that was the idea...to foster friendship...and involve everybody.

Here is the Nomad cheerleader squad. thank you all for helping out.

here is our "plant guy who knows about bikes" helping lubricate some brakes...they're gonna need them when they come barreling down that steep part of the course!!! this is a world class mountain bike course here and PESADA...heavy duty...the kids were nearly blown off the mountain yesterday in the nasty wind

shari - 5-30-2010 at 07:24 AM

all the kids were really cool and well behaved...the La Bocana team is HUGE and really keen...they kept switching bikes....there are around 20 of e with only a few bikes between them.

I'm putting my pesos on this kid...he ROCKS!!!!

DianaT - 5-30-2010 at 07:38 AM

We are just so pleased that others have decided to join in the fun and help support the Lobos Marinos in Asuncion. We hope it will be an ongoing support.

Barb, in the Mulege District there are several teams---
Guerrero Negro
Vizcaino
San Ignacio
Rancho Carocal (sp)
Bahia Asuncion
Last year one from Mulege joined in
and now La Bocana
Don't think I forgot any.

Depending on where the race is, some teams arrive just for the day, others the night before. While it is competitive, the teams are all very friendly with each other and help each other out----there is a real sense of it all being one big team in many ways.

After the district races, there are state races etc. for which some of the riders qualify.

But the little ones are the most fun to watch---the ones that still have training wheels on their bikes. The courses are adjusted for the ages of the riders. Like in Asuncion, only the older kids and adults ride up and down the big hill, and the real little ones just ride either in or along side the stadium.

This year, in October, they are planning a race from Vizcaino over the mountains to San Fransquito on the Gulf----that should be something. I am sure the little ones won't make that ride.

BajaBlanca - 5-30-2010 at 09:20 PM

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what a fun weekend and how inspiring .... Shari, you REALLY made it possible for the teams to make friends and I will be forever grateful to you and Sirena and Adrian and Zoe and Jim and Laurie and the plant guy, Chris who saved the day for Argenis, our guy whose inner tube blew. His dad came out today, last minute to watch him ... we really needed him to finish and make his dad proud !! and of course, thanks to Juan who lets you disappear and help us out for hours and hours ....

we loved the beach house ... so much we want to come back...pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

we donated a beautiful young girl's bike to Chayo at the end of the races ... asuncion really needs help in getting new members and bikes and parts.... the people in the leagues are complaining about coming to asuncion when there are so few riders ...... Chayo also needs a special tire for a bike thats down - I will post a pic on facebook and perhaps sirena/shari can post it here ... and maybe a BajaNomader can find the tire - all I remember is 22/700 ??? I just support everyone, I understand zilch about bikes !!

I have a suggestion. bike stores in the states are so kind and into donating to poor kids.. do any of you know some stores who might help out asuncion and g negro ????? I have lucked out and have a wonderful store that is really being the BEST for us, but I promised Chayo and Homar that I wd find them a connection. if anyone can give me a lead in san diego, I will follow up and make it happen !!!! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

thanks again to all of you in asuncion - this is a weekend to remember :)forever ....

Go Blanca---we hope someone can find another connection---we had no luck with any of the stores in the south bay area where we are. The one store that promised help never really came through--and we hit them all. Chris, the plant guy is going to work on some in his neck of the woods.

We did have a lot of help and support from our nephew with Giant who helped out a lot a few years ago and financial support from some donors from the Baja Nomads and elsewhere, but the nephew started a family and things have changed. And there were others from the beginning who worked to obstruct our efforts to support this activity for reasons we do not fully understand.

And risking once again at being told we are sending guilt trips, this is the first year that any of the ex-pat property owners in Bahia Asuncion have shown an interest. We really are happy that Shari decided for the first time this year to get involved and brought a few of her followers along with her. Whatever it takes for the sake of the children.

We know the tires Chayo is looking for and they are quite expensive. After our recent donations, we are rather tapped out right now and he spends a lot of money out of his own pocket. So we do hope you can find some more donors. Just for information for others, we do get discounts from the bike shop at REI when we buy directly from the shop and not just the store.

If there are bikes available, there will be riders. So Blanca, thank you and go for it---you and your efforts we will support. And kudos to Shari for deciding this year to jump in and support this activity.

We are bringing another bike down---it is old but in great shape.

The teams have a real tradition of being friends and helpful to each other, and it sounds like you will continue with the long time tradition.

Good---glad to hear that. And we do wish her luck.

The bike store that said they would sponsor the Lobos Marinos was a real disappointment. We had spent a lot of time canvassing stores, and we were thrilled when we found the one. His name, Rick Nunez is even on the front of the uniforms.

He seemed so excited and even added the team to his web page---as his team in Mexico. We bought a jersey for him that he proudly displayed in his store.

But in the end, all he donated were a few small boxes of junk---used parts are one thing, junk is something else. We kept trying, but it did not work. His effort was like some others who want to make a big splash to look good, like an infomercial, and then fade away.

So other than the outright donations from others, and some discounts on parts, the bike shop thing did not work, and many in this area are chain stores, -----but, that is not to say that it will not work somewhere.

Blanca, we know you are really dedicated to this and best of luck to you. If you do have better luck with a bike store around here, we can help on this end. Meanwhile, we will collect what we can, but a real sponsor is what would make the real difference.

we all thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and thank you Blanca for working so hard to bring it all together...it was very heartening to see everyone helping each other out and making new friends. I will work on the photos today.

My tough little guy in the photo won 1st place in his division and then he continued to ride behind the other divisions too...he actually did the 8 km course on his little bike behind the adults...Chris the plant guy managed half the course and was cheered loudly at the finish line!!! way to go chris

Actually dianne, this is NOT the first time I've helped out the bike club...I realize I have not contributed the amount you have but I do what I can...I'm pretty busy but this particular time I had the time to responded to a direct request for help from Blanca and we all pulled together a successful event thanks to our amigos here...(please dont call my friends "followers"...I find it rather offensive...we have cultivated meaningful friendships over the last few years where we support each other and share wonderful experiences together.)

Hi Blanca- no we have not met yet but I'm sure you met my mother, Zoe, over the weekend. We're expecting our second baby any day and plan to return to BA in July for a quick visit. Maybe we can arrange a visit then. Your enthusiasm is contagious:biggrin:

BajaBoy :)))))))))))))))))))))))))) I saw your house !!! It is so cute !! Congrats on a FANTASTIC MOM, and on the baby that is coming .... your mom gave me such a tickle when she said she thought I would be a young spring chicken AHAHAHAH so farrrrrrrrrrrr from the truth but I am young at heart

I am contacting connections folks, keep em coming and we will pair each connection with one of the other teams. Give me a name, give me the store, give me some dirt the rich sponsor who is your neighbor (I am just saying...)

totally kidding, folks, just trying to get us laughing a little. I am wroking the emails and there are some stores out there who are just waiting for someone in Baja to help. Then we call on the BajaNomaders to bring stuff down !!

SiReNiTa - 6-1-2010 at 09:17 AM

Adrian and I might be going up to Ensenada in the next few weeks and bringing back his car, although we can't really fit bikes on/in it if there are any parts or boxes you need brought down we will gladly find some space for them!

We had loads of fun this weekend and really enjoyed meeting the rest of the people from the other bike clubs, the kids were soooo cute and serious about the competitions!

Although I must admit I very much enjoyed the yummy food at the BBQ...(wonder why )
Big thanks to everyone that made it possible!!

He Got Game!

La Bocana kids ROCK!!

shari - 6-1-2010 at 02:31 PM

he soooo won big time....by a long shot...then he wanted to enter all the other catagories for older kids too...they didnt let him but he rode along behind anyway and ended up riding the 6 km course on his little bike....that's my guy!!!

At the BBQ, while everyone else was eating, chatting and fooling around, this guy was on his bike practising!!!

Chris helped him lubricate his gears which probably gave him the edge!!

AND man can this kid tell jokes too....he told the whole group so many long long involved story type jokes...he is one to watch!! I dont know his name but they call him Tololoche which means one of those big stand up bass guitars...and he is BIG in character.

His quieter brother also won his division as did a sweet girl also from La Bocana...what they lacked in blingy uniforms and cool bikes they made up for in spirit!!!

here is a link to a little slide show I'm working on of the weekend event...man the kids sure are cute! enjoy

breaking news flash ....another child came to the door last night, 9 yrs old, and wants to join the team ...just when I thought I had all the sponsors for the team uniforms :)

I believe we came out in the news today under Mulege = sports ... if not today, then tomorrow, hey ! this is manana land

time to get busy baking cakes and washing cars and garage selling !!! Got another kid to help :bounce::bounce::bounce:

BAJACAT - 6-2-2010 at 05:59 PM

GREAT job Nomads, I will keep and eye for more good bikes. To compete in this type of races you need a good sound bike, so they are hard to come by in the swap meets... but I will keep trying, good job Blanca and Shari, like I always say, been a Nomad is great.....

BajaBlanca - 6-2-2010 at 08:18 PM

Bajacat !!!! how are you doing buddy !!! long time no news ... keep your eyes out, a mountain bike will show up ...but if you have a chance to visit ANY bike store, they are always interested in helping out poor kids - at least this has been my experience .... Let's work together on this ?!

any bike is good for training and when we have enough, we can sell some to buy a mtn bike :)

newsflash: :tumble::tumble: we got a sponsor for the new kid: Duncan ... you can find his picture on the website I made for them:

http://sites.google.com/site/bocanabeachbikers/

I saw a bunch of kids training today .... quite impressive. do I sound proud ???? cause i am :bounce:

thanks Natalie Ann - Nena and thanks for the info on the site error, misspelled google oooops Now fixed.

Last weekend everyone helped - the moms of the boys who went to the weekend race were fantastic - they made a quesadilla breakfast for ALL OF US and cleaned that kitchen top to bottom .... the sponsors as usual are outstanding and I am constantly amazed at how generous Americans/Canadians are. what a superb quality to have in our genes

have a great day everyone and keep those connections to bike shops coming in !! I will contact them one by one til we get one for each club ASUNCION - GUERRERO - BOCANA

shari - 6-4-2010 at 08:36 AM

Just back from a quickie scuba dive in Mulege...last night we had a little powow brainstorming session about ways to promote mountain biking in central baja...cooperating with the clubs in our area. We came up with some outstanding ideas..cant wait to start to impliment them.

Chris the plant guy...soon to be the plant bike guy...is off to the other side armed with material to make flyers to put in the bike shops and some great ideas to bring attention to the amazing courses in this area. It is cool to see him so motivated to get back into biking...he's getting his bike ready to ride with the team!!

here is the link to the newspaper report...well done amiga

Antulio Buckowicz is Mulege's Bike Club advisor and bikeman. He'd love to get onto the regional circuit with his kids. Perhaps your team leader can confer with him soon.

Again, Everyone: job well done, thanks!

shari - 6-4-2010 at 11:14 AM

great idea Mulegena...perhaps you can have a chat with him too. Something we would like to do is help create and promote a mountain bike circuit for tourists in cenral baja. A package could be designed with a guide of the various trails and courses from GN-Mulege using the circle route through the coastal villages on the pacific side so bikers can visit and be shown the trails by the local club members...you can ride with the team as they train!!

We think this might be a neat way to raise money for the clubs while fostering international goodwill and raising awareness of the sport here in baja. There are some world class singletrack courses here that I'm sure bikers would love to ride and the locals could serve as guides.

BajaBlanca - 6-4-2010 at 02:51 PM

exciting times in Baja California Sur !!! outstanding ideas .... great prospects for the future .... cant wait to see our first international guests ..

I have tons of contacts in Europe as I used to teach ESL...ergo ....let's get some news and ads into those European papers too...sound like a good plan ?

Shari - lets work together on the promo package ... you are incredibly talented !!!! I will get photos of the trail here and start writing too

Baja Bucko - 6-5-2010 at 09:15 AM

Ok Ok...like I need a NEW project.

When I cross the border headed to Mecca my truck is ripping at the seams with my mule-packing stuff and supplies for at least 3 wks, a bunch of 50 lb salt blocks and protein buckets (for the ranchers), school supplies and books for the mountain kids, and things for the ranchers and the women-folk who rarely leave the hills....now just where can I find the kind of bikes you guys are looking for that I can afford? The next question will be for me-WHERE will I put these bikes??? Maybe on top?

Seriously I would like to bring down a bike or two when I head south again in November so please advise on what kind and how much...will start accumulating helmets.

And to the people who emailed me-yes, we got a certain little boy seen at Shriners' in Los Angeles after a year of work to do so....learned that Shriners is only orthopedic and burns and doesn't do neuro...found out he has CP...soooo now working on leads to CP materials for teaching in Spanish bright kids who can't talk...this kid is gonna learn his letters and how to read!!!

shari - 6-5-2010 at 12:10 PM

BB...you do so much for your "team" (los rancheros) already...it is sweet you always want to do just a bit more! Sure, bikes can go on top...or...maybe a helpful nomad who doesnt have mule gear can offer to take one down...just a thought. It is amazing what has been and can be orchestrated through this board with a little time, effort and coordination.

Of course trail bikes are best, but as Blanca said they can sell other bikes to raise money to buy the equipment, uniforms, gloves, parts etc. that they need. We can arrange to have stuff dropped off at other places too if you arent coming into our neck of the desert....like Vizcaino, GN, Mulege etc. and they will find their way to those who need it most.

thanks for thinking of the kids.

BajaBlanca - 6-5-2010 at 03:49 PM

wow.... I agree 100% with Shari .... thanks for thinking of the kids ..if you find the room, here are the tips I have:

1. apparently one can get a used bike carrier for 3 or 4 bikes for $20 on craigs list or on ebay or swap meets. swap meets also have bikes for $20 - $30 each - any bike, really, absolutely any bike in any shape is fantastic. I fit needs TLC, send me a u2u, I have a contact who is fab with makeovers in San Diego :)

2. our fishing coop in ensenada will happily truck the bikes down to us. just let me know when u will be there and I will coordinate !! that wasy, you have less distance to travel with extra weight etc.

3. every donator gets a free night at our B & B, so, you are invited officially to come to LA BOCANA - here is the link:

www.labocanahotel.com

happy trails !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanksssssssssssssssssssssssssss

BajaBlanca - 6-5-2010 at 08:28 PM

the boys did a carwash today ... and they worked so hard .... it started at 9 with us getting stuff together and car washing per se started at 10. and ended aT 5 pm.

and they want to do it again tomorrow .. so if your car needs cleaning, you know where to come :)

we gave them lunch and dinner and they have agreed to split into 3 groups and each group will work one weekend during the month

they also sold raffles for 15 tacos and the winner was chosen today and is probably eating them right now - that would be Angulo munching !!

we also started a new raffle for 50 sushi and a cake with 2 possible winners - boy are these kids motivated to make this happen or WHAT
:bounce::tumble::yes:

BajaBlanca - 6-7-2010 at 01:01 PM

4 beautiful B E A U T I F U L bikes delivered by our coop today ... wow ..they are sooooooooooooooo nice !! thanks BajaNomads .... thanks God .....

10 helmets should be arriving soon

5 more bikes and all the members in la bocana will have one and I can start the team in Abreojos !!!!!!!!!!!! Feel free to visit your local swap meets - you wd be surprised at the bike deals they have !!! $20 buys a really nice bike ... good enough to practice on

we have an urgent need now for replacement parts - so anything ANYTHING you have will help= seats, shocks, tires, brakes, u name it !!

june 8 update: bike club mtg with spaghetti - fresh sqeezed OJ - choc cake from 4 - 7 pm and we have ta daaaaaaaaaaaa 6 new kids ... now I am officially STRESSED ... need bikes .... need more angels :saint::saint::saint:

BajaBlanca - 9-12-2010 at 05:18 AM

Update - the bike club is training every day and in the heat of the desert, this is really hard work. They are still doing carwashes averaging 2 a month and we have garage sales that really boost our coffers - if anyone is coming to the area and has household items, clothes etc - feel free to donate. A little bag goes a long way !

Many of you have said you will bring some bikes down Sept Oct Nov - I am counting on you !!

Newest agenda item = we are sponsoring the buying of books for 2 high school club teens who can't afford to pay and were going to drop out. I have promised to start a college fund for any kid in the surf or bike club who wants to go to college. I will write more about this idea as it progresses. Turns out college tuition is $1200 dollars a year !!!

So reasonable and I am thrilled to be a part of this dream for them.

BAJACAT - 9-12-2010 at 10:48 PM

Good job Blanca, but to many projets can steal energy and time from others... it's nice to try to help... you are already doing so much for la Bocana, that I don't want to see you get burn out from all the projets... Im still looking for bikes for you... maybe a trip in oct or Nov... don't know jet...
Thank you & Les for all the things that you do for your town..

PS. thats what I think so don't punish me for doing so,,

BajaBlanca - 9-13-2010 at 07:05 PM

Baja Cat - I have so much help from everyone, that is how I do my projects !!!! Thanks so much for caring amiguito !!!!!!

I never knew that the kids had trouble payiing for school, I am a teacher and this hits HOME. I can't let it slide .... I wd rather let the bike club be run by someone else than let the education fall thru the cracks :)

I am, by nature, an over-achiever. Very competitive with myself and if I am not really busy with lots of challenges, I get bored. Then I have to move away form Baja and we DON'T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN jejejeje :lol:

I love life here, I love all the projects !!! BAJA CAT: your help with the bikes was one of the coolest most amazing moments of my llife !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the positive spirit !!!

I may see if I can help the kids out when I FINALLY get to join Dra. Bajabass down south. Anything that keeps kids on a positive course is huge! On either side of the border.
