Malarrimo Beach- Camping/Beachcombing trip

 Pages:  1  2

Hook - 9-21-2004 at 08:24 PM

Yes, I know what I need, legally, to go past G.N.

I like the idea of a primitive site, too, on Sat night. But I will likely be driving on about 4-5 hours sleep the night before. Driving much off Hwy 1 (after GN shopping, gassing at Vizcaino, dinner, etc.) could mean another long day. The wife will not be a happy camper. :fire: We can make a decision when I arrive in GN.

Still trying to decide what to do after I see Malarrimo on my limited time. Maybe San Borja will be possible since it gets me on the way home. It will probably depend on the condition of the roads in the Vizcaino.

G. NEGRO ...

cristobal - 9-22-2004 at 07:52 PM

It has been almost 2 weeks since I crossed at GUERRERO NEGRO. I know what the rules are ... but I misplaced my BIRTH CERTIFICATE. When we stopped a lady asked to see my VISA and I told her that I didn't think they were needed if I didn't spend over 7 DAYS in BCS. She said You DON'T have to pay if you DON'T stay 7 days. She filled out my VISA with my DRIVERS LICENSE .......
I said MUCHAS GRACIAS .....:bounce::bounce:
I am returnong in an 18 wheeler in a few days to TIJUANA. They never get checked for VISAS .....

:o;D:rolleyes::yawn::smug::P

mcgyver - 9-22-2004 at 08:18 PM

Cristobal, Sounds like you lucked out on that one.Are you coming on the trip? I came through there about 10 AM 1 day and they did not ask and did not spray the tires or nothing, I parked just the other side and was waiting for a friend to catch up and was watching the action. They changed inspectors and at the same time 2 groups of Canadians pulled up and pretended ingnorance of everything, they took down all their info and then made them turn around and go back to Ensenada. I have talked to others who say they never get checked!
Go figure!

David K - 9-22-2004 at 08:22 PM

Thanks CRISTOBAL... Now I can really believe the up to 'SEVEN DAY FREE' FM-T (Tourist Card), is for real!

Oh, Baja Spell Checker says there's no A (anymore) in TIJUANA... But he loves the way you capitalize Baja place names! :bounce::bounce::yes:

malarrimo

rockman - 9-22-2004 at 09:19 PM

Malarrimo trip, Oct, 2001:
4 vehicles, GMC Yukon, Ford Explorer, LandRover Discovery and ??? had no problem driving from near San Jose de Castro to within 300 meters of Malarrimo Beach. Actually, a 2-wheel drive high-clearance pickup could make it.
But you don't want to drive any further than the obvious campsite back from the beach; soft sand, and, down the beach, some quicksand. One of our troops had a very handy wide-wheel Suzuki motorbike that handled the beach well, but it started to sink on the beach east of the arroyo mouth. A quad would probably work well, but don't try to drive anything you could not manhandle out of softspots.
The beachcombing was actually disappointing. The beach is littered with plastic and styrofoam.
Weather was wonderful, but breezy.
We will be at our place in Loreto and Punta Final from 18 Oct to 16 Nov, and might rendezous if a specific time/place is established.
For questions, contact me direct: normanc@olypen.com

mcgyver - 9-22-2004 at 11:19 PM

Rockman, Thanks for the info, maybe Javier deposited something! Hook and I are going to meet at the Malarrimo resturante sometime on Satruday Oct. 30. We are waiting on others who have expressed an interest to firm up their plans. I will be coming from Puertocitos so I will be passing Punta Final early saturday, Butch from Punta Bufeo has also said he would like to come. We could meet at the Punta Final-Hiway 5 intersection or CoCo's or ??? I was planing on coming to Bufeo on Friday and spending the night there, Corky 1 may also be joining in alomg yhere

cristobal - 9-23-2004 at 05:53 PM

MCGYVER ... the key with the spraying is tell them you have someone who is sick in your car and they won't spray.
and .....YES ....I am coming on the trip ... I should be driving an older TOYOTA pick-up hauling my SUZUKI 500 QUAD.
I just wanted the inspector to shake her finger at me ....... or slap my hand or something ........ for NOT having my BIRTH CERTIFICATE ....... just shows you where the priorities are ..... they just want you to spend some money in BCS .... that is all .....

DAVID K ... thanks for doing the spell check for me. When I get in a hurry and don't think about it long enough ... those things happen. :bounce::bounce::bounce:

:o:rolleyes::smug::O:wow:;D:P:fire:

mcgyver - 9-23-2004 at 08:51 PM

cristobal, Right on! Your rig sounds perfect! You by no authority whats so ever are hereby appointed guide for this fandango! Your main job will be to negociate for Lobster!!!:bounce:
I have a Taco SR5 4wd with popup camper and I am thinking about towing my Tracker also, mainly for more storage of gas and water and to run around in after arrival.
What do you think? Do you have the exact milage for the dirt portion from Vizcaino and it condition? Washboard?

surfer jim - 9-24-2004 at 07:30 AM

I'm still sitting on the sidelines for this...lots of things going on this time of year and I have a limited number of vacation days at work....will wait and see.....

Good, recent road report.......

Hook - 9-24-2004 at 08:55 AM

......will be pretty important in helping me make my final decision on going to Malarrimo. Bad washboard is a problem for my wife and I'm not going to fly over it at 40+mph, unless it's pretty shallow. I'm showing 130 miles or so from Vizcaino, if we take the route thru Tortuga. HOw much of that is paved now.

I assume this area must have gotten some substantial rains from Javier, so a recent report will be welcome.

Paved Road

Skipjack Joe - 9-24-2004 at 09:54 AM

The road leaving Vizcaino is paved up to the fork where the left goes to Asuncion and the right goes to Tortuga. That's about 25 miles from Vizcaino (40 km), I think.

bajalou - 9-24-2004 at 10:15 AM

Last time I was there - a couple years ago - road was paved from Viscaino Jct about 20 miles - then the wahsboard begins. Side roads are almost as bad as the main one - but at 40 it wasn't too bad. Those who wanted to do 20 really got beat up. We turned to Malarimo Beach about 50 miles from the end of pavement. Still a long way from Bahia Tortuga. Don't hage the GPS coord's but probably can get them if someone wants them. Side note - stopped for a break coming back out at a spot with a view of the area and found a GPS on the ground. Put in new batteries, reset the contrast and I still use it as a backup today. Never know what you'll find or where,

Washboard

Frigatebird - 9-24-2004 at 03:42 PM

is worldclass after the pavement ends at the Asuncion/Tortugas split. We were there in early August and shook loose a rear shock. Not finding the bolt, and lacking a replacement, we turned back our heavily loaded Toy after a few miles. Will have to try for the beach next time...maybe in October/November. :light:

The rains

jrbaja - 9-24-2004 at 03:49 PM

are what can turn a washboard road back into a smooth ride. :light:

mcgyver - 9-24-2004 at 04:51 PM

Hook, I fully understand about your wifes problem with washboard! If you want to cancel don't hesitate on my account! I am very flexable! BoB H. has expressed interest in a later date in November which would be fine with me if it does not fall between the 15th and 22nd. No one else has commited so its wide open as far as I am concerned, I am going sometime soon iregardless of anyone else,

BajaLou, I would definatley appreciate those GPS readings, besides, that is my GPS you found!:bounce:
PM me your location in San Felipe and I will stop and visit when I get back down, I am for sure ready for some Baja time!!

jrbaja, Last year I took the road that runs from Hiway 1 at Punta Prieta NNE to the BOLA Hiway at KM 13 after a big rain, it was so smooth with sand wash that I was going 70 MPH, that is until I came upon a Boojum across the road. I didn't know those things were so heavey!

Yep,

jrbaja - 9-24-2004 at 05:22 PM

the arroyos going up to Baja Bamboo were actually smoother than the carretera and like riding on air.
But fallen trees at 70 mph could change things drastically. Ouch ! Cuidado Amigo.

bbbait - 9-24-2004 at 09:14 PM

Hi Mac, Wayno here. I have been watching things unfold on here. I am still going on the week of the full moon, 10/ 24th>. Things are divisive here as you might expect, as it gets closer. Part of my crew is going the following week, to include the prerun for
the 1000, which looks like when you
guys are going. I may come down next week 9/27> and check in with you, to touch bases. I want to go
down and get drunk at San Felipe and Gonzaga. (Full moon again, must be part vampire) Are you going to be around, Tues or Wed?

mcgyver - 9-24-2004 at 10:18 PM

Sure Wayno, I will be home all day Tuesday and till about noon on wednesday, come on down. As you have read nothing is set in stone except I have to be back in Yuma before the 18th and cain't go back to Baja till the 22nd, after that I should not have anything for a long time. I was supposed to run a pit at my entrance road for the race but will not even be able to do that. I guess I better get out and take a ballpean hammer to all the nuts on my new Taco because I am going, washboard or not.

Wayno, thanks for the funny email... I liked the one: "sometimes you just got to cool that thing off!":lol::lol::O

GPS

bajalou - 9-25-2004 at 04:44 PM

I downloaded all my early waypoints into the computer and then it crashed, but I am trying to locate the printout I made before the crash. I'll keep looking but in the meantime it is near 27,32 114,27

The owner of Rancho Santa Monica and her son pointed it out to us. He showed up the next night with a friend and a boat to go fishing with.

Of course, I'll return your lost GPS - it is Brand ? and Model ? and of course you remember the 8 waypoints that were in it.

If I find the exact Wpts, you'll be the first to know.

mcgyver - 9-25-2004 at 06:33 PM

Baja lou, Thanks for your efforts, sometimes its hard to locate something even with a GPS, like the airplane wreck in Valle Laguna Seca, I was right on David K's numbers and still almost ran over it before I saw it!
OH!, yes the lost GPS is XXX and the waypoints are *.*x and ,well just give it to me!!

David K - 9-25-2004 at 08:11 PM

Thanks Max... Although I do not have the plane wreck waypoint listed there, I did make my 'Viva Baja GPS Waypoint List' easier to find... It is now on my front page at http://vivabaja.com right above the maps links.

The 1905 maps that Bajalou made available for us all to enjoy are also added to my front page.

I love maps and looking at a map of Baja takes me there.

The 1962 road maps from the Lower California Guidebook (by Howard Gulick) are really awesome and they are there, too. They are the maps that first guided my parents and I into Baja beginning way back in 1965.

mcgyver - 9-25-2004 at 09:19 PM

David K., Yes the reason I didn't post it was you gave me that one and another futher north and I didn't know if you wanted them posted, your numbers were right on and I was watching the seconds click off and had not seen any airplane! But there is not much left and after all that rain last year the weeds were 4 foot high, I stopped just before I hit a seat! I have not made it to the other crash site yet but will try on this trip south to Malarrimo to catch it one way or the other.
I like Baja Lou's 3D program too!! Sure wish he would give me my GPS back.:bounce:

World Class washboard?

Hook - 9-27-2004 at 09:33 AM

I dont think fighting that is going to work for me with only a week down there, not to mention the physical effect on my wife. Unless I try flying over the washboard, it appears it could take the better part of two days to cross all that. Not worth it on a week's vacation; will have to wait until I get two weeks or more to attempt Malarrimo. Also not willing to fly across it at 40mph with the Lance on the back.

I guess I'm on the sidelines for now.

Malarimo trip

Butch - 9-27-2004 at 12:19 PM

McGyver; Sorry not to reply earlier but have been out of the loop for a week or so. Spent a week at Lk Powell on the hsbt! We are still going and flexible on dates. Looks like folks are settling in on the first week of Nov ?? I have changed my departure point, will now trailer to GN or thereabouts. Haven't driven south of GN in several years, what do we need to be "legal" besides passports and where is best place to get a visa if needed. Never had to deal with this in the plane ! Will stay in touch and watch posts for final meet up date and location.

cristobal - 9-27-2004 at 04:16 PM

BUTCH .... If you have your PASSPORT ... all of your VISA problems can be taken care of in G. NEGRO .....

:bounce::bounce:

:o:wow::O:rolleyes::smug::P

I have been in transit .....

cristobal - 9-27-2004 at 04:45 PM

Hello guys .... My first posts since SAN IGNACIO .....:bounce:
What a return trip ..... I will write a report soon .....

skipjack joe ..... The paved portion from VIZCAINO to the ASUNCION turnoff is about half of the 106 MILE total .... or 50 miles.
From ASUNCION to SANTA MONICA turnoff is just over 25 MILES of washboard.
SANTIAGO told me SATURDAY that many of the main roads in TORTUGAS are paved
and the NEW road is headed to the ASUNCION hookup but.... probably NOT too far yet .....

MCGYVER ... You know that if you leave it up to me .... we will be eating LONGOSTA every night. Are you guys sure that you can handle that ..?????? Did I tell you that 10 years ago I returned from TORTUGAS with 50 LOBSTERS in my IGLOO ice chest ..??? remind me to tell you that one over dinner one night .... By the way SANTIAGO contributed to my LOAD of 50 that trip.

I think the extra vehicle is a great idea. Something light with GOOD tires is perfect.

The CONDITION of the road past the ASUNCION turnoff depends on a couple of things:
When it last rained....:bounce:
When it was last graded .....:bounce:

EVERYONE involved ..................................

Please bring an EXTRA ice chest or something to keep your own PERSONAL stash of LOBSTERS cold until you can safely store them in your freezer at home. We can arrange to have the proper paperwork taken care of in TORTUGAS.

I don't know about you guys .... but I am starting to get hungry.

:o;D:O:wow::smug::P:P:P:P:P

[Edited on 10-21-2004 by cristobal]

I dont suppose.....

Hook - 9-27-2004 at 05:05 PM

....I can meet you guys at the Vizcaino junction with my ice chest and then get it from you on your way out????:P

Great! Lobsters are about the only thing that might get my wife over that washboard.

My Proposal

mcgyver - 9-27-2004 at 07:29 PM

How's about we meet Sunday October 31st in the parking lot of the Malarrino Resturant in GN and proceed from there? It seems that everyone is now flexable on exact date and I am for sure ,so if anyone needs to move it a couple of days we could do that too! Wayno from BBait called me last nite and they left today so maybe we will get a report from them before we go. Hook ,I don't really think the washboard will bother your rig as heavy as you say it is if you air down considerabaly but you know your circumstances, wish you could make it.
I have got all my business concluded as of today( Haloluh!!) and will put the camper on and start loading for Baja and leave Yuma on Monday for Puertocitos to open up my campo for the winter, I have about a weeks worth of work there and then I will be ready to roll!! If anyone wahts to go to San Borga for the celebration there on the 10th of October and spend a few days exploring Guadalupe let me know ASAP because after the 5th my internet time will be limited to the 8th or 9th of October at the Net in SF and then I will be on the road south, I will probably hit BOLA sometime between the 16th and 18th of October for visiting and resuppy and Internet and will get every ones final answer for meeting at GN on Halloween!
Butch: as said you can get FMT at GN, don't bring veggies because they will take them, buy them in GN.Otherwise nothing special.
Christobal: Have you never heard of Lobster Poisioning???:bounce:

Anyone else? grab on this is going to be a blast!!

San Borja

David K - 9-27-2004 at 08:12 PM

Please spend some time with Jose and family who live there year round. They are not Catholic and do not drink liquor... the fiesta is not a happy time for them because of the alcohol consumed on mission grounds. If you have some school supplies to drop off with them, I am sure it will be appreciated.

Because they aren't Catholic, the new bishop at Guerrero Negro stripped away the mission keys from Jose so he can no longer provide tours INSIDE the mission as he had done for years. He does provide tours of the many other area historic sites, including petroglyphs and pinturas...

mcgyver - 9-27-2004 at 08:45 PM

David k. , Yep , Polly has already got stuff togather for them and batterys for the radio, last year the only ones I had where in my camera and GPS because we left the MH at BOLA so I gave the boy the ones from the GPS. This year I have a good supply because we have been watching for sales and saving cupons for them.
Is it a good ideal for us to be there during the festival or should we wait till later?
We are going over to Bahia Guadalupe if the lake is dry enough and check out the canyon that runs to the west from the big pink you know what that sticks up just west of the road. (Photo attached) I saw a lot of mountain lion sign last year in there but I still want to check some of those caves, I will bring fire crackers to clear them out!

David K - 9-27-2004 at 08:53 PM

I think that rock is called La V**** Ha!

The road across the north dry lake past other plane wreck goes into Arroyo Candeleros... and that canyon is beautiful! Even colorblind me could see colors there! http://vivabaja.com/1202

I don't know if you should avoid San Borja then... just expect the entire region to show up, and get drunk!

Although I don't go there,

jrbaja - 9-27-2004 at 09:59 PM

I'm sure they have benefited from the Mexican governments assistance with solar power.
A battery charger and rechargeables will work way longer and for way less money than depending on batteries.:light:

Malarimo trip

Butch - 9-28-2004 at 04:59 PM

McGyver; Is our final destination Punta Malarimo or Malarimo ? Two seperaste points on AAA map.
Any idea on where I can secure tow vehicle and trailer around Viscaino ?

mcgyver - 9-28-2004 at 05:50 PM

Butch, I have no ideal, Cristobal can answer both questions I am sure. I have never had a problem finding a place to leave rigs in Baja and have never lost a thing doing so. Are you stateside or Baja now?

There's a restaurant

jrbaja - 9-28-2004 at 06:18 PM

motel and garage that I'm sure wouldn't mind keeping your stuff safe. Left side of road in Vizcaino. Nasty potholes south of Vizcaino.

Final destination ? Malarimo or Punta Malarimo?

Butch - 9-29-2004 at 09:26 AM

Thanks JrBaja for the info. McGyver I am in the states and will be until I head south for meet up in GN. Will depart AZ on 10-29.

MALARRIMO or PUNTA MALARRIMO ...???

cristobal - 9-29-2004 at 12:38 PM

As we approach MALARRIMO BEACH from the SOUTH after a 20+ mile run thru the sand from the SANTA MONICA or CASTRO camp TURNOFF ...... the PEAK that ends almost right at the SHORE to the ..... WEST ..... is called PUNTA MALARRIMO. :bounce::bounce:
I am sure we will be climbing it and others close by to take PICS if the FOG clears up in the afternoon. The views of the coastline with an occasional fish camp are the best.

For a few dollars ..... any of the many ranchos in the area .... would be willing to watch your trailer and tow vehicle for you. :o

:o:wow::O:rolleyes::smug::P

How is that route?

Hook - 9-29-2004 at 01:11 PM

I assumed you all would be going all the way around thru Tortuga. Howis the short cut?

CASTRO in ..... or TORTUGAS in ....?????

cristobal - 9-29-2004 at 01:47 PM

I have never taken the CASTRO route to MALARRIMO ... but have heard many stories that the sand can be very nasty at times .... and to never try it SOLO ...... which we wouldn't be doing ....
On the other hand the road from TORTUGAS is graded often by the COOP to the last fish camp (EL QUEEN) which is at the 18 MILE mark on a total of 35 MILES.
I like the route in from TORTUGAS .... but who am I ...??? I am just tagging along ... trying to have a good time .....:bounce: I will go anywhere .....:bounce:

:o:rolleyes::O:wow::smug::P

mcgyver - 9-29-2004 at 05:20 PM

cristobal,YOU DE LOBSTER MAN ON POINT.

Who all going has radio? I have : CB (2),FRS(3) hand held,Ham 2 meters, Marine. Makes it nice if everyone can communicate with out stopping.
I think Butch is trailering his buggy to GN, Corky1 is hauling his narly dirt bike, I am draging my Geo Tracker, mainly for cargo space and as backup when I go to Bahia Guadalupe before we meet up at GN, What about the rest of you?

Mallarimo Haloween in the full moon trip

mcgyver - 10-3-2004 at 04:51 PM

COMMUNICATIONS

OK, I will ask one more time before I leave for Baja in the morning, What kind of comms do you people who are coming on the trip have?
Has any one else decided to join our outing? Hook are you going to try it?
I will probably check the forum Saturday the 9th before I head futher south. Adios!

Mon 4th

bajalou - 10-3-2004 at 04:57 PM

If you're coming thru S.F. tomorrow the 4th, give me a holler on Mar 74. I'll be in town part of the day getting fuel, paying Telnor etc. Maybe a cold one or taco or something.

mcgyver - 10-3-2004 at 07:31 PM

Lou, I will have to catch you Saturday,we will be late, both rigs loaded to and onto the top so we hope to make KM 54 before dark and get the house open.

My trip likely delayed

Hook - 10-7-2004 at 08:54 AM

Mac and others,

It looks increasingly likely that I will not be able to head to Baja until the Thanksgiving weekend. Wife's employer has rescinded her vacation for that period due to her importance to some process or another. The usual mid-management F. U.

Will post if this changes yet again.

Does anybody know

jrbaja - 10-7-2004 at 09:17 AM

who all is going on this trip ?

mcgyver - 10-8-2004 at 12:52 PM

[Edited on 10-8-2004 by Bob H]

cristobal - 10-8-2004 at 04:14 PM

Good luck!

Malarrimo Beach Trip/Road Report

mcgyver - 10-29-2004 at 10:13 AM

I am in GN to resuply and wait on Cristobal, Corky and the rest to meet up, weather is super! All roads from BOLA to San Fransquito to El Arco to Hiway 1 are in very good condition despite last months rains, only a few washouts remain unrepaired. Watched the eclispe of the moon from the abandoned town of Poso Aleman and it looked like a big pumpkin you could touch, old town spooky after moon went dowd and wind came up! Off to the beach sunday am.

David K - 10-29-2004 at 05:13 PM

Max, it sounds wonderful!! I can visualize the eclipse at Pozo Aleman (yes JR, I have been there too!)... There was only one old man living there then. In the Jack Swords photos at: http://community-2.webtv.net/DrDrip/swords/page3.html are pictures of the mine equipment still laying about. The link to Jack's non-mission pictures is in my Baja Notebook (link at the bottom of my posts).

Have a great Malarrimo trip Max, and anyone else joining you!

VEHICLE problems ...

cristobal - 10-29-2004 at 05:51 PM

I am going to be a few days late .... I am having some FUEL PUMP problems today :fire:
I am looking at meeting up with the group ..... TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY .... I need to spend some time in TORTUGAS to take care of these " BUG" problems that we are going to have ....:bounce::P:P:P:P:bounce:

When you find the place that you want to camp ..... leave me some directions on MALARRIMO beach .....:o I will find you ... :o I will bring dinner ....;D:P:P

There is an INTERNET cafe in town next to the POLICE station. I can check there before I head to the beach.
I am NOT sure if TORTUGAS has ICE. Better to load up in GUERRERO NEGRO or SAN IGNACIO before heading in ....
I would suggest taking the route in past EL QUEEN. There is only ONE road in.....:bounce: it is a couple of miles of UP-grade before several miles of DOWN-grade. Turn to the beach only when you get to the FIRST ARROYO. You will know it when you see it ....TRUST ME .... Any earlier the roads dead-end. You are one mile from the beach. I understand there is a nice sheltered camping area behind sand dunes about a quarter of a mile back from the beach ....somewhere ..... I know you guys can find it ....:wow:

Malarrimo Beach Trip from Hell

mcgyver - 11-6-2004 at 12:56 PM

Well I am back! I can only hope that Butch and Corky made it back to Prescott with all there rig! I will make a long story short! No one other than me and Butch and Corky showed up! Internet is closed in GN on holidays and Sundays so we did not get Cristobals message untill I got back today to San Felipe.
All the roads were in excellent shape ,freshly graded and with new pavement in the middle of the gravel section near Tortugas. We waited for someone to show up sunday in GN and then in Vicanizo and made it to east of El Queen late Sunday. Waiting at the end of the road near El Queen Butch, Corky and Butch's son Mike took their 6 passenger buggy to check the rest of the road, at 3 miles they broke a rear wheel bearing and lost all th oil, then a screaming 50 MPH sand storm came in , I had busted the rocker arm on the Tracker so I took Butch back to Vicanizo to pick up his surbaban and trailer for the buggy, 172 miles one way! I only hope they made it back to Prescott ok! They drove about 2000 miles to eat one sloppy joe sandwitch and drive back, if we had more 4wd rigs as was promissed by the people who did not show up we could have waited the storm out and still had a good trip, as it was my TACOMA was the only thing left running.
As far as I can tell this subject on the Nomads forum attracted more views and replies than any thig has for a long time and it was disapointing that with a frezzer full of steak and lobster waiting when the fishermen sobered up and the wind quit that all we had to eat was a sloppy joe sandwich sunday night and then ate sand!
Thanks to Butch anmike and Corky1 for driving nearly 2000 miles foor 1 sanndwitch and no lobster.
As for ,me I made over 1000 miles of offroad and backroad Baja by my self, tore off the Tacoma bumper and hitch 3 times and had a great time with just me and the wife and the coyotes, all my futher trips will be like this.

WOW DUDE !!!

jrbaja - 11-6-2004 at 01:38 PM

That sucks. But, these things happen sometimes. Sorry though for when it does.
Now, about the beach access and treasure hunting. Was there anything good that happened? Did you make it to the beach?
Better luck Amigo.

David K - 11-6-2004 at 02:18 PM

We were looking forward to a Malarrimo report, and you delivered... albeit not quite the report that we expected or would wish upon anyone!

The best advice is to announce a trip and whoever shows up, make it seem that is everyone who you expected to come (even if nobody attends)! Then continue with your planned adventure and have a great time.

Don't give up as when the Nomads can join with you, it is a lot of fun.

Even though a couple people tried to scare the Nomads from joining me, our group trip up to Matomi canyon's oasis was a complete success...

Mcgyver, what a trip. It's too bad about the wind and the food. Sure would like to know if you made it to the beach for some treasure hunting and have a story or two there. Seems like a true Baja adventure though. Thanks for the report. I wish I could have made it.
Bob H
PS: So my lobster is still there?

Photos?

Frigatebird - 11-6-2004 at 08:33 PM

Hope you got some photos before your lens scratched over. Seems like you've paid your dues. Next trip will be a dream. ;D

Sorry to hear things didn't go as planned : (I didn't quite understand what you meant about the fishermen with the lobster?) Even with the problems I wish I could have made that trip.......next time, ...

Just another plain example of you just not gettin' it...doh!

Glad you had a safe and memorable trip with your group at Matomi.

Later Dr.K

Max,

Good try mi amigo! The Malarimmo Beach trip is really not for the less adventureous let alone having a heavy-duty reliable support truck that can handle serious recovery duties of other vehicles.

Heading in from El Queen is a no-brainer but truly the great trip is coming in from the main road through the sandy wash and heading out through El Queen.

The entire off-road trip is a tall-order...for any group. As always it sounded like you had quite an adventure...I saw you heading north on Hwy 1 north of Vizcaino...however, I was driving a Ford F350 towing a race trailer...so you didn't notice me in the Desert Tank...we're coming by next week on our last prerun south to La Paz...before the race. Bringin' presents.....

Good show amigo! Cya next week.

D'Bull......

Debra - 11-6-2004 at 10:34 PM

Can you just leave it alone? We (well some) understand that you just don't like David....so, how about just stop making remarks at Nomads' I don't know that anyone goes to "baja.net" to be rude, yet (not much lately here )..which wasn't the case awhile ago ) it still "pukes" here from "there" .....I also don't want to be rude, but, what is it? Not much conversation on that board to keep an interest? It just seems to me that we should all be adults and leave the bad blood alone. Okay?

Desertbull - 11-7-2004 at 07:48 AM

Thx Whistler...you hit the nail on the head.

Debra...I love you too!:moon:

Got Baja?

Debra

jrbaja - 11-7-2004 at 08:01 AM

:lol::lol: I think DK needs to learn to stand up for himself. Especially with all the whining about others picking on him.

I can be somewhat abrasive at times which causes me to expect to be called on everything I say. He should too!:light:

Besides, the board is basically boring unless somebody starts an argument! Sorry Doug.

TMW - 11-7-2004 at 09:34 AM

Too bad you didn't make it in. My brothers and I when in thru Castro's a couple of years ago. It's a beautiful scene up top before dropping into the canyon wash. Looks almost like the Grand Canyon. We were there in June. Lots of stuff on the beach, mostly trash. No booze. Did find an underwater camera with 1 pix taken. Turned out to be a scuba diver underwater. There was a very large Badger maybe a mile before the ocean. Saw him coming and going. I rode my motorcycle down the beach and ran with a pack of 5 coyotes before they turned up off the beach.

Whistler, DBull, JR.....

Points taken, I really should stay out of this "caca", and I will strive to do better at 'sitting on my hands" I have a big mouth, and it's not always easy to keep it shut. Sorry......

Regarding my reply...

David K - 11-7-2004 at 11:01 AM

It was posted to offer Max (mcgyver) a positive side to his future group trip plans. He ended his post sounding fed up because a bunch didn't show up.

I led a group trip last February, and despite serious threats from 2-3 people (I didn't name, above) that I was leading them into doom and death, we had the best time possible, and didn't interfere with any pre-runners.

For the newer folks: Our trip last Feb. was over President's Day weekend (when we working folks could go) and it was two weeks before an off road race in the area. In order to get into Matomi canyon it required we drive on about 10% of the (future) race route, the same direction the racers used. Since there could be some pre-runners checking the course during the short time we would be on that 10% of the route. A couple people tried to ruin our trip saying I was leading them into a death trap, as the pre-runners would smash into us!

SCORE specifically states that pre-running is not racing, and the dirt roads in Baja are not their property, specially two weeks before an event.

One prerunner easily passed us just before the end of our dirt road trip in wide Arroyo Matomi.

So... don't let a few rotten apples spoil the whole bunch. That weekend: http://vivabaja.com/204
Keep in mind, this sort of caravan tour is done often in Baja by people who charge big bucks. Join me, and it is free. Another really good person who does the same is Neal Johns and his Desert Explorers group.

I am so sorry (not) it bothers a few people that others get to enjoy back country Baja... at less than 100 mile per hour.

bufeo - 11-7-2004 at 12:03 PM

Great report Max, and good to see you and Polly at Telcel, San Felipe, even if it was for only a few minutes. We were (or at least I was) like horses going to the barn by that time. Looking at three more hours to Punta Bufeo, I was hard on the bit.

This thread started while we were on our trip to British Columbia and I missed it completely.

Butch may not remember us 'cause we "blend into the background", but we helped him entertain some Amish guests at Brisemar last year.

Your report brings back great memories of our only trip to Ma. Bch. 1970 went down the coast from Pta Sta Rosalillita. Can't remember how many times we got stuck. Our "Sidewinder" winch played an important role on that particular trip.

We enjoyed a three-day stay on Ma. Bch. Saw a lot of flotsam and jetsam. Worst discovery was what looked like used med supplies thrown overboard. We were hoping for glass floats but settled for cork ones.

See you south.

Desertbull - 11-7-2004 at 06:46 PM

Debra...

A box or two of wine and we'll be like ol' chums again...I still adore you!

surfer jim - 11-7-2004 at 07:21 PM

Sounds like time to start planning another trip ...for the spring time....

Sorry for the disappointments

Hook - 11-8-2004 at 10:08 AM

but I bet you had some quality time even just putting down the roads on "fix-it" missions.

Agree with Surfer JIm that it is time for the Nomad community to start thinking about potential spring trips; one or more for plenty of options.

Hope you aren't too miffed at me, as I ended up cancelling out a good month in advance.

Malarrimo still remains a dream.

elgatoloco - 11-8-2004 at 11:10 AM

We want to get to Malarrimo as well. Tell surfer jim we can all rendevous at La Fonda then head south.:P;)

I can

Frigatebird - 11-8-2004 at 01:24 PM

make a trip to Malarrimo 3/28 to 4/1 or there abouts,...no foolin'.

David K - 11-9-2004 at 12:39 AM

Schedule it during Spring Break/Easter week when my kids' school is out, and I would be able to go. Chris has always wanted to go there... after seeing the photos in Mike McMahan's book! I would like to go in the original way, down the 'Grand Canyon of Baja'... north from San Jose de Castro.

TMW - 11-9-2004 at 08:16 AM

I would be up to a trip during spring break. Maybe get my daughter, son in law and grandkids to go in their F250 diesel super crew 4x4. My wife and I will take the Toyota so we can pull em out.

A definition Spring Break....

Hook - 11-9-2004 at 09:53 AM

...is definitely in order. It changes so much from school district to school district these days.

surfer jim - 11-9-2004 at 01:19 PM

My thoughts exactly....when?....

EASTER WEEK '05

cristobal - 11-9-2004 at 01:56 PM

monday APRIL 4 ........thru ........EASTER sunday APRIL 10.....

:o:bounce::spingrin:;D:rolleyes::wow::P

Bob H - 11-9-2004 at 02:16 PM

Could this be right? My calendar shows Easter Sunday to be March 27th in 2005.
Then, when would Semana Santa take place, the week before?
Bob H:smug:

You see how confusing defining Easter Week

Hook - 11-9-2004 at 02:45 PM

...can be!

Easter Sunday is definitely March 27th, 2005. I would imagine that the week before would continue to be Semana Santa in Mexico. The religious holiday trumps the concept of Spring Break in Mexico.

Many school districts have taken to moving spring break off the traditional Easter Week, as vacation options become more available. My school district employer is observing spring break the week BEFORE the traditional week.Others observe the week after.

Time to start a new thread specifically about spring trip options.
