Wow what a game! Mexico won as expected, and clearly outplayed the US after team USA jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The US team is not a door mat anymore, and the last few years has embarrassed Mexico by beating them. So it was special for "El Tri" ( the Mexican team) to beat the US on their own turf for the Mexican fans. This year Mexico is really really good.

The Mexican fans in the Rose Bowl I think were well behaved although I understand there was a little booing along with blowing of air horns and bouncing of beach balls during the American National anthem. According to some reports 80 percent of the 93,000 fans were partisan fans and most of them were Mexicans and pro Mexico. So really it was like a home game for Mexico, and the USA was like a visitor in their own country!

However, there was some controversy after the game by sore loser goalkeeper Tim Howard of the losing USA team who allowed four unanswered goals by Mexico. Howard instead of being upset over his individual play and the USA's team performance. Instead Howard gets his panties in a bunch over the fact that the CONCACAF officials conducted the title ceremony in Spanish! Oh yeah Tim Howard was livid the post title ceremony was in Spanish in the USA and Howard's own country.

Howard said:

“CONCACAF should be ashamed of itself,” Howard told Yahoo! Sports. “I think it was an [expletive] disgrace that the entire post-match ceremony was held in Spanish. You can bet your [expletive] if we were in Mexico City it wouldn’t all be in English.”

Howard was also seen gesturing angrily while team officials tried to calm him down.

I think Tim Howard is a crybaby, and should be ashamed over his on the field performance instead of going into a rage over post game ceremonies that were conducted in Spanish. So what it the ceremony was conducted in Spanish. The crowd was 80 percent pro-Mexico with most soccer fans being from Mexico, and most of the fans watching on TV watched on Spanish speaking TV.

Taking all this at face value, I'd say the powers that be in all this are doing an extremely poor job of promoting the sport of soccer to Americans. They'd stand a lot to gain if soccer were to become a mainstream, revenue sport in the U.S.

Could give a flying "F" about soccer, baseball, football, and whatever ball comes down the pike. It's silly! Worth nothing in the real scheme of things.

At a taqueria in my neighborhood, a Latino boys soccer team came in, and they all had the Corona beer label on the back of their jerseys. I was floored to see a beer sponsor on ten year old kids. How commercialized is soccer in Mexico anyway? By the way, we don't have cigarette advertisements on TV in the U.S., but to be a real man, you need to smoke Camel non-filters.

I am gratified to have JustJoePocho confirm what I've always said about those who take Armchair Sporting Seriously.

It's great to enjoy watching most of these things in person. It's even (at times) enjoyable to watch "some" of them on TV. I once went to a few SD Sockers games and found them OK. The Indoor game is more enjoyable.

What is truly ODD are those people who actually give some importance to the whole business as if what some paid professionals are doing has some import to their own personal being.

I'm reminded of the Mongoloids I used to see at Football games with the T-shirts "If you ain't a [insert team] fan, you ain't Sh-t".

And, they act as if they actually believe it.

SO, what Earth-Shaking change in affairs is now occasioned by a Mex victory ? Or, would have been with a USA victory ?

Speaking of Oddities and Sports Fans, my personal best memory is from 1992.

Sitting in the second-story open-air Waterfront bar at Arby's in Charlotte Amalie eating a French-Dip and sipping Bushwhackers.

A U.S. Destroyer (or Frigate) was anchored in the Roadstead and Sailors were ferrying ashore for leave. The Bar soon became filled with them gathered around the Big-Screen TV watching the USA Basketball team playing in the Olympics.

Talk about Strangers in Paradise.

Fan IS short for Fanatic.

Of course, our son did say once that He HATED shore-leave in the V.I.s because EVERYTHING was so expensive and the places that "might" not have been were on the Off-Limits list.

One Sportswriter, lamenting the fact that the USA team "STINKS", said that "Soccer will NEVER become a Major influence in the U.S. until they can field a REAL Competitor".

Well, OK. IF you say so. Thank God for that.

Sort of a Chicken and Egg Thing, I guess.

My toughts on the game:

1.-First of all a big thanks to the US team, its great to have such a strong rivalry. Both teams have benefited a lot from such rivalry and have grown to the point that any team from south america or europe, now expect very difficult games when facing any of or two top Concacaf teams. Just 15 years ago we where considered average, now we are considered among only a few new nations that in the next 20 years can win a world cup.

2.-I don't agree with many critics of the US team, i think the US team is very good, but for the first time, they played against a young Mexican team that is simply and perhaps, the best team that Concacaf as ever produced. The kids are good, scary good, and any team in the world, could have lost to Mexico in the same circumstances.

3.-Mexico needs to perfect this awesome team to see just how far it can go. It may not win the world cup, but we can genuinely expect this bunch to be in the top 4 of the world. The US needs to start creating a young new team, the current players are getting old and the fundations for the future need to be created now. These new kids will definately take advantage of playing and competing against their Mexico rivals, and that will benefit both. There is a bright future for US soccer, but its going to take years of hard work to get there, just like it took many years for this young Mexican team to produce results.

We thought it was a really good game and really did not care much who won---either team was OK with us.

It really was all about sharing the game with good friends whose children painted their faces with red, white and green, waved Mexican flags, and all of us having a great time with cheering and booing. I think we were happier that Mexico won because the children enjoyed the win so much and gave us such a bad time. :-)

Mexico just seemed to wear down the US team---they just kept going.

We have a 2006 Opolo Mountain Zin and a 2005 Opolo Reserve Zin in our 'cellar'. Opolo Zinz are great value IMHO. We also have some Bella 2005 Big River Ranch that I know you will like. jesse-- the Kosta Browne was rated in the top 100 of the best wines by Wine Spectator out of about 14,000. It's Pretty much unavailable to those not on the mailing list. Mexico has won the record for medals won in panamerican games, and i soccer its Mexico-Argentina in the final.
