High winds in La Paz, gusts maybe to 40-- some fool is putting out of the marina la Paz heading out to the SOC- the port is closed, insane

vandenberg - 10-16-2012 at 01:06 PM

from the Baja Insider:

Russ - 10-16-2012 at 01:19 PM

Hard Rain now 2:15. curious that the surface wind is still out of the NNE. I have my East facing windows wide open still.
It appears the mountains are holding it on the Pacific side for now as it appears the center has flattened out some.

From Jeff Masters Wunder Blog:
Hurricane Paul put on an impressive burst of rapid intensification on Monday, topping out as a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds at 2 pm PDT on Monday. Paul has weakened some this morning, due to high wind shear of 30 knots, but remains a potent Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds as it heads towards landfall this afternoon on the Baja Mexico coast. The 3006-passenger cruise ship Carnival Splendor made a daring run southeastwards along the Baja coast in front of Hurricane Paul, and encountered some very heavy weather this morning. At 2 am PDT, the vessel reported sustained winds of 54 mph and hail in a heavy squall located about 160 miles northeast of Paul's eye. Four hours later, at 6 am PDT, the ship was still measuring 54 mph winds, at point about 140 miles east of the eye and 40 miles northwest of the Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. The winds were measured on top of the ship, at an altitude more than 100 feet above the standard 10 meter (32.8') altitude used to report winds. If you know of a passenger who was on the ship, tell them to upload a wunderphoto and a report of what is was like! The view from the deck webcam shows that not too many passengers were out taking wunderphotos this morning, though.

Since the region of coast where Paul will hit is very sparsely populated, heavy rains will be the main threat from the storm. Cabo San Lucas has picked up 2.23" of rain from Paul as of 7 am PDT this morning, and San Jose Del Cabo picked up 2.00". Neither city is expected to get tropical storm-force winds from Paul, according to the latest wind probability forecast from NHC. Paul's formation brings this year's tally in the Eastern Pacific to 16 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes. An average Eastern Pacific season has 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

Sweetwater - 10-16-2012 at 01:30 PM

Hola to all......hunker down and stay dry....'canes are not your friend.

Looking forward to another trip to La Paz for Carnival in 2013, forward any info you run across, hoping to have a slower group with less "agenda".....

Hook - 10-16-2012 at 01:32 PM

Paul has the earmarks of dispensing lots of moisture in the mountains directly west of the Mulege area.

If I was along that Rio, I would have evacuated by now; lock, stock and barrel.

Bob and Susan - 10-16-2012 at 02:00 PM

its right over us now...lots of water
buckets

the river people in mulege are getting lots of water

its moving east FAST

if it continues it'll be gone by 8pm tonite

paul1.jpg - 34kB

Bob and Susan - 10-16-2012 at 02:34 PM

holy sh*t its raining here on the bay

i wonder how the town and river are doing
no posts from the river people

BajaBruno - 10-16-2012 at 02:34 PM

The latest NWS discussion reports that Paul has slowed "significantly" and will continue to slow further.

It does seem hard to fathom that Paul will make the predicted hard left to the west, but either way NWS says it will be on the peninsula for at least 24 to 36 hours and that doesn't bode well for Mulege or other vulnerable locations.

Russ - 10-16-2012 at 02:39 PM

3:30
Wind and rain have diminished. Our surface wind moved almost due North now. Here a guy that stuck it out during the worst of it.... so far.

Bob and Susan - 10-16-2012 at 02:50 PM

russ its POUNDING us here on the bay...not too much wind but some

maybe you're in the "eye"

Bob and Susan - 10-16-2012 at 03:08 PM

ok now the wind is BLOWING...geezzz

water and wind...HURRICANE!!!

Pescador - 10-16-2012 at 03:16 PM

I did not think we had much wind as we were sitting on the front porch and enjoying a c-cktail while watching the waves hit the beach at Chivato. I think I did not realize how much the wind was blowing until I went off of the porch where the Hurricane Cloth is . I was afraid that since we mounted this stuff, that we might never get to try it out but I now know that it works very, very well.

MulegeAL - 10-16-2012 at 03:19 PM

From the NOAA Goes satellite at 3PM, PDT: this storm did not turn, sorta like a couple other storms prior that didn't get the message either.

Looks like remmanent center goes over Bahia Conception. Hope it keeps moving fast for all concerned. Very concerned for flash flooding along the river now.

I talked with contractor Alfredo in Mulege at 1PM, PDT. He was not too concerned at the time. Will try to reach him later.

Bob and Susan - 10-16-2012 at 03:25 PM

right now gusts to 40mph and lots of rain

water all around...thank god we "built up"

i think it'll be over by 9pm...the "hot air" from the debates should clear it out:lol:

no messages from town...must be baaaddd

Bob and Susan - 10-16-2012 at 03:47 PM

my prediction...in 2 hours its over...

the north gets a pass...this time

still lots of water and rain at 4:40pm

paul2.jpg - 23kB

rts551 - 10-16-2012 at 03:56 PM

we will see. power is apparently out on the coast between Abreojos and Asuncion but an hour or so ago it was pouring in Abreojos. Minor flooding Locals felt there was no doubt that the road would wash out if it continued.

bajadogs - 10-16-2012 at 04:11 PM

Thanks for all the reports! Hoping to hear from anyone downtown Mulege. I just hope Paul is as not as bad as John.

Estrella - 10-16-2012 at 04:29 PM

Well, once again I am asking for information about Mulege. I cannot believe another hurricane just went right over. Is Mulege Mike still online?

Paul is worse. John, at least, was an apostle.

you should hear the wind and rain here on the bay in mulege...WOW!!!

the town MUST be getting hit HARD!!!

It looks as though he was a self proclaimed apostle who was accepted as such by Christendom but not by the Jews themselves.

"Jesus chose only twelve apostles and named them. Paul was not among them. Then he promised them that they should sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Their number therefore corresponds to the number of the tribes of Israel, and we have no indication that Jesus intended to add others."

Don't want to hijack this important thread. Will say no more. Was intended as humor anyway.

Planning a trip south (Abreojos) in the next few days and need to know what the road conditions are like and how things look in town. Can anyone let me know? Hopefully the house held up to this storm.

Also hoping to get any news about conditions in Chivato and whether the storm left any damage. Russ any news on the house? Thanks for any information you can share & see you soon.

Beachgirl - 10-16-2012 at 05:44 PM

Last heard via Skype from Mulegemichael many hours ago. He and many of our neighbors are holed up at the Hotel Mulege, obviously now no electricity, and who knows when it will be up. Or the roads. Or the bridges. Mike said at that time he had never in his life seen it rain harder. Glad this monster has been downgraded, but all that water swirling over the mountains pretty much means one helluva mess. Again. Can only hope everyone is safe.

Bob and Susan - 10-16-2012 at 05:47 PM

lots of WIND and water still...almost over : )

I would wait until the power is back on. Last I heard from Abreojos, it was raining, hard. They were speculating about the road being washed out between there and Campo Fisher (that happened last tropical storm when the water sheets across the desert on its way down to the Laguna). then the power went out. I would also wait until I knew that fuel was available.

Marinero - 10-16-2012 at 06:22 PM

Sorry for last two post. System is acting up.

Russ - 10-16-2012 at 06:24 PM

7pm
Strong wind and a little sideways rain. I'm guessing gust to 50mph. I haven't heard of any damage anywhere in Chivato but it is still early and not everyone has a radio.

It appears that Paul dynamited when it went over the mountain. What I'm seeing now could be the real storm coming over the mountains. The trailing white image.
I sure hope I'm wrong but the wind here is really gusting stronger than ever.
Later

What I meant to say is that statement is not necessarily crap, but might be in the wrong thread. Theology in the midst of a hurricane can be a slippery slope.

I guess the question might be: "What would Jesus do?"

You know....Jesus Ramirez.....the guy living west of Mulege on the flood plain.... :saint:

"Slipper" It's just plain bad manners to hijack this thread during a crisis. I had several e-mails for up dates because friends couldn't handle a Theology hijack. Sorry to respond to this but I'm pi$$ed!

Yes, we hope for some good news from the Pacific side once the electricity is back on. Lots of rain will make a mess out of all those roads for a while. Hope you can make your trip and sure wish we were there now. It is difficult to be so far away. And most of all, we hope everyone is safe.

usually does not take too long to get the roads open.. couple of days...but if the fuel loads from Santa Rosalia are disrupted gas could be a problem. If I don't here otherwise in a week or so, my plan is to buy extra fuel in El Rosario.

Its still moving up the west coast although weakened to tropical storm strength. Hope all is well Punta ABreojos to Bahia Tortugas.

BajaBruno - 10-16-2012 at 08:36 PM

This is purely for technical interest, but interestingly the latest NWS bulletin has Paul completely disassociated from the convection that has hit the east coast of Baja and sitting in Mag Bay with a guess of 50 knot wind speed. It is expected to travel north along the west coast, dissipating fairly rapidly.

All th best to you affected by this storm.

NOAA shows the hurricane passing to the west of Mulege; maybe they have been spared a direct hit?

Emergency: No Hotdog sales allowed in the streets of La Paz

In response to the storm Paul the Mayor of La Paz has announced that selling Hot Dogs in the streets is illegal to reduce traffic during the storm?!@#

http://colectivopericu.wordpress.com/2012/10/16/cancelan-ven...

Cancelan venta de Hot Dogs en La Paz

La Paz, BCS-The Municipal Council meeting on civil protection Tuesday morning, October 16 due to Hurricane Warning "Paul", the municipal government reiterated the call for citizens to not passing in the streets unless it is strictly necessary, the Mayor of the city, Ponce instructed Esthela areas of public safety, public services, public works, urban development that signaled the most critical roadways to warn motorists and pedestrians, as they are not permit release of any business activity in waterways as fords and in coordination with the Ministry of Health, in the case of food stalls.

Although the effects of the hurricane forecast rains are not only in the municipality of La Paz, the capital of the state, the main damage is on rural roads and, according to report public and public safety services since Monday night, have monitoring trips made.

The DIF and other areas in coordination with the State Government now has more than a dozen shelters, brigades, support food and mattresses.

The mayor reiterated her call, Esthela Ponce, as voiced in the State Civil Protection Council, that in these times people shelter in their homes, for the lowest number of passing vehicles to avoid delays for motorists, calling that adopted Governor Marcos Covarrubias for a safer population.

The mayor gave precise instruction to different fields coordinated by the General Secretariat and the direction of urban development to not allow any activity in washes, and vehicle sales, or food because despite the controversy with other levels of government and the illegality of such merchants, pose a risk to people in public health and safety, "there are already detecting several health circumstances that we can not explain, we have a health crisis, and intestinal diseases have broken out and we want to ask all the support people, "he said.

DIF La Paz reported having ready shelters throughout the municipality and transfer staff to cater to shelters if needed.

Afternoon tours are conducted in rural communities in Pocitas, Puerto Chale, Santa Rita, Todos Santos, El Pescadero and others.

The session totaled SAGARPA, the pentathlon militarized vehicles and items offered for transportation to shelters.

The mayor, convened meeting on Wednesday at 9:00 in the morning and reiterated that once past the rains will feed back the clean, urban image, patching and reencarpetado.

I don't ever remember seeing a hurricane split into 2 cells like Paul did. The rain which preceded the hurricane seems to have moved across and the Hurricane/TS is still chugging up the west coast. Prayers to all those affected I know the Nomad community will help in any way we can.

Bob and jane - 10-17-2012 at 06:37 AM

My internet is working again this morning in Loreto. The rain stopped about 5 p.m. yesterday. At 6 we took a drive. Of the 4 or 5 boats left in the darcena, one had sunk, just the bow showing. Very angry, muddy waves crashing up over the breakwater. Families out taking photos. The new shade sail on the malecon was torn and flapping in the strong winds. Crowds were gathered at the river, too, watching the muddy torrent sweeping to the sea. We thought it was very impressive until the woman next to me showed me the photos she had taken an hour earlier. The river had actually come over the banks on the north side and deposited debris clear into the area where the tianguis (Sunday market) is held. Her pictures were incredible. I hope all the rancheros upriver are okay. The canyons will all be scrubbed clean when we go exporing this winter. We didn't see very many tree limbs or palm fronds in the roads. Quite a few downed wires near the river. That was scary. I've heard no news of casualties. The power is on, the internet works. We have no city water right now. I wasn't planning on watering anyway.......
Hope the worse anyone has to deal with is mud and potholes.

Beachgirl - 10-17-2012 at 06:50 AM

Bob and Jane - Thank you thank you for the update. Glad to hear you have internet. Any news at all re Mulege? Anything?

bajajudy - 10-17-2012 at 06:55 AM

POOF
We lost internet and cell phone service yesterday afternoon. Also no long distance calls.
I wake up this morning to bye bye Paul.
We had more rain than we have had since they built the bridge. Water from bank to bank in the San Jose arroyo.
Hope everyone is ok!

8.00 a.m. electric and internet back on line...winds 25 mph from the south, light rain, the storm is located 20 miles due south from town (according to my vecino, jose) going to have a look around town.....highest wind speed last night 40 to 50 mph.................... steve

Eli - 10-17-2012 at 07:10 AM

I also lost Internet up here in Los Barriles, but I did have T.V. satellite service.
A friend who was suppose to come home yesterday didn't has she couldn't get out of La Ribera.
School was cancelled yesterday, but I just heard one of the grand-kids leave just now, so it must be on today.
Light breeze, blue skies, puffy white clouds out my window.
The road down the hill from our place is a little washed out, bet a car can make it down without to much problem, bet I walk my bike down it for a while.
I figure it was a small price to pay for one more investment in green for Baja after so many years of no rain.

shari - 10-17-2012 at 07:15 AM

Wooo Hooo....the internet is back on and everyone still has a roof!...we lost internet about 3 yesterday and cell phone service but the electricity has stayed on which was nice for mopping up water and telephone are still working fine.

Here in Asuncion, we had winds of about 30 knots..maybe some higher gusts and very hard rain for many hours last night. The sky is still very dark but it isnt raining and the wind is about 18 knots looks like from the southeast.

It could be the worst is over now which would be nice. I wonder how Mula is doing this morning? Listening to the radio, things werent as bad as expected but you can bet on many roads being washed out for a couple days.

It was interesting realizing how much we depended on internet images of the storm to calm our nerves...with no satellite images and nomad reports, we were alot more worried about the unknown trajectory of Paul...so we did some more prep for serious wind and rain....nice it's back on now and still have power.

I hope everyone is fine with minimal damage especially our amigos in Mulege.

BajaBlanca - 10-17-2012 at 07:21 AM

our reort here for la bocana is exactly the same as shari's in asuncion

never lost power which is a righr miracle.
never lost phone.
lost internet in the PM and it never came back.

the winds howled all night long but the rain was ever slight but nonstop.

mega black clouds over the ocean now but I actually see a patch of blue sky in the midst of the blackness !

redmesa - 10-17-2012 at 07:36 AM

How is the town of Bahia Asuncion? Are there new arroyos and is the town full of sand run off? I would really like to see some pictures if you get out and about today. Hope the destruction is minimal.

shari - 10-17-2012 at 07:45 AM

I havent been to town yet but will do so after breakfast...the night was long and we didnt get much sleep. Yesterday the bulldozer cleared a bigger opening for the arroyo by your place which is good...too bad all the rain fell at night so we didnt cruise around except to put buckets under drips.

It was funny because people were scrambling to find their old AM radios to hear storm updates. We are still listening here this morning and I just heard the bridge at Km 81 is down so no one seems to know about the Ligui bridge cause they cant get to it.

shari - 10-17-2012 at 08:18 AM

I just talked to Rick Barber in Mulege via cell phone who lives up by Saul's store and he has half a meter of water in his place and said that the water level was 5' less than Hurricane Jimena so the river area is most likely flooded...sorry for the bad news amigos.

San Ignacio river is running and so the road is cut off from the village.
The highway by Palo Verde near Sta.Rosalia is closed...arroyo running still.

It is raining again here and more wind now.

the radio is asking for help with drinking water, food, mosquito repellent for the villages.

Beachgirl - 10-17-2012 at 08:26 AM

Facebook from Marv and Cathy Perrigo (now in San Carlos). She said house M-3 in Oasis 4 feet of water. House 56 in Oasis 8. All safe. Lots of mud. She said Orchard would have been maybe 10-12 feet of water. Hang in there Mulege Shari, thank you so much for contacting Rick Barber, our weather guru.

EngineerMike - 10-17-2012 at 08:28 AM

Just heard from Mulege very briefly by cell phone; only got two data points due to brevity of call, both in Oasis Park (next development downstream from big highway bridge after the Orchard). These numbers are preliminary in my book due to hasty initial assessment-
House M-3 in Oasis Park got 4 feet of water,
House 56 in Oasis (mine) got ~8feet.

So far as known at this point, everybody there is safe but wet & muddy for those down by the river. Not sure how this translates to downtown, but hard for those numbers not to have put good flow of water thru town.
Orchard would have been 2-4 feet higher than my house, maybe 10-12 feet.
Pretty close to Hurricane John numbers.
Purely my guess but would probably be less mud than John, given John & recent floods in the Mulege estuary.

I'm going to guess there will be multiple road washouts up & down the peninsula so access will take a day or so to restore. Generally the government has that in hand pretty quick these days since getting caught flat footed after H.John. Electric where knocked out will likewise take a few days.

Abreojos wind report via vhf radio is 50 knots...getting nasty here now...sideways rain and more wind

bryanmckenzie - 10-17-2012 at 08:52 AM

I've been following from afar. Sounds like everyone is getting a bit, some more than others. Great reports everyone.

But no pictures to share? During storm or afterwards? Blanca or Shari, I bet others besides me would love to see some pacific cloud & wave pictures. Or video clips.

It sounds like everyone fared well, except perhaps Mulege.

Okay, mulegemichael just borrowed a cell phone and made a one minute call to me. We are at #54 in the Oasis. River road it out, all roads north and south not passable at this time. All our windows blew out, both property line walls down, palapa, of course...gone. No bueno, but seems as far as he knows, people are safe, obviously our main concern.

South to Loreto

Sounds like its OK in Loreto!! We were headed down today but decided to hold off until Friday, SD to GN then next day on to Loreto. Its hard to just sit here looking at the Evil Ess You Vee all loaded up with kayaks, fishing rods, etc and not be going.

Has anyone heard anything about the other side of ther river...Huerta Don Chano?

Wishing everyone well! Hoping our roof stays on!
All my Baja friends please stay safe.

This eastern Pacific satellite image showing water vapor and jet stream perhaps explain why Paul split into two pieces, one rain and one wind. If you think about the two trajectories, it looks like an automobile T-bone accident about to happen.

"Hurricane Paul, still with a distinct eye, is visible just off the tip of the Baja Peninsula in this NOAA satellite image from Monday afternoon." ... from this website.

I just spoke to Mulegena and their new house if fine and dandy and workers are already beginning to muck out the river houses that got a few meters of water...around 10' or so. Her old house had the window smashed out and wall was down as are other walls and house windows down there...sorry amigos.

MulegeAL - 10-17-2012 at 09:34 AM

From telecon with Saul at his store/mercado:

The lower part of his store where the liquor/wine is shelved got wet, that's about 3 feet above the roadbed in front of the store. :(

shari - 10-17-2012 at 09:36 AM

ruh roh....things are getting bad here now...wind just picked up to like 40 knots, rain and we will most likely lose internet now...so........have a good day everyone if I lose ya

EngineerMike - 10-17-2012 at 09:39 AM

Re: Mulege- Just talked to Saul Davis & Raphael Cuesta, separate calls.
Everybody is OK so far as both know, all safe in town by current reports.

Saul's store did not get wet (but close) except for the liquor dept which is low & cleanable. All family OK, they are cleaning up & getting ready for business. He has a generator to keep the frozen & cold stuff OK.
La Fortuna got wet, part of new Malecon road to Loma Azul came apart & all new light poles are down. Road to Lighthouse is out.
Water in town is out, ditto power but power co. working on restoring power. I'm guessing water to Loma Azul is out by washout of line when water pressure gets restored (my guess), and no doubt water to south side of river will require rebuild of water line at river crossing under bridge & maybe some washouts.
Saul has a "hurricane" phone that is working, doesn't need electricity as long as phone service is up which it is. For some reason dialing out on cell phones is dodgy; dialing in works fine.

Raphael who is in the Oasis mobilizing clean up says my house, #56 got 10" shy of ceiling, call it 7ft. Landgraf say 6.5 ft. Bill & Judy Havig at end of Oasis easterly & southerly- not sure of depth but over the counter tops at least; they were getting the kitchen cleaned out when I spoke to them yesterday a.m. & storing all above flood line so not the end of the earth for them. Gene Lee will have gotten hammered.
No specific word on Jimmie & Annie Christopher, but I'm sure they are safe & Quito Rosas helped them mobilize.

Orchard will have gotten hammered, tho no specific word on depths & lot#'s. Maribel's will be ~1ft less depth than H.John from 2006.

Punta Pequeña, BCS Wed 10/17 10:50 AM

Current conditions: Wind South (120-180°). Average 18mph Gusts 30mph. Misty rain and ocean spray. Visibility varies 1/2 mile to 10 miles as squalls continue to pass through. Whitecaps, but not severe popcorn seas and not "whiteout" sea surface conditions. No storm swell or lines of waves or giant waves breaking out at sea like you see sometimes. Some wind chop waves breaking close to shore.

Wind - Max winds were East, 10pm to 12AM ish last night. Sustained in the 30's with gusts 58mph. Direction switched to South in the middle of the night and blew 20-30mph.

Rainfall- 1"

Overall no "extreme" conditions here on the spot where we're often in a weather shadow, but the weather they usually get in areas all around us pretty much guarantees the roads in/out of here won't be passable for a while.

There is an extreme high tide right now 7.1ft. There's usually 15 ft of beach between the bluff and the water on an average high tide. Here's a pic from 30 min ago during a clearing. Another squall is passing through right now.

Just checked the river again here in Loreto. Part of the road is missing but cars and trucks are getting from one side to the other. Ingenuity. Talked to Luis from the phone company. There are currently no services in Zaragoza, Juncalito or Escondido. The phone company is waiting for bulldozers to clear the road of debris near Notri where the road was flooded. We hear that part of the new bridge by Ligui has collapsed. Business as usual here in Loreto Centro. I saw a small plane land so the airport is open. And the bridge over the river in Loreto held.
My thoughts go out to everyone in Mulege. They have suffered so much.

shari - 10-17-2012 at 10:22 AM

I cant believe we still have internet...it's blowing 50 mph easy and our roof is lifting off so Juan is tying it down from the inside...windows look like they may very well blow in so we have taken refuge in the new Dolphin Room with a cement roof and internet and a front row view of the raging sea. Wave are smashing over the road along the bluff here...

Gypsies still have a roof, our big radio antenna fell down and missed StandingWave's camper by inches....whew. This is the biggest wind I have experienced here....I figure we are in the worst of it now...hope it passes quickly

Bajagypsy - 10-17-2012 at 10:28 AM

OMG girl please take care.
I'm going to give Roberto a big smooch, if our roof lasts!

Paul pulls its punch before hitting Baja; Rafael brushes Bermuda By Dr. Jeff Masters Published: 12:31 PM GMT on October 17, 2012 Hurricane Paul weakened rapidly just before landfall on Mexico's Baja coast on Tuesday evening, as wind shear of 30 - 40 knots tore into the storm. Paul peaked as a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds at 2 pm PDT on Monday, but was just a tropical storm with 60 mph winds Tuesday evening when the center finally reached the coast of Baja. Paul hit a region of coast that is very sparsely populated, and I expect damage from the weakening storm was relatively light. Rainfall amounts of 2 - 3" were common over Baja from Paul, but there have been no reports of damaging flooding thus far. Paul has weakened to a tropical storm with 40 mph winds this morning, and will likely be declared dead later today or on Thursday. Significant moisture from Paul is not expected to reach the U.S.

Good luck to all and safe keeping....

shari - 10-17-2012 at 10:41 AM

I heard the rain report on the radio...Todos Santos got the most reported at 8.5" and Comondu area, Lopez Mateos an inch or two less.

so far our roof is holding as are the windows...I hope this is all Paul's got for us.

rhintransit - 10-17-2012 at 10:50 AM

per morning VHF report from Pto Escondido...Hwy 1 at Mirador blocked by boulders but bulldozers have been at it, should be cleared soon. Hwy 1 south of the Clam Shack (on the flat before the Mirador) has a section of the roadway lifted out and turned sideways, impassable at that time.
we all know the speed and cleverness of the road repair crews so this could even be old news by now.

How did Punta Chivato hold up?

Russ - 10-17-2012 at 11:27 AM

I think Pt. Chivato had less rain than anywhere in this area.
The road is closed at least at the estuary.

tiotomasbcs - 10-17-2012 at 11:37 AM

I would have guessed we had about 10 inches but that sounded like too much. 8.5 inches is bastante lluvia but like I said, it poured for 2 days! Where's Woodrow? I'm going out in my Tacoma to reconoiter and buy beer just for the fun of it. Tio

Beachgirl - 10-17-2012 at 11:37 AM

Anyone with a cell and a car plug could obviously recharge that way. Walls and windows can be replaced. This is terrible, but apparently no loss of life. Have to be grateful for that, at least. Just have to wait for recovery of services/roads. Hope this is the end of this bloody storm. Shari, you are still getting hammered? Hang onto your hat...I mean your roof.

Best spot for info

tortuga - 10-17-2012 at 12:14 PM

Well once again Baja Nomad is the best place for info about the peninsula. Thanks you guys for your info and eyewitness reports. Great video from Constitucion. We passed through there in Oct 2006 and it looked just like that. Sorry to those folks that had damage to there stuff glad no loss of life reported. Fair well all !
Saludos, Tortuga, Si Se Puede !

Mula - 10-17-2012 at 12:16 PM

Well, I think San Carlos got the worse of it from this end.
Our wind thingy was the first thing to go when the storm hit about 2p.m. yesterday - so I have no idea about the wind.

All night Monday night/Tuesday morning we had incredible rain - steady all night.

Then the torrential downfall Tuesday and about 6p.m. the rain quit and wind. . . noisy, howling, dry wind - all night Tuesday night/Wednesday morning - til after 6 this morning. It was amazing. The you could almost see the water in the puddles, the panga evaporating into the wind. Took the mules beberio down a full inch(from overflowing) - it is normally kept 3" from the rim.

Then calm with very grey skies. About 11 - poof.. . . . the sun came out, the power back on. It had gone off the first big blow Tuesday about 2 or so in the afternoon.

We lost some roof tiles on a new construction, and that is about it. Mainly we are just so very very waterlogged. and are so happy to have fixed the leaking roof after the first rains in August - instead of waiting until next year before the rains. My husband is a procrastinator of the worst kind!!!! Only 1 leak this time - in his room!!!!

Now, are just wondering how the tree farm and the house in San Nicolas between Loreto and Mulege on the Sea of Cortez faired?????
For sure the road in got worse - than it was 1 week ago when we were there for 5 days. Will go back next week!

capt. mike - 10-17-2012 at 12:21 PM

wow - can't believe this again, and Mulege takes another huge hit on the rio.

Flying Sams had to cancel this weekend's clinic at Lopez mateo as runway is not useable.

Serenidad obviously out too.
18 Baja bush pilots at a fly in at Loreto when it got hit. reports to follow.

Heather - 10-17-2012 at 12:29 PM

Any news on Cabo San Lucas area?
My step-son, girlfriend, and their new baby have been staying in our camper and am wondering how it held up. Hopefully they went to the in-laws!

LaRibereña - 10-17-2012 at 12:53 PM

Any word on San Ignacio?

shari - 10-17-2012 at 01:23 PM

I have heard that the river is running and the road into the village is flooded.

It is still raining lightly but thank goodness the wind has decreased...whew!

the Paul party is underway now in the Dolphin Room...ceviche anyone?

Bajagypsy - 10-17-2012 at 01:25 PM

So glad you are safe!
How is Casa Gypsy, does she still have a roof?

On-the-ground photos
