Just so, David, you don't forget your own statement. " I found out manufacturers can buy favorite treatment " so like accusing someone of fraud to me. and CR would not take this as spreading cheer.

Jeeeezo-----I will never understand these personal insults--------this is the crap that drove me away from the NOMADS board several months ago----------it never stops, and few (if any) ever learn that it leads nowhere except to injure or kill participation in learning about Baja, and each other (something that we all are supposed to love) ?!?!?!?!?!?.

MMc - 12-8-2014 at 11:04 PM

All of this goes both ways. Some of us get tired of it. For those of you I pi$$ off, I am sorry.

Me thinks you are upset that CR no longer recommends the Toyota Tacoma , and CR wrote a review of the Tacoma that painted your fav truck in bad light -- so you find some ridiculous post on a toyota fan boy website and latch onto it as truth...

Sorry some of you don't get my humor. If you can't laugh then why bother getting on line? Do some of you like to be mean?

Goat, I don't read CR anymore, I didn't know they said something bad about Tacomas. Thank you for verifying they are a flawed publication! See, I knew years ago they weren't objective any longer.

While no truck is 100% perfect, the shear number of Tacomas on the road today compared to all other brands testifies that Toyota is doing something right!

Tioloco - 12-9-2014 at 08:48 PM

DK-
Check out what has been the best selling vehicle in the U.S. For the last 32 plus years....... (Not a Tacoma)......
:)

David K - 12-10-2014 at 08:34 AM

Best Selling VEHICLE? Of course not... that's just silly!

If you are in Southern California, it would be hard to argue the Tacoma isn't the best selling small (or mid-sized) TRUCK around here (or maybe the rest of the country?).

You will see maybe 8 Tacomas for every one Ranger, Frontier, or other small truck on the road.

chuckie - 12-10-2014 at 08:39 AM

WOW!

silly boy. why does the f150 outsell the Tacoma by a huge amount every year?

David K - 12-10-2014 at 09:56 AM

F150 is NOT a small or mid size truck... the Ranger is (or was, since Ford could not compete with Tacoma and quit making them)... silly boy.

rts551 - 12-10-2014 at 10:30 AM

Still outsells Tacoma 5-1... gotta be a reason. maybe god is promoting Ford?

chuckie - 12-10-2014 at 10:35 AM

I am amazed and awed that DK, just driving down the street, can scan every truck, do the math and come up with an 8-1 ratio...That's powerful....

Seems this is hard for you, so I will give it one more try: The TUNDRA (second generation) is a full size truck... that would compare to the F-150. The Tacoma is a mid size or small truck... not everyone wants that size. Apples and Oranges when you are in different categories trying to compare.

rts551 - 12-10-2014 at 11:18 AM

The tundra is an even worse seller. Here let give it a try for you.

more room, more power, more options, about the same gas mileage (unless you get the new ecoboost, then better), more utility, etc

If you like a small cramped truck, and some do, the Tacoma is great.

chuckie - 12-10-2014 at 12:09 PM

I had to go downtown to the grocery store a bit ago. I thought I would do an survey of my own, using DK's scientific methodology. I traversed our 6 block main street and the grocery store parking lot and saw not ONE Toyota Tacoma. Most of the trucks were full size trucks which I was able to determine thanks to DK's repeated tutelage that they can be recognized because they are bigger than smaller trucks. There were three Amish buggies in the parking area. From this data I determined that at least in Custer County Colorado, there were NO Toyota Tacoma's sold and that the Amish buggy was the favored mid size HDUV. (horse drawn utility vehicle). I talked to Mr. Yoder, the elder, he said he knew of no plans to increase buggy production.....

David K - 12-10-2014 at 04:32 PM

What's the problem here... reading 101, I said here in Southern California, and not full size trucks.

I also took mental notes when I went out today on a drive to Encinitas and back (about 30 miles round trip)...

I saw 6 Tacomas, 4 Rangers, 1 Dakota, 1 S-10 (Chevy). That was just while driving and didn't write any of this down, so not scientific and I didn't count my truck. Ford quit the small truck market and I know two people who owned 4WD Rangers and neither were great trucks.

If you don't think the Tacoma is popular, or you don't see any, that doesn't change the facts.

My goal is that EVERYONE have a great Baja experience, and offering up my discoveries on what works in Baja is part of that. There are so many Tacoma driving Nomads compared to Rangers, Dakotas, S-10s, and Frontiers, that the case is closed in this court of public opinion... unless you have some strong evidence any of what I said is wrong.

rts551 - 12-10-2014 at 04:49 PM

David Toyotas are fine...but in the big scheme of things, at least right now, they are not the most popular truck. People are buying full size trucks...They get more for their money.

Continuing to narrow your scope is kinda like saying a stripper and hooker is the best woman around.... there are more in this world than small trucks.

Strippers and Hookers have their place, maybe not the best woman to scramble up some eggs but they definitely serve a noble purpose.:lol:

you did not provide any evidence that what you said is right. the case may be closed in your mind, but i think the plaintiff has appealed the decision to a higher court.

i think you should post a poll so nomads can tally what vehicles they drive, and post their opinions of toyota tacomas.

We could have a whole thread on the merits of strippers and hookers. Probably some expertise here somewhere.

chuckie - 12-10-2014 at 06:10 PM

Our resident expert might be the Buddha, from a spiritual outlook, of course...DK's logic is flawed....When I go out looking for Tacomas, and don't see any, well...they are there....I musta just missed em....When he goes out, he see's nothing but....Like I have said before, this whole discussion is so subjective, it's ludicrous.....

David K - 12-10-2014 at 06:21 PM

It is so funny, I can't help but feel sad... I guess this is just a game you got me hooked into, since you ignore the facts or statements I have made: No big trucks included in what I was talking about, not in all states just around here in SoCal, nothing wrong with others!

The Baja plant makes Tacomas, that's all and that's the thread subject.

Ahhh now your sad...it will be better tomorrow. as usual .no facts David. Just statements.

Tioloco - 12-10-2014 at 07:31 PM

Maybe the "SoCal" is to blame..... Rarely is there anything reasonable coming from "that" place!

TMW - 12-10-2014 at 09:24 PM

I see Tacomas and Tundras all the time when out and about. I have a Tacoma and I have a GMC. I like them both for different reasons. I prefer the Tacoma for hard core Off-Roading. There are places I'll go with it I won't go in my GMC, mostly due to it's size.

In case you haven't noticed Tio most thinks that start in CA end up being accepted and implemented across the USA, good and bad.

The Tacoma is a military hero.

From Wikipedia:

American Special Forces Use:

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom, multiple Toyota Tacomas have been observed in use by special forces units of the U.S. Army. Typically, they have been Double Cab models, with SR5 and TRD packages.

Despite the fact that the Hilux, from which the Tacoma is descended, is extremely common in the Middle East, the special forces found it to be easier to purchase Tacomas from American dealerships, modify them appropriately, and ship them to their areas. The gasoline engine used is significantly quieter than the diesel engines used in the HMMWV and some Hilux models. These were modified by eliminating the factory radio, along with almost all exterior lights and door buzzers. The front headlights have been modified to work in IR, in order to work with night vision. The engines are unmodified, but the vehicles have been fitted with brush guards, Warn winches, and a rollbar with a machine gun mount.[23]

David K - 12-11-2014 at 07:53 AM

Cool report Tom, I would like to see that model... any photos online?

Splitting hairs? Have no dog in this fight

Full disclosure. When I am in Baja I always try and have a friend with a Toyota (some of the nicest folks you will ever meet drive them) along to tow me when I get stuck in my 1999 F-250 7.3 L 4x extended cab 8' bed with a 4 wheel pop up camper and 315k miles rig. That way I can keep tire pressure up and not have to hassle with that whole 'let the air out - put the air back in' rigamarow. Leaves more time for cold beers (anything but rotgut Pacifico preferred) and tequila! :saint:
Its all good as long as its all Baja! :dudette:

DOD always goes low bid, just needs to be adequate and low cost..
DOD buying toyotas seems to violate the buy-american requirements that govt is bound to, eh?
Wouldn't using Ford f-150s be more patriotric?

chippy - 12-11-2014 at 05:14 PM

I think not getting your burro shot off because of reliability is more important than a patriotic purchase. It would a been to me.

What body style is it?

Typically the four door ('Double Cab') come from the Baja plant, that is the only model made there. They are adding a third shift now as demand is so high! The long awaited THIRD generation Tacoma will be the 2016 model, we should see in July, 2015. The current SECOND generation Tacoma began as a 2005 model!

Tacomas are available in 3 cab sizes (Regular, Access, Double), 2 bed lengths (5 ft., 6 ft.), 2WD or 4WD, and various trim or feature packages (SR-5, OFF ROAD TRD, SPORT TRD, PRO, T/X BAJA, etc.).

sd - 12-12-2014 at 09:31 AM

Hi David,

I have the regular cab 4WD 2 door. I now call it my Home Depot truck, after reading this thread.

bajalearner - 12-12-2014 at 11:23 AM

I don't let a photo of a military or police vehicle brand tell me it's necessarily the best option.

I have no dog in this fight either but I was in the Army for (only) 6 years back when Chrysler was failing and the military was using dodge products that were junk in my mind. Then I went to work for the CA state government in the mid 80's and found they also had been buying Chrysler products too. I submit that government agencies were buying Chryslers to aid the company in regaining their health starting from the feds which trickle down to the states by the threat of loosing $$$ if the states don't comply. Especially when the Fed's bail out a company.

That said, I think the military buys equipment for a number of political reasons, not just that the particular vehicle is the best available. Maybe a smart Congressman has a particular vender in his district.

Years ago, San Diego lifeguards where driving Nissan 4wd pickups on the beach and I heard the trucks were donated by Nissan. Great advertisement if the rumor was true.

I like my 4 WD Toyota Sequoia for the paved road, light duty service I need. I've had it 9.5 years, 115,000 miles.

rts551 - 12-12-2014 at 08:23 PM

Driving down the highway in baja 600 miles... saw lots of cows on the hiway. a few goats... one sheep. I now know that mexicans prefer riding cows...a few keep goats for emergencies....no one rides a sheep ( i AM NOT GOING THERE). Only A$$ is in SOCAL.
